What's your Sole do for you?

I've been trying to figure this one for a while. I was at the gas station buying some fix a flat... my wife tends to wait till after everything is closed to tell me there is a problem with her car. Like last week for example. I got the camper all ready to go and packed up... she says oh, the car needs brakes...

Anyways, there was the last months of Golf Digest burning up on the dashboard... that she "forgot" to give me.

There was a little article about sole width, and how wider soles launch the ball higher than their thinner counterparts. This makes sense to me, my RocketBladez, most of the tour players had them ground down to nothing by the time they were hittable. And the i200 launches rather high with its mid/thick sole.

TSauer and his "want to hit the KING CB" reminded me how much lower and a more piercing flight I got with those, and now that I'm thinking about it, my Titleist 990B's were thin soles and flew super low.

What's your thoughts on this?

Has any testing of this sort been done in the lab?

I don't know of any Spy testing but I'll back this from my experiences.

That's the basic concept for GI and SGI irons right? Same goes for hybrid irons. A wider sole is easier to hit and lifts the ball for you.

I don't know the technical jargon but it's somewhere along the lines that the wider sole provides more weight through the bottom of the ball at impact and more stability for the trampoline effect. Think heavy foot vs light foot kicking a soccer ball. From a GI perspective it also acts as a guide for your swing

It's not just the width of the sole, but the bounce and camber.

Pings are usually very high bounce relative to other clubs.

Srixon's have wide sole, but they use a V sole with positive bounce near the leading edge and then negative bounce on the 2nd part of the sole. Thus they are initially high bounce, but then transition to negative bounce to produce a unique turf interaction

I found it interesting that Titleist does not list the 716 AP2 Bounces on their website - here is why:

We made the decision not to include the bounce angle because the modern sole design is so much more than just the bounce angle.  Given that sole width, camber, grind, bounce as well as CG will all have an impact on how your irons move through the turf.it was no longer as relevant to list just the bounce.

Not sure if this is my problem with the long i200 irons, my TM's are:

3 - 0°

4 - 1°

5 - 1.5°

6 - 3.5°

7 - 4°

8 - 6.5°

9 - 7.5°

P - 9°

Like I've mentioned long irons are one of the things I've relied on, and I can't get the i200's to work for me.

Gawd I love the sole on my Cleveland S wedge.  It's almost like cheating out of the sand and I've saved a ton of shots around the greens where I have to hit high soft shots. Just open up the face and use that big ole butt and let er slide under the ball.   That puppy floats up in the air and lands like a butterfly with sore feet. ;)
