Need a new driver

Recommended Posts

So I have started using a Skycaddie Linx GT watch with smart tags on the course. Yesterday it rained pretty good right before I played so the course was soggy. I found out that with my Nike Ignite 460 I am only getting about 225-235 carry distance. I have measured distances of 245-275 other rounds using GPS and am thinking that due to the wet conditions I got zero roll out which could be the reason the distances are short. Even with my 2 iron hybrid I am only getting 210-217 distance. I guess I am going to need to get a fitting to optimize the carry distance. Now granted it didn't hurt me that much cause I shot a 79. My swing speed is 99 mph most of the time as measured by trackman during a driver fitting earlier this year. At that fitting, the pro didn't even ask me to hit my driver for reference which was weird and ended up suggesting a Titleist 917D2 9.5 with Aldila Rogue Stiff shaft. I didn't buy it because well its $500.

"Obviously my iron play is incredible, and when I get going I can get hot, but this course just fits my eye. The shaping of the holes, and just a couple of the doglegs, I'm able to shape shots."

Haha no problem.  Yeah it can be eye opening to see how much the difference between carry and roll out distances are.  Carry is king, so I would always get fit for carry as carry rules most conditions - especially up in the north/south east where courses are softer

I know when I got fitted for the Titleist 917D2 we got my spin numbers to 2200-2400 with range balls so maybe that is the right club for me.

Also this might sound a bit crazy but I think the Golf Club 2 is helping me on the course. My tempo was really great yesterday.

Those numbers are pretty much spot on to what I get in my rounds. I'm between 105 and 110 and depending where I hit the ball off the driver, those are the typical numbers I'm seeing. Crazy how much spin affects your carry distance. Like JLukes said, I'd take better carry numbers over roll, unless you can magically roll the ball across lakes and ravines :)

... Eye opening indeed. People talk about swing speed being exaggerated but driver carry is by far a more exaggerated or just misunderstood distance. Just take a rangefinder and look at that bunker you avoid or lay up short of and many would be surprised by the carry distance. My son carries a series of bunkers I use a 3 iron and hit right at as I know I will come up short. I have tried to carry it downwind and although I never felt like I absolutely centered one with my best swing, I just hit the lip and didn't carry it missing it by about a yard. Now I routinely hit the ball 260-270 and occasionally get it out there 280-290 but that bunker is 245 to carry although the high lip makes it a little farther. And under calm conditions I have little to no chance at all. Right there with you "carry is king".

Yep it's always a shocker when you play in wet conditions and instead of 8 iron into a green your hitting 5 iron!
