ehilburn11
Going to buy a new putter in the next week and wanting to see what you guys think I should try. I have been looking at the Spider Tour Red and Scotty Cameron m1. I have a straight back putting stoke so I'm thinking I'm wanting a face balanced, wanting something consistent and good for lag putts. Let me hear your suggestions and comments! Spur22
Love my Tour Red but one thing to consider is it is slight toe hang so it wants to arc a bit. Spur22
That's a tough one to answer as I've only got 5 or 6 rounds on the Tour Red and that's on fast greens and the feeling off the face is soooo different. My best advice is to get somewhere and try them both out and see which one suits you better. BIG STU
Ok here I go out of the box of convential thinking again as usual. I am not going to reccomend a paticular brand or style. I will say go with what ever fits your eye and style and the main thing that feels comfortable to you. I know some of the young guys in the Pro Shop have went to the new TM Spider putters and like them. One of them went from a new style of the Classic 8802 and loves the Red Spider. He was a pretty good putter with the 8802 though. It is what ever fits your eye. Ended up with a Odyssey #9... the #9 'style' is fantastic! Great putter in-between the mallet and true blade putter. If you have a chance give one a go and see what you think. I have a natural gate/arc stroke and always played with an 8802 style putter after starting with an 8802 that I still own. Currently playing a Bobby Grace 6330 that was stolen and I finally found another used and bought it immediately. But I was intrigued by the Spider Black Tour as it accommodated a gate stroke and was automatic on the fast and flat greens of the PGA SS. However, actually playing one on the course was a different story. Short straight putts were ideal but even short breaking puts just lack a feel the 6330 gives me. Even though every putt is a straight putt, breaking putts take a finesse especially when dealing with slopes. The Spider seems like a good fit for a mechanical stroke but is just too unwieldy to finesse, at least for me. As you said Stu, a heel shafted blade putter just fits my eye much better. I have tried to play several putters that had a great balance, looked good to my eye and produced an excellent roll. But if they are too hard or overly soft feeling it is easy to lose confidence with them or maybe worse, start thinking about the insert/face feel instead of thinking about the putt. Come up a little short or fly by the hole? Putters fault with that hard face because it just didn't feel right. Driver: Qi10 10.5* ... Ventus Red Velocore 5R Fairway: Qi10 5 wood ... Come up a little short or fly by the hole? Putters fault with that hard face because it just didn't feel right. Well I have said this many times it is when and what equipment was available when one was learning the game. For me it was Balata balls and either a mallet putter , 8802 style blade or a Bulls Eye style blade. I mean there was variations of all of them at the time especially the 8802 style which really was developed from the Macgregor Ironmasters of the 40s and 50s. But basically the 3 basic putter types. Then you got the Ping Anser and you younger guys do not laugh it was "high tech" at the time. My Old Man who was a mallet man said the Anser was the ugliest POS he ever saw and that it would never sell. How wrong he was. On feel I have been blessed or cursed with an very sensitive feel and it just is not in golf either. I can be driving a vehicle and can tell where on a car a tire is going down some. I can tell the position. On a truck I can tell too especially a tractor but I can say what axle it is usually but not the exact tire because there are 8 back there. I learned a lot in my racing days. I had my basic set up that I knew and had a couple of guys help me over the years including my wife and late son. I would come in after practice and did not know the pressure but would like say put 2 lbs of air in the right rear because it is going through the turns like a bucket of $hit. I felt what my car was doing through my hands. Another friend of mine who won 4 4 cylinder national races felt the car literally through the seat of his pants. He ran absolutely no padding or cover in his aluminum racing seat. Golf clubs and I have proved this many times I can feel by swinging and hitting 4 or 5 balls if it is slugged in the hosel or tip weighted as they say now. BTW I absolutely can not stand a club that is tip weighted in the shaft. Even though I have a Swing Weight machine I do not SW any of my personal clubs.I can guess pretty close though but I do not care one iota on those things on my stuff.
