Wine Me Up

Headhammer

Recommended Posts

A lot of discussion around beer, scotch and other potent potables, but we need a dedicated wine thread. I thought this would be a good place to share some recent wine finds. I've found that people have a hard time remembering great wines they've tried so I thought adding a picture of the label could help. Also it can serve as a repository to refer to when you are shopping for a wine. Anyway here goes.

Wine: The Franc

Winery: Consentino Vineyards

Price: $15

A medium bodied red wine with a very silky texture and aromas and flavors of strawberry & violets. We really liked it with our steaks on the grill.

Wine me up!

Now I can get into this thread. If you like a good Malbec try "1907". It generally runs around $16.

I was always a craft beer guy until someone got me into red blends. The blends tend to be not too dry and not too sweet and very full of fruit flavors. Search those out as an entre into the hobby.

Wine: Sauvignon Blanc

Winery: Kim Crawford

Price: $15

While not my favorite Sauvignon Blanc, its bright flavors of lemon and grapefruit went well with grilled tuna steaks with a wasabi soy sauce and mashed cauliflower with horseradish. I tend to like much bigger bolder wines, but during the summer I really enjoy ice cold sauvignon blanc out on the patio.

Tahbilk Marsanne 2012. One of Australia's best value wines. Sells for around $14 Aus ( ~USD10) and will cellar well for 10+ years.

Manages to be both crisp and fleshy at the same time. Develops a lovely honeyed note with bottle age.

Went a treat with steamed mussels.

One of the few wines that I buy more than a few of year in year out. Great as an everyday quaffed, but builds into something spectacular if given time. Cheap enough to cook with, but still a great drink.

Anniversary dinner so we broke out a special bottle last night. This is one of our favorite wines, Washington state red blend that proves they can compete with Napa. Big, bold, fruity, oaky, yet a nice dry finish with a hint of anise. Went great with our coffee crusted filet mignons!

This is one of our favorite "cheap & cheerful"red blends. Strawberries & cherries are the dominant flavors in this light bodied red blend.

Benevelli Lange Nebbiolo 2012.

Beautiful wine. Rose petal and liquorice root on the nose, more of the same on the palate with dark cherry. Finishes with ultra fine but still raspy (in a good way) tannins.

Went a treat with home made pizza.

A great introduction to how good Nebbiolo from Piedmont can be. If I had an unlimited budget for wine, Barolo and Barbaresco would pretty much be at the top of the list.

Was my mom's birthday tonight so I opened a bottle of one of her favorites, a 2013 Caymus 1858 Cab

Lots of blackberry and plum notes, it needed a lot of time to open up though. Good thing I bought her a decanter for her bday, we got to test it out tonight :) Not so much a pop-and-pour, but it's a solid wine and went well with the ribeyes.

Hoddles Creek Chardonnay 2014, a perennial favourite. White peach, oatmeal and melon. Length and subtle power. Leaner, modern Australian Chardonnay, barrel ferment character, but very little overt oak.

Very age worthy, starting to flesh out, and will age well for at least 5 more years.

Went a treat with Crispy Skinned Salmon

Wine: Sonoma Coast Chardonnay

Winery: Sonoma-Cutrer

Price: $24.00

A decent chardonnay, but not nearly as good as their Russian River chardonnay. This one can't really decide if it wants to be a buttery oaky or a steely citrusy chardonnay, it sort of falls between those extremes leading to a confused palate.

Apparently the 2015 Burgundy harvest was the best it's been in years for both red/white varietals.

A friend and mentor, retired Navy Captain, passed a while back. He had a passion for golf and wine. His wife decided to fund a family vacation by selling off some of his collection. Am looking forward to this bottle and toasting to his memory. Fair winds and following seas shipmate:

We know that Kirkland Signature golf balls generate a lot of talk among our friends, but how about the wines?  I've become a big fan of Kirkland wines for "everyday" drinking and have found a few wonderful bargains.  The Cotes du Rhone Villages for $6.49/bottle is my current favor value wine - don't scoff until you've tried it. :-) There's also a nice cab/merlot blend from the Columbia Valley for under $10.  As with the golf balls, the inventory is usually limited.  For the weekend, bring on  the Amarone!

Kirkland Signature wines are really good- I brought a bottle to my Mom for dinner once and she put it aside, but I cracked it and poured her a glass- when I asked her, she figured maybe $20... It was the $10.99 bottle. Ha!
