To Do Tips After Posting Consecutive Bad Scores

Recommended Posts

I am scratching my head right now trying to figure what has changed in my game/swing as of late. I have not been able to play as much as I normally do and my game is suffering. My last 8 scores have all been in the upper 80's to lower 90's.

Right now it seems that every round something different is off. Normally I can tell where I lost strokes during the round and work on that. But this has been something different. I almost feel like I am losing focus and going on tilt after four or five holes. Which is weird for me since I really try to not take things too serious and just enjoy being outside playing a great game with friends. It even more frustrating because the last few round I have started swing over the top which is something I battled all through high school but hasn't been a problem in almost ten years now. In fact it's been so long that I cannot remember the drill I was given that helped cure it. I know it had something to do with my right shoulder. (I am a right handed player.)

Anyhow I was wondering what do you all do when when you scores start to trend into unwanted territory?

I know what you're talking about. I get little glitches in my swing and it takes me a couple of jumbo buckets to figure it out. You said you're coming over the top. Maybe focus on swinging your hips through first?

Yeah I think it's that or my posture may of gotten sloppy. I am going to keep an eye on it tomorrow and see what happens.

First off. I misread the title at first, I thought it read, To Do The Tips After Two Bad Rounfs...ha

I thought, well that's one approach.

But to answer your question. I'll try and get out on the range and.mainly work on my tempo. And also make sure I'm not rushing into my downswing before finishing the backswing. That's where things get ugly looking for me.

Generally when I get into a funk like that it is the result of bad tempo.  I just focus on maintaining a good tempo with all my clubs.

When I go from playing well to not knowing where the ball will go, I go to the range and check my grip, alignment, and setup to the ball. Then I get out my 7 iron, tee up a range ball about 1/2", and take a full swing, very slow and methodical, trying to hit the balls 40-50 yards. This allows me to really feel the entire swing, noting any part that might be out of sync. As soon as the 40-50 yard balls start flying straight, I speed up the swing trying to go 10 yards further. I continue to increase the swing speed until I get to my regular speed. I can usually work out any kinks in about 15-20 balls.

Thanks for the tips. I played this morning and really made some progress. Almost back to my old self. I kept two swing thoughts through out my round. One was start with the correct posture and then keep a smooth rythmn.

Still had a few shots where I was swinging over the top, but I think I know the cause and will work on that next time. I believe it has to do with my hips not turning enough during my backswing. I want to get my tempo back first before I tackle anything else.

^^^ Oh, yeah!!! ^^^

But for a different "remedy" .. (and at the extreme risk of heresy and sacrilege) maybe even take a few days off from hitting balls, go out and enjoy some other recreation...?

If I posted eight straight bad scores I would take a lesson.

I went from a high score of 80 in May (10 rounds posted and most mid 70's) to a low score of 82 in June (10-ish rounds posted and most mid 80's)

My only thoughts were that I'm happy to be playing golf and something is wrong with my setup and I'll figure it out eventually.  It was a very painful month, but I did figure it out (it was a setup/grip issue) and have been playing better since.

There's no one fix for everyone.  Some guys need to go blast balls at the range until they figure it out.  Some need a week or two off.  Everyone is different, but for me I just figure that golf is kind of cyclical.  You play well for a while and then it falls apart for a while.  As long as you have fun and keep playing it will come back around.

  • 7 months later...

Thought I would resurrect this thread since I seem to be going through a tough time with my game right now and maybe a few of you are as well.

Normally my short game is the best part of my golf game but as of late it seems to be the weak link. I am blazing putts 6 to 10 feet past the hole and blading wedges left and right. I think something has happened with my tempo and I am rushing these shots causing me to get too quick a tempo.

I may be just over thinking everything and need to step back and just let my game naturally correct itself. But man is it frustrating to see those high numbers add up.

You should just move to Canada. You will have 6 months every year to step away and rethink/second guess your game. And then you can come out at the start of the season and hope that you still remember how to hit a golf club. And just when you get everything exactly where it needs to be, Its time to pack it up again and forget everything all over again.

But the good thing is we dont have any exotic bugs.

Happens to the best and worse of us. The key for me, no matter how painful, is to keep on playing. The range does nothing for me, as I usually stripe it on the range and lose it on the course. Actual play, and a lot of it, is the key for me to break through the barrier. Not dwelling on it also helps. This may not work for you but it helps me.

1) play

2) play

3) play

Professional baseball players don't stop batting if in a slump. If anything they hit bp more and keep playing

I'm a baseball player. (Or was...) You may have baseball confused with basketball. You know, “shooters shoot” and all that. Baseball players find a “slump buster”. Just sayin'...

So to update those that may be curious, I purchased an orange whip on Wednesday and decided to take the weekend off. I have been using the whip in my back yard just to get a few swings in here and there through the day. Maybe taking a few days off from the course and getting some work with the whip will help with my tempo.

"One whiskey, one scotch, one beer."

But seriously - take a week or so off, watch golf on TV (it always motivates me), and forget about those bad rounds (negative thoughts never help). ... And if all else fails, follow the George Thorogood method.

Since I love whisk(e)y of all kinds, I endorse this advice...lol.

Well since I am currently fighting off the flu right now, I haven't had much desire to do anything. On the bright side this counts as taking a little time off I guess.
