In my opinion, Putting is the hardest part of golf and the most over looked for time practicing.

What do you think?

SO I`m a fantastic ball striker I have shot 75 (SS70) with 40 putts early on in the season.

I usually hit 14 greens per round average and I simply do not hole enough birdie putts,

Now, whats a birdie putt ???

when you have had eight putts under 16ft for birdie then a true putter should bang at least 4 of them?? shouldn't they??

AM I too hard on myself?

I really do need to see a proper putting coach in the off season and get this putting game mastered.

Personally I find driving the most difficult part.

Once I do arrive at the course and park, it's all difficult.

Not sure the exact number, but 25% make on 16' foot putts would be pretty darn close to tour level putting

When you hit a lot of greens in reg you are going two putt more often. I shot 72 +1 hit 15 greens 35 putts. A while ago shot 72 hit 9 greens 28 putts. Putted pretty much the same both rounds, just proximity to hole was the difference.

I don't want to agree.

I want to hole 40 percent of 15 ft putts.

I want to hole 50 percent of 10 ft putts

And 9 out of 10.. 6 ft and in putts.

This winter which is starting now things are going to change.

I'm going to see a putting coach and learn how to roll the ball true i draw a line on the ball and after I putt the ball the line often wobbles.

This needs to stop I need a pure roll for better distance control.

I'm not a bad putter overall I just won't settle for OK.

Wish me luck

I like putting. The weakest part of my game is approach shots so I need decent putting to overcome this. When I get to the course B4 play I go directly to putting green and see what they are like.

I was watching the PGA event earlier and Jon Rahm was 9 of 9 putting from 10-15' for the week. I'd guess that is better than the average tour level guy. Also read the blog post regarding the accros CEO. He thought his putting was bad but it turned out he wasn't getting close to the hole. Check it out and it may not be as bad as you think.

I wish you luck.  There are several sources for PGA level putting; here are some numbers I found:

  • From 3 feet: 95%
  • From 6 feet: 65%
  • 7ft 10in: 50%
  • From 9 feet: 43%
  • From 12 feet: 30%
  • From 15 feet: 22%

Putting is harder than people want to believe and depending on your game it could be related to proximity to the hole or putting itself.

I think it's probably the hardest part because it's the least focused on part of the game, imo. Most people want to be able to drive the ball super far or stripe their irons shots, that they don't practice putting as much as they do everything else. I've been putting A LOT of work into putting and I'm finally getting more confident on the green than I ever have before.

I'm going to agree with excourse and say driving is the hardest part, at least for me. If I could drive as well as I putt, I'd be ecstatic.

I finally relented. After suffering very nervous putting for a year or so I finally stumped up the cash and had a putting lesson.....best $80 I spent for a long time. The local pro quickly identified a very weak grip style. We spent 10ish minutes trying to find a stronger set up that didn't feel too foreign to me and then half hour of drills and technique, and what do you know from previous round of 5-3 putts with 3 of them coming from inside 5 metres to NO three putts with 6-8 putts from outside 6 metres and even made all 6 putts from 5 ft or less ( A miracle for me)! I even had an eagle putt from 20ish metres which I left 5ft above the hole and got the birdie!

Those PGA putting stats are interesting.
I would expect the. Numbers to be a lot higher if they putted on the same greens each week.
And that is why I expect more from myself.
Perhaps I might be ambitious with the numbers I require to achieve but everybody loves a hard worker.

Putting can be very hard. I am a streaky putter but usually solid for a weekend warrior. I am sure if I put the time in I would be vastly better. Personally I find it is chipping that leaves me in a cold sweat!!

I can agree about it being the most over looked part when practicing. I am guilty of this, Everytime time I say I am going to spend an hour on the practice green. But I get out there start going through my routine and what feels like an hour is only twenty minutes.... I shrug it off and start to work on my chipping game.

As for it being the hardest part of golf, I don't know. I always felt like the approach in to the green is the hardest part. It seems like the greatest players have the ability to get it close from anywhere. Be it in regulation for a birdie attempt or up and down for a par save. Which, in turn, makes it looks like they are amazing putters.

This part of practice is what I am very guilty of skipping. I will knock 7irons all day to my maximum distance on the range but I never practice taking a few yards off. Being able to shave off 3 yards could turn a twenty foot putt into an eleven foot putt.

I've begun practising trying to take 3-5 yards off my irons. Has helped quite a bit!

Good luck with the practicing. That was just something I noticed. The last few great scores I had I thought I was putting great. It wasn't until my playing partners commented on how many putts I had inside ten feet that I really started to notice that correlation.

I think it was Hogan's wife that said if he wanted to make more putts, hit your approach closer to the hole

I think the pros know each green like a someone that putts on the same green each week.  they have detailed books with all the slopes and contours of the green and each week the greens play at roughly the same speed.  Like you,  I think people think they are much better putters than they are because they show the leaders who are making the putts and just like us, they get on hot streaks.

Keep working and it could be possible to achieve your goal.

I'm with you on putting for sure. I didn't play poorly yesterday, I just couldn't make a single putt all day. Believe it or not, but I only made 3 putts over 3 feet. I still turned in an 80 on a hard course, but could have been so much lower. A little disappointing...

So I thought another Putter may give the Bettianardi Queen B9 some competition.

There is going to be lots of winter seasons practice.

Let's see which stays in the bag for next seasons competition golf

I agree putting is not easy. Most people also take the complicated route to solve the problem. My approach is simple I stopped focusing on long putts and only focus on 6 foot in. I cut my handicap in half twice from 4 to 2 and now 1 since I take this route.

True that many high handicappers don't take enough break I think that many mid and low handicappers playing too much break on their putts. I stopped all of the over reading and playing too much break and just play a few inches from the holes unless it's obvious. The combination of my short putts confidence and simple approach to green reading my putting improved.

I'm getting one of these http://www.birdieball.com/double-depth-putting-green/ for the 7 months of winter. I "should" be able to make a putt if I spend a hour a day working on technique yeah?

Sent from my iPhone using MyGolfSpy

The GF got one this past winter and I used it a bit. Had a bad habit of pulling the club towards me, but still being square so was just always hitting off the toe. It helped my technique a lot! Wouldn't use it to practice speed or anything like that
