Putting is the hardest part of golf

Most of this has been said already but I have some time so...  :P

Context matters. If you look at the numbers for made putts by PGA Tour pros, it seems like they don't make a high percentage of long putts. That's true but, they don't miss long putts by much either and they make virtually all of their short putts.

Also, yes, they are way better at putting than you or I. They practice putting more often and with greater focus than you or I do in a month. Also, when looking at that data, remember; they are putting under more pressure than you will ever know, they get zero gimmies and the greens they're putting are a really, really fast! If you go watch them on a putting green practicing, they would be dropping bombs like an allied B-17 over Dresden circa 1945.

Second, they hit better approach shots. Like Hogan's wife apparently said, hit it closer if you want to make more putts. All the putting practice in the world doesn't matter if you've already used up all your strokes getting on the green!

Read the recent interview with Sal Syed who developed the Arccos virtual caddie. He used analytics to figure out how to best improve his game. Originally, he too thought putting was holding him back. Turns out, he putted ok, his approach shots and other ball striking problems were the real issue. Collect data, all of it, use that to figure out what you need to do!

I have payed for aim point and found it very beneficial I don't always use it though.

Because it takes time.

Over the winter period I am going great to try and work it in to my routine and see where it takes me.

Just finished reading unconscious putting by Stockton. I picked up a number of tips - the biggest is using my right hand as the lead (I'm a lefty). Apparently this reduces the 'strong arc' that I have in my putting stroke. Next on the list is getting the 'eyeline' device.

Stockton has his method for putting but that doesn't mean that it is best for you.  Changing to a lead arm doesn't really change the strong arc;  that is controlled by how far you stand from the ball.  If you are talking about the iPing strong arc measurement then that is rotation.

Interesting - yes that was the feedback from the ping app.

So how does arc differ from rotation?

So how does arc differ from rotation?

Arc is the path the putter travels on. Generally the farther you stand from the ball, the more arc/curve your putter  will have.

Rotation is how much the putter opens and closes during the stroke.  iPing measures the rotation from the start of the forward swing to impact.  If the rotation is 7.5 you are strong.

Generally a player that has a bigger arc will require more rotation.

  • 2 weeks later...

The gap between a good putter and a poor putter is nothing compared to the gap between a good ball striker and a poor one. Your stated goals earlier in this thread aren't realistic. 10 feet is not a realistic 50/50 point. I would argue that most people aren't as bad at putting as they think they are.

Three putt avoidance (distance control) and holing short putts are where the strokes gained are hiding in regards to putting

Well I've got a lot of work to 'free my mind' - definitely a confidence issue. As the same time it's the one part of my bag that I haven't practiced with. AND I know that the clubs I do best with are the ones I have the most confidence in (re: and have practiced the most with).

... And if you are a high index golfer playing different courses, the speed of greens can make it even tougher. My son shoots in the mid to low 90's and we play a lot of different courses. This summer speeds were just all over the map from agonizingly slow to very, vert fast. He is a decent putter on greens with constant mid speed but really struggles when they get very fast or very slow. Especially prone to the downhill putt that rolls a good 6-10 feet past then leaving the next putt short, a little gun shy after running one way past.

... That said, a good putter thinks they are a good putter and poor putter thinks they are a poor putter. The amount of times I have been paired up with players that say things like "this looks like a guaranteed 3 putt" or "I know I am gonna miss this" is just staggering. You absolutely have to think you are going to hole every single putt. Sure sometimes you have be defensive or just try to get to tap in range but in the back of your mind you should think it still has a chance to go in. The power of positive/negative thinking is the most powerful with putting imo because anyone can make a putt from the physically strongest to the weakest because strength doesn't enter into it.

Since I started this thread I have practised my putting on and off the course and as Chisag mentions above I have worked even harder with my mental approach to this part of the game.

I can honestly say I have improved no end over the season.Putting is now something I enjoy and perform at.

Now  will I achieve those targets I previously set?? I see no reason why not.....I have to believe in my self.

I have played the game for one full season now and my handicap is down to 6. I set a target to be down to 5 in one year.

Four weeks ago we lost a family member it`s been a horrific time for me and my family. I am slowly gaining mental clarity again but it`s such a struggle.

I have won the order of merit at my golf club this season. My first season ...... I should be feeling great but ...

Anyway, I am working on a plan and setting new goals for winter.

I`m working with a pro to develop a  strategic training plan covering all aspects of the game. The mental game and also fitness and flexibility.

If any of you more experienced golfers have any positive tips on a plan please feel free to share.
