No sage like wisdom??

I've averaged 33 putts a round this season. (So far) and it's actually dropped since I switched to a blade putter.

Let's face it there are two ways to become a better putter. Improve your putting or hit the ball closer to the hole.

Generally speaking when people think they aren't putting well it's a proximity to the hole issue.

I agree. When I have a "bad day" putting, it's not really my putting that's the problem. Most of the time it's my irons and wedges that's off. What I mean is, if you have a 40' putt instead of a 15' putt, your chances of a three putt are highly likely. You have to do everything well in order for a low score. Get off the tee well. Hit GIR (within 15'-20'). It sounds easy enough, but that means sometimes you have to play for a bogey instead of an unrealistic birdie or par.

This was a game changing concept for me. Before I would to land the ball at the beginning of the green under the assumption that I didn't want the ball to potentially roll off the greens. Note most of our greens have dramatic slopes. This generally resulted in 3-4 putts

I've since focused on iron work that gets me closer to the pin - when I'm successful doing that (still a lot of work to do) it's amazing how many fewer putts I have.

For you low handicappers I know this is like SOP but for us newbies or at least me its a revelation: and the ability to execute on irons is easier than putting

If you do hit the green then yes, but missing the green every single time will give you less putts than hitting it to 10 feet every time (unless chipping is a big struggle).

Thank you Reverend Obvious!   :D

Since my ball striking is not that great, I am not likely to hit the ball closer to the hole on a consistent basis which is why I spend a lot of time on putting practice.  Some days are better than others, but overall my putting can produce a decent round or save a mediocre round from becoming a really awful round.

Kenny - if you aren't hitting the green isn't chipping and pitches no more important than putting?

I would think working on your chipping, pitching and short putting would be most important for a player like you. In fact putting might be less important. You don't have as many players by putts - unless you are playing on Bermuda and chunking by your chips. :)

I probably work on chipping and pitching more than putting, and I practice putting a lot!!  It does pay off.

Today I chipped in for birdie on the par 4 #7, then almost chipped in for birdies on the par 4's #10 and #11; hit the stick on #11.  That was just before the ace on #12.

Having the putt be "inside the leather" is a long know approach for gimmie putts. Even used to speed up the game. Surprised that this approach surprised you.

Do you remember the video of Harpo Marx playing with Bob Hope?  Harpo had a putter that extended twice as long for gimme's!  Hilarious.

Yes, it rained a little last night, but we needed it.  Washed the smoke out of the air.  The rest of the week is partly cloudy with highs in the 60's.  Nice weather actually.

That was about 15+ years ago, I had only been playing for about 3 years.. But not seriously.. So i knew about gimme's and Pick it up.. but not the inside the leather..

That's SOP for men's league at our club but our informal protocol is that your competitor announces 'that's good'. Obviously you still take the stroke. For tournaments, however, you do have to hole it out.

Interestingly in the women's league (same club) they have to whole everything out.

In fairness, it would take just as much effort to measure as it would to just sink the putt.

In our group birdies are never a "gimmie", never. Pars have to be well within the "leather" to be conceded. Bogie's are much more generous, but not stupid long either.
