Nigl Gartling Gruner Veltiner.

Crisp, spicy but fleshy white from Austria. Grabbed it for a steal from one of the biggest chain wine retailers. Went a treat with fried Calamari.

Disappointed I didn't clean out all the remaining stock when I picked it up.

For those who haven't heard of it, Gruner Veltiner is an aromatic white, with some similarities to Riesling, with flavours moving into apple and pear rather than citrus.

I'm sorry to have left this thread unattended for so long, but I was a on a bunch of medication that restricted my alcohol intake. Now off all meds, I'm back to enjoying my grape juice again!

Wine: Campofiorin

Winery: Masi

Price: $15.99

If you like Italian red wines, specifically Amarones, then this wine if for you. Its big, bold, rustic and for a cheap wine has a 10-year aging potential. It uses a similar wine making process to Amaraones, but at a fraction of the cost. Went great with our steaks and pairs well with red sauces and game.

Santa Julia Reserva Malbec

By: bodega Santa Julia

19.95 per bottle

I'm a big Malbec fan and this is one of the best I've had. It's not the grab you by the throat finish of some Malbecs but more medium.

Wine: Dragon's Tooth

Winery: Trefethen

Price: $45

Dragon's Tooth has been a top recommendation on Wine Spectator for a few years now, but was never able to source it locally. Found a little hole in the wall liquor store that had 4 bottles so I bought them all. This is a red blend, which tend to be very smooth wines, but this one has quite a bite (pun intended). There's not much of a bouquet and the dominant flavor is tart cherries, minerals & graphite with lots of tannins leading to a strong drying finish. Not blown away by this wine, but perhaps with a few more years of age it will mellow.

The most expensive wines I've had are probably the worst tasting I've had.

I've found anything with the Sangiovese grape is really smooth and suits my pallet.

You just haven't had the right expensive wines my friend! That being said, the law of diminishing returns is never more prevalent than in the world of wine and there are some amazing value priced wines.

My wife likes Chardonnay and I like Merlot (yeah, I know, I'm so unsophisticated).  One reason I like Merlot is that other reds tend to either give me a headache.  During the Thanksgiving and Christmas season, we sample various wines, but rarely anything over $15/bottle.

Bought a case Napa valley red wine from Costco last year to take to a big family thanksgiving worked out to about 6.50 a bottle.

Wife and I celebrated her 40th in Napa and toured the wine train and since have always been on the look out for Napa wines. We sampled a few bottles of wines in the 100-125 range and they were good, not great.

Like most at 6.50 a bottle I was not expecting much but it was amazing, went back a couple days later and they were sold out and not expecting more as it was some lot sale or pallet sale or something .

I typically target wines that are priced in the 18-30 dollar.

It didn't really effect the tasting. This was my first Cakebread cab and I was very pleased despite the glass.

We let it breathe for ten minutes before tasting and it was a real treat.

I'll be interested in hearing how you enjoy your experience.

My wife and are seasonal wine drinkers. We are about 2 weeks away from breaking it out again here in the PNW. (Hopefully)

Big fans of Cab, Syrah, Red Blends, Pinot Grigio

We have a local cellar here named Mark Ryan. They make some good bottles. Numbskull being one of my faves.

Also Horse Heaven Hills or H3 out of the Tri-Cities.

Wine: Saugvignon Blanc

Winery: Craggy Range

Price: $19.99

A really nice sauvignon blanc from New Zealand with a citrus & honey aroma. Honey, lemon & cantaloupe are the main flavors and crispy grapefruit finish that lingers for a while. Paired well with tuna steaks with a citrus topping.

Wine - Jorio montepulciano d'abruzzo

Winery- Umani Ronchi

Price - 21 Canadian

Avg score 85-89

Little above my average per bottle purchase and not one I would rush to buy again but not terrible.

Critics take: soft medium bodied , moderately acidic and light tannic. Nicely balanced , juicy, easy going and quite enjoyable.

Wine: CDP

Winery: Halter Ranch

Price: $15.95

Discovered Halter Ranch on a trip to Paso Robles, CA while playing the golf course with the same name. Their CDP, a Chateauneuf du Pape clone, is a very nice red blend for the money. Aromas of red currents and peaches with similar flavors. Paired well with roast pork tenderloin crusted with espresso, brown sugar & cumin.

Winery: J.V. Fleury

Wine: GSM

Price: $11.99

This is a cheap & cheerful red wine that is very food friendly and is soft enough to drink all evening by itself. Red raspberry flavors dominate the aroma with similar flavors, also red cherries, some spice and dry floral finish.

Made it to the Bay Area last month with my family. We spent a Sunday in Napa with my brothers and their wives, our parents as well as my daughter and nephew. The wineries we visited were family friendly and Gott’s roadside burger stand was A-O-K ;)

Napa is interesting. I felt underwhelmed by the scenery of the Napa valley. Coming from Upstate / Western, NY we are blessed with the finger lakes. This region (finger lakes) is one of the most beautiful destinations in our country. The wine specialties are very unique and feature Rieslings as the premier white and Cabernet Franc as the feature red.

Although the NYS views are gorgeous, Napa wines are second to none in my personal opinion; they cater to a very specific demographic in price and quality. All that said, time spent with family is great time spent.

Photos are from Couvaison and Rombauer as well as the Bay Area. Interesting. I’m originally from PA, moved to Oakland 20 years ago and have spent the last four near Napa. I find this area the most beautiful in the world. But not just the scenery, but the weather too.

My wife who grew up in California liked how PA is lush when we go back to visit. To me “ lush” just means humid.

Plus, we golf year round here

Interesting. I’m originally from PA, moved to Oakland 20 years ago and have spent the last four near Napa. I find this area the most beautiful in the world. But not just the scenery, but the weather too.

My wife who grew up in California liked how PA is lush when we go back to visit. To me “ lush” just means humid.

Plus, we golf year round here

The climate is wonderful. I should have been more specific in my original intent...the aesthetic beauty of the NY wine region and finger lakes. This is where I married my wife a few years ago, I guess I’m bias IMG_9607.JPG

No worries, we all have our preferences.

I’m just glad I live near Napa, and not in Napa. Too much traffic with all the weekenders coming up from the city.

You play any of the courses out here?

The traffic!!!!

Wow we couldn’t believe how steady it was. Making turns without a traffic stop was something.

No golf this time. The only course I have my eyes set on for some odd reason is Northwood golf club near Healdsburg. It’s a McKenzie course and it looks gorgeous.

Where do you play most often?

Made it to the Bay Area last month with my family. We spent a Sunday in Napa with my brothers and their wives, our parents as well as my daughter and nephew. The wineries we visited were family friendly and Gott’s roadside burger stand was A-O-K default_wink.png

We made the Wine/Bay Area/ Redwood trip about 12 years ago. Loved Napa (especially the wind caverns) and Redwoods were pretty cool.
