Ben Crane Penalized 8 shots

bens197

Recommended Posts

Ben Crane was penalized 8 shots for head measurement technology stickers that were still on his club heads.

This is where golf loses me.  There is no benefit to any player during a round who has stickers on his club.  The slow growth to common sense has been a painful road.  Even if these added weight they are no different than lead tape.

This ruling makes me cringe, the antiquated stuffy rules of this game are true resistance to progress.

There has to be a point where logic takes over. That is just silly. A guy I played with in our club championship was using a new driver, still had the barcode sticker on the shaft. Is that nonconforming? Didn't seem to help him much.

And they do this after all the controversy the last 2 years. I hope it wasn't someone who noticed it and call it in

Stupid ruling.

He didn't use either his driver of 6i, and gained no advantage.  There wouldn't have been an advantage if had used them, but then he would have been disqualified.

It wouldn't even be a penalty under the new rules they are considering for 2019.

Crazy.Their rules have little bearing on my game or others I join up with.We follow the "basic" rules to our best abilities. These petty calls will never be apart or interfere with my game

"Petty" is right on.

I thought I read something this morning where Ben said he called the penalty on himself.

Even worse, today they DQed him. Because....... he told the official with his group about the stickers, but he didn't tell his playing partners until later that he had to take the two clubs out of play. He was DQed for talking to the rules official instead of notifying his playing partners. You can't make this stuff up

It was because he declared his driver out of play but did NOT declare his 6 iron out of play, he didn't declare the 6 iron until hol 14, 3 holes later, so he knowingly had a non conforming club in his bag, and did not declare it as such, even though he didn't even use it.

I think we all agree that some of these common sense situations have been lost with the decision makers of golf. This is just as bad as some of the other ones that have been called.

I really didn't give it a thought but yea the seniors here buy a new club it goes in the bag and the only time a club is removed can't jam any more clubs in the bag. Belly putters yup see a few. It's a bunch of old farts having fun and the main job is busting b@@$$.

How many times has one of these guys go back to the tee box and re hit after lost ball mmmm not very often, only in real $$ Tournaments and those are few and in between.

As I was reading about this today, the question that came to my mind was how were the stickers any different than lead tape? Honest question. Can someone explain? Is it because the stickers are part of a training aid?

The difference between stickers on the face of the club (probably left after a training session with a swing analyzer) and lead tape on the bottom of the club is location.  If he does hit the ball off-center enough to hit a sticker, it WILL influence the flight of the ball.  That's why you're not allowed to have anything on the face of the club.  Lead tape, and other stuff that gets stuck to other parts of the club are specifically allowed, if you read the decisions.  He knew the rule, he screwed up when he quit his practice session and didn't remove the stickers.  This is NOT poor decision by the officials, they were simply enforcing the current rules.  And this rule will NOT change in 2019.

Well, yes. The descision was correct, but I think what everyone is saying is, the rules can be ridiculous. it's absolutely stupid to give a guy and 8 stroke penalty because of a tiny sticker on his club. At that point, you have to ask, "what about the 4 different kinds of stickers you find on shafts (barcodes, shaft brand stickers, etc.)? After all, they do add weight to the club... "
