Getting new irons this Saturday

Zylem

Recommended Posts

Well all, I'm sure everyone here will be happy to hear, this Saturday I am scheduled to get a fitting for some new irons. I have been demoing sets for a while now and I am going to pull the trigger.

I was planning on waiting for the new Titlest to come out this November to try them too but two things happened. First, my PW and 7 iron got run over by a golf cart. Second, I got bit hard by the GAS bug. (Gear aquire syndrome)

I really wish there was a better story about my clubs. All that happened was they were leaning against the cart on the range and my buddy took the cart to get some beer from the snack shack. Honest mistake, he felt horrible, probably because we where playing partners in a two man scramble. Lol

I am hoping to get some input from you all on sets to try out. I've made a short list of what I would like to hit and compare against, but I want to make sure I don't miss any.

I am a 6 index right now but I think that will be climbing up a little to 6.5 or 7 soon. I have posted a few higher scores this season due to some shoddy play around the greens. I'd like to blame it on the crazy wet conditions but we all know it's the crazy guy's swinging the club fault. Currently I am/was playing Titlest 710 AP2 with project x 6.0 shafts and am looking for something a little more forgiving.

Below is the list.

1. Mizuno JPX forged/tour

2. Callaway Steelhead

3. PING G400

4. Srixon Z545

I read through the newest blog post about GI irons and was happy to see some of these on the list. I really could not come at a better time. So I feel confident in any of these. I'll definitely let you all know how the process went and what I ended up with.

Thursday night I'll have to post in the played today thread for you all. I am sure it will be a great story as my two options for clubs. Played the Titlest with two main clubs missing or bring the old Mizuno MP33s out of retirement. I haven't hit those since college.

Thanks in advance for all the advice. I am looking forward to posting all the results for you all very soon.

Definitely, is there anything you all would like me to gather and post here? I was thinking of getting pictures of my results and maybe doing a mini write up of my feelings of each set.

That or I was thinking of trying to write a summary of the whole experience since I noticed there are a few members that have not yet had a fitting. Maybe if I get enough free time I'll do both. With all this rain I'm have been getting who knows when I'll get to play a a full round again.

just for one ... and if they have them ... you should try the one length/single length clubs.  Cobra/Wishon/Edel are the major players right now;  try the PW and 5i and you'll get a good idea of what it's like.  Who knows, you may like em!

I don't think you could go wrong with any one of those irons that you listed. It seems manufacturers are all stepping up their game and all make strong performing sets.

I would say pay attention to which clubs, like the Steelheads, that have hotter faces then say the Mizunos. Hot faces, Cupped faces, etc., seem to be some of the buzz words around iron construction these days.

But have fun and Let's see those new sticks when you get them!

Does anyone know the average time it takes to get your irons after you have been fitted and they have been ordered?

Me, Jlukes, CG2, and Severtheties have all been anxiously waiting our Mizunos for testing. It was the hardest 2 weeks of our lives, and I'm sure the mods in the PM thread are totally annoyed by how giddy we are.

I think it depends on what shaft you're fit for, and the availability. Also, if they have to bend lofts/lies to adjust, that might add on to the build time as well.

As others have said. You can't go wrong with anything on that ,list.

At a 7 cap you could easily play the z765 as well as the JPX 900 Forged.

The G400 during a recent demo went nothing but high, long and straight. If you're into those kinda things

I for one always enjoy reading about people's whole fitting experience. We are all so different we look for and notice different things. So it's good to hear a lot of different thoughts.

Have fun and congrats.

Thank you and thanks to everyone else. I did a fitting last year for my driver but this will be my first for irons since 2010. So I am sure a lot has changed. I cannot wait to get in there and start swinging the new equipment.

Are the z765 comparable to the JPX 900? I honestly know nothing about Srixon. I am just trying to go in there with as little brand loyalty as I can, and be like an open book.

765s will be closer to the 900 tours. 565s will be most similar to the 900 forged

Below is the list.

1. Mizuno JPX forged/tour

2. Callaway Steelhead

3. PING G400

4. Srixon Z545

These are all fantastic clubs! That being said, what sort of club are you interested in? There're some pretty big differences in those and some models you don't have listed that might be a good fit.

Tostart, the Mizuno JPX Forged is a pretty legit players iron. My dad has them and I would consider them more of a players iron than the Ping i200 (which I am currently testing, read official reviews in the appropriate forum!). In turn, the i200 is more of a players iron than the G400 which you have listed.

Next, the Callaway steel head is another GI iron. If you're looking for more of a players iron, give their Apex irons a swing while you're at it. I played the Apex 16 and thought they were pretty nice and not a "challenging" iron to hit consistently.

As for the Srixons, haven't played em, no comment! I would definitely be wary of the JPX900 tours. The forged version is a serious club (I think it has been marketed too much as a GI iron for some reason). The club head is much smaller than the i200s, and while a cavity back, it is forged!

Best of luck and at the end of the day, buy what makes you happy!

Looking for something a little more forgiving than the current AP2s. I am not scared of player irons. Ball striking has always been the best part of my game. That being said I am interested in what GI irons have to offer. Most of the courses I play don't require much shot shaping so I don't mind giving some playability if I can save a shot or two from off center hits.

I have never hit cast irons so I honestly do not know how I would like the feel. I tried to include a set of them in my list to see if I like the feel.

If you are looking for something a bit more forgiving then the AP2s, then the Srixon 565 (or 545s if you go with the previous version) is going to be hard to beat when it comes to looks, feel and performance.

I am going to the PGA superstore. I really like the guy that fitted me for my driver and he is working tomorrow. It's an indoor fitting and I understand the pros and cons but being in Florida I wanted to be out of the heat because I maybe there for a few hours.

FWIW ... Club Champion (one of the more highly rated club fitters) do their fittings indoors.  I asked the guy why and he said they don't want any wind or other factors (sweaty grips from FL humidity(!)) to play a factor in the fitting.  Made sense to me and they guarantee things so that if anything is wrong when you take it outdoors they will fix it.

Good luck and have fun.  I loved being fit for my irons this year.  So much fun to hit different clubs and see the results...and feels so so good when you get dialed in with a set!

Thanks, I am getting really excited. I am trying not to research anymore clubs so I can be as unbiased as possible. I just didn't want to be overwhelmed when they ask what clubs I want to try. At the same time I wanted to feel like I tried everything lol.
