I'm a former...way former softball player myself Josh so I know how it is looking for something to fill that void. Rough lie by the tree trunk, I think I would invoke "new club rule" there and not even attempt to hit it...ha

Oh yeah, I took a free drop, and gave my buddy one free pass!

Caught up on all the reviews to date. Great job guys.

I really enjoy reading the individual comments of different players with different games and things that are important to them.

It's much better than just reading one person's account who may or may not have similar ability or likes in a club.

Thanks to MGS for providing this and all the OEM'S for making the clubs available.

My apologies for being late on getting stage 2 up. It was fun to read what both Camcmart and Josmi15 wrote. I see a lot of comparables across our 3 reviews.

Camcmart and Josmi15 you guys did a great job, I hope you had as much fun doing your reviews as I did..

This has been a great experience.. I hope everyone enjoys the reviews..

Finally catching up on these reviews. Great Stage 2s so far guys. Here's some questions I had:

@Josmi

Have the trackman numbers translated to numbers you can count on at the course now that you've gotten some rounds under your belt or are you finding variances?

@Cam

Have you tried hitting different shot shapes? (ie high low draw punch) I'm just curious if you've got new shots in your bag that you didn't have before.

@Reese

Are you having an easier or tougher time hitting the ball squarely consistently? Forgiveness is great and all, but the goal should still be square hits as often as possible.

Easier absolutely. Consistently square as well as centered on hits...

I had to try to hit off center.. Mind you It was easier to mis hit the longer irons, but I think most of using GI irons have that problem. With the Pitching and Gap wedges i noticed that i was hitting center and squarely a lot of the times. Some of that might be being able to "feel" the head, The Wilson D300's have a lighter shaft than the Ping's I think this allows me to have a better feel for where the heads is located and try to make adjustments accordingly. And even on the longer clubs i was center more often (or at least they felt centered) than not..

The only other shot I've been able to successfully execute consistently is a nice punch shot that I couldn't previously.

What are the flexes of shafts the reviewers were sent, regular, stiff, etc. ?

I have a driver swing speed of about 90 mph so I elected for regular flex steel shafts; KBS Tour 80-gram shafts were stock. The shaft is designed to compensate for the stronger lofts to aid in a higher launch/trajectory.

I opted for the Stiff flex in the KBS Tour 80 grm weight.   as I have a driver speed of 108-110.. I am more than happy with the flex compared to my Ping's. Like i stated before the only real issue I have a i have a slight fade with the Wilson D 300's that i have never had before with irons.. But nothing that is overly concerning, I don't think. just something I have to adjust for.. but very predictable..

Stage Three - The Follow Up & Value Question.

The Five Questions

1.    Will this product go in your bag? Why or why not? YES! It already has, as I showed in Stage 1 and 2 pictures, the D300 clubs shape and size are almost the same as my Ping g25's, making the transition fairly easy. The Wilson D300's are long, straight, and very forgiving without giving up the height and feel I prefer. I'm not sure I will give up my Pings but I am playing the Wilson's and plan to until I “Need” new clubs..

2.    To whom, if anyone, would you recommend this product? Why? Anyone that might be looking for new clubs. Especially the mid-to High handicapper looking for more distance and consistency. These clubs are a pleasure to play. They take no effort at all to get the ball moving in the right direction with a great ball flight.

3.    How, if at all, did this product change your overall impression of [brand]? I thought this product did a great job moving Wilson back into the main stream of pro quality clubs. I used to think of Wilson as old and tired, Not any more these clubs are every bit as good as my Pings and my buddies new Taylor Made's. They both Look and play great. I have not hit any other of Wilson's latest clubs but I am sure if these are any indication, they are great.

4.    What feature would you change or eliminate from the next generation of this model? I think some people might be put off by the power slots. This might be an area that gets looked at, not to eliminate but maybe down play. Maybe eliminate the actual slots on the top-line for a cleaner more traditional look. That is my only thought. Other than that these clubs look and feel amazing.

5.    What feature do you really like, and would most like to see continued or evolved in future models? I really like the chrome finish. I think this does give it a very traditional look, something distinguished. I think the chrome finish and metal fill the power slots on the top-line, these clubs would fly off the rack more than they do now. Not eliminate the power slots just cover the elastomer with the metal so that they create a highly “finished” look. It would create a very beautiful traditional looking golf club. A little less “rock star” and a little more “classic” look. Just my $.02. To me after a few round I don't even notice them while playing. But I did notice how some people might.

Again I would like to Thank My Golf Spy and Wilson for the opportunity test and review the Wilson D300 Irons.

Feel free to ask any questions.. thanks

Dave

Dave I totally enjoyed your work/reviews on these irons.  Now you got me interested in some Wilson irons which I have not gamed in a coons age! ;)

Thank You Gray. I Hope I did you and all the other Spy's proud. I was as objective as I felt i could be..

By all means go hit the Wilson clubs, as i suspect you  would rather play the best clubs you can get no matter what brand.. I would highly recommend at least trying these clubs, they are great and they also are beautiful..

Major congrats to you and your new love, "Betty" also..  :D

Stage Three - The Follow Up & Value Question.

1) Will this product go in your bag?

I've grown fond of these clubs. They performed in every situation that I have put it through. They will definitely help out a mid to high handicapper with the forgiveness that these clubs afford. With that being said, and after much deliberation, I'm sad to say these won't stay in my bag. The only reason as to why they won't, is that my current Irons are fitted for me. That being said, if these clubs would have been fitted for my swing. No doubt in my mind, these clubs would stay in my bag.

Great reviews. It's been a fun journey watching your work.

How come you didn't order these to the specs you got at your fitting from last year? To me, that's one of the most important things you can do. Even still, having them adjusted to your specs would cost less than $100 if you truly wanted to put the Wilsons in your bag.

  • 1 month later...

Had any of you guys played the C200 previously? Just curious how these compared. I had the C200 for about 6 months last year. Really kind of miss them.

The only experience I've had with the C200s was demoing the 7i at my local golf shop, which is what intrigued me about the D300s. Loved the feel of the C200s along with the forgiveness, and the D300s didn't disappoint, especially with distance

From what I recall they're about even, with the D300 being maybe just a hair wider, though nothing noticeable. Both are definitely great sets of GI irons with great feel off the face
