Flipper554
The course I play is like that, very little sand and very compacted under that. After much experimenting, what I came up with is using my 60* slighty open taking only a sliver of sand. Too much bounce on the sand wedge, just keep blading them. Give it a try, hope it works for you. Kenny B
FYI, I was in Phoenix a couple of years ago and playing a very nice course. On one par 4 with four bunkers around the green, the course was taking out two of the bunkers. I was told that each bunker cost $7500 a year to maintain; most likely grounds keepers time for the most part, but the sand was excellent. I can understand why courses don't maintain their bunkers very well. $$$$$ “We don’t stop playing the game because we get old; we get old because we stop playing the game.”
revkev
I have SCORS - tight lies are easy. Seriously - first look to see if the lip is low enough to putt or chip. If not take your medicine. Use your wedge with the least amount of bounce. Shut the face and play and explosion shot. Then don't hit it there again. Kenny B
Damn... that's expensive... I usually just see the greenkeepers drive in with their machine and make it all fluffy in 5mins (per bunker). My course is a muni and they do an OK job with the bunkers. Sand has to be replaced at least once a year; twice would be better in some of the bunkers. The wind blows a lot of sand out during the year. #18 is a par 5 with a 12 yard wide bunker that runs along the right side of the fairway after the dogleg all the way to the front and both sides of the green from 170 out. That's a lot of sand. “We don’t stop playing the game because we get old; we get old because we stop playing the game.”
The Bogey Master
I feel you, my home course has the same issue. The bunkers play like clay 24/7. However I've come up with a "strategy" that works so well I've actually enjoy playing out of these bunkers. I use my 60 degree wedge with very little bounce, open up the face all the way, then set up with my hands way in front of the ball. I try to swing with a steep attack angle, dig into the "sand," and push my hands through so the leading edge digs more then it would on a regular bunker shot. This works really well for me and like I said, I don't have a problem with these bunkers anymore. The resulting shot is high, lands soft, and stops after 1 bounce. I'm really not sure how it turns out so well for me but I'd defiantly give it a shot. Sent from my iPhone using MyGolfSpy

Trimming another day, for a total of 1 hour per bunker, per week. 52 times $15 (10 per hour plus taxes etc) equals $780. Add about $100 for topping off sand and you get less than $1,000 per bunker, per year. I bet he didn't give the GM $15,000 off his budget! Zylem
As others have said, I try to pick it clean. Remember the first goal of a bunker shot is get out of the bunker. With a hard pan lie sometimes you have to just get it out and not worry about where the hole is. A 40 foot putt is better than a second shot in the bad bunker.
