Proper counting of OB shots.

Just need to check my understanding...

 

1. If I hit a tee shot OB, then re-tee and hit .. I'm lying 3?

And,

2. If I hit a fairway shot and drop (in the same spot) .. I add +2?

Yes, if you're 2nd is OB (or lost) you will be playing your 4th with next shot

Stroke and distance penalty.

Any time you hit it out of bounds, you count the shot that you hit, count a penalty stroke, then reload and count the next shot. So it's always 1 out, 2 back in, hitting 3. Or 2nd shot OB, 3rd back in, hitting 4. Etc etc

It isn't that you simply add 2.   You count the stroke you hit,  count a penalty stroke, and then hit your next shot from the same spot you previously hit from.  

In scenario 1.  Tee shot is 1,  penalty is 2,  next shot is 3

In scenario 2.  Assuming the original shot was your second, the shot would be 3, then you are hitting 4 from your same spot.

Funny story (sort of!).. hit a not so great tee shot on a Par 5, dogleg right; topped it and it ended up on the right edge of the fairway and short of the dogleg and blocked by a tree. Took out the hybrid .. pretty wide fairway so there was room on the "outside" of the dogleg but instead of a slight fade I hit a high strong slice. Ugh. Ball is GONE into the woods. Drop one (in the same spot) and try again. Well instead of an easy swing out into the fairway .. wouldn't you know it .. and I do the EXACT SAME thing again!!! I mean, the two balls appeared to travel the exact same path and trajectory! So drop again and this time, ok, whew, my third [attempt at a..] second shot works out. But then of course I duff the short chip and have to chip again from the new bad lie. Anyway, so on in 8 after the two penalties and ended with a 10........

(Can you say, "round wrecker"?)

You and me brother!!  We all have them.  Yours are just bigger than mine, although every once in awhile...      If I eliminated my double bogeys this weekend, I would have been in the 70's both days.

In your scenarios, I look at them like this

Anytime you drop or re-tee a ball, it counts as a shot,

 

So driver 1, hybrid 2, drop 3, hybrid is 4, drop is 5, Out is 6, diff is 7, Chip on is 8, then add your putts

Makes sense, and easy way to count.

 

Initially was not totally clear on "stroke and distance" .. now I see it's that PLUS add a penalty stroke.
