The Vietnam War

Recommended Posts

After reading this post I thought back about family in the service. It's amazing how each generation of my family there was great uncles WWI, father, all uncles WWII, 2nd cousins and uncle Korea (he caught end of WWII & Korea).

Then my generation I was the only one of the cousins who was in the service, never thought about it till now. After me that's it no one else so far. One of my nephews in CA is planning on West Point after high school. Hope he gets in.

Rick, the CGA doesn't require the Congressional letters that the other services do. If he is interested in the Coast Guard at all it would be worth a look.

CG makes sense.

At the outbreak of WWII my father tried to enlist in all the major services but was listed 4F due to bad feet. Someone mentioned the CG to my dad and he was accepted. He spent most of the war in the Pacific (Philippines) and like most vets didn't really like talking about it.

He did discuss it a little with my uncles who also were in WWII.

For any of you vets who were in Nam there is a good group forum on Facebook where you can possibly contact old buddies.   It's a closed group and you have to be approved by the admins however check it out to see if you qualify.

I fully expected to be sent to Nam. However, the draft and call up ended my senior year in HS. Yes, I was glad. And yes I respect those that served. It could have been me. Would have been.

I've been able to watch a number of episodes in Vietnam on PBS. I think it's been pretty good and fairly told.

We must be close in age (I'm 62 now) ... my senior year of high school was 73-74 which coincided with the draft ending and (our participation in..) the war winding down. Yes, I confess I was nervous and scared but somehow ended up with a high lottery number (ie. little chance of getting called up).

Was focused on finishing high school and going to college - that's what was "expected"...

Your experiences were different then mine. While in Quang Tri, a young boy of about 12 came to our camp with his hand wrapped in a rag bandage, crying and asking to see the "bacsi", Vietnamese for doctor. When the navy corpsman came up to the boy, the kid shot him dead with a .45 that he was holding under the makeshift bandage.

Sorry, I have no pity left in me. Truth is, war is war. If humanitarian aid is required send the red cross, not military troops.

Sad event.... Two Summers ago spent some time chatting with a Corpsman (in a wheelchair) at a VA - he never wanted wanted to talk about any specifics of any actions he got caught up in, other than "man there was some s**t over there".....

Just catching up on this thread ... hope the news was *not* the worst.

I was scheduled for a brain scan at the Augusta VA in December of last year. I canceled as symptoms were getting better.  So far so good and I'm hanging in there. Thanks for your concern! Now the VA and I are going round and round with hearing + tinnitus along with PTSD.  I have a hearing with a panel coming up in May. I'm hoping my compensation will go up once evidence is proven for my appeal.

I served a tour of duty in Vietnam from 70 - 71 with the 22nd Replacement Battalion at Cam Ranh Bay. Anybody else serve during this war? I'm interested in the series: http://www.pbs.org/kenburns/the-vietnam-war/home/

I was one of the lucky ones. Did my time but never left the states.

I'll pass on the Facebook link to my friends who went to Nan. There are a lot of Vers here.

Much respect to everyone who served. In my area, I'm surrounded by military and the government. One neighbor has a husband who is in special forces so he disappears for a few months at a time. Tough on them so we have them over quite a bit to pass the time more quickly. I appreciate all the sacrifices made by all our vets. It is sad on how society has seemingly turned on vets and the services.

Thank you all for your service. My father did his hitch on the Korean DMZ in '68-'69, and most all of my Uncles, Grandfathers, etc. (and a few aunts) served in one way or another. My Pa came back and couldn't get comfortable in any regular job so he took a job helping vets, and worked 30+ years, traveling alot- away from his wife and family- making much less money than he could have in another sector, because he believed that those who serve deserve our best. Maybe it was instilled in me from a young age that service comes before self. I tried to join the Marine Corps in '97, but was 4-F because of flat feet and "bad" knees. A couple of my buddies got in and they have seen stuff that I couldn't imagine on my darkest day. To this day I regret not making the cut, but I am thankful for never having to go through what many others have. I guess I'm getting self-righteous here, but I'm trying to say thank you all for having our back, and for that I will always have yours.

I lost an Uncle very near the end of the Vietnam war, he was a radio operator. He was very close to my mom. I used to read the letters he would write to her. I think she still has them somewhere. He also I believe was awarded the Silver Star, and he was awarded the Purple Heart, my Grandma used to have it displayed in the house with his photo, and flag. As a young kid I didn't fully understand it, it was just pretty cool that I could look at and actually hold a Purple Heart, it's wasn't until I got older older that I fully understand the meaning of it all.

My stepdad also served in Vietnam as a Marine, he has many stories, but like many old vets, it's not easy for him to share them. If there is a group of us, 3 of my brothers, 2 nephews, and myself talking And chatting about our time served, he will give is small snipets of what he endured in his time.

A co-worker of mine (retired Navy Master Chief who served in Viet Nam) said he had a difficult time watching one of the episodes last night -He stated it was very true to life and very difficult to watch even now- watching young men who want to "find action" actually finding it, with unfortunate results.

I find it difficult to watch many of the movies surrounding either the Gulf war or current Operation Iraqi Freedom/ Operation Enduring Freedom movies, as they can not match the incredible periods of mind numbing boredom interrupted by moments of sheer terror; the episodes of misguided or uncontrolled aggression and anger (which should not be part of a mission calculus); but most of all because the movies rarely capture the human dimension- individuals who are trying to do the right thing, on both sides, despite the odds and the administrative and logistical chasms one must overcome.

Of course, none of this is ever reported in the press, because the human element, and doing the right thing doesn't "Make the News!" Countless units and individuals did incredible acts of selflessness, I am sure it has occurred time and time again, but I can only speak of my own experiences- as an example.

During the fall and winter of 2003, while in Iraq, we spent some time using Commander's emergency Relief funds to rebuild schools in and around our operating area. The objective was three-fold- first, to help create some positive interaction between US and coalition forces and the Iraqi people who were suffering. Second, to put money back into the Iraqi economy, so they could again become self-sufficient and rely on their own efforts instead of a welfare state. Third, as you build trust and confidence, you can learn more about where potential issues (i.e. bad guys) were, and plan to eliminate that potential threat.

At one of the schools where we oversaw the reconstruction, the Headmaster asked me if one of the teachers could speak to me- I of course said yes, and the teacher told me of her older daughter, Saffa, who had Cerebral Palsy. There was little we could do, but my doctor expressed a positive attitude and offered some recommendations to make her life a bit easier.

As we drove away later that afternoon, Doc asked me about getting a wheelchair for Saffa. Well, in a combat zone, if you need a wheelchair, you are medivac'ed to a location outside of the area where you can be treated, so wheelchairs were nowhere to be found.

I sent an email to a friend in back in the States, who put me in touch with the CEO of a large medical organization- who promptly offered to deliver a wheelchair -and several days later DHL showed up and indeed delivered a wheelchair- the photo shows a smile that makes almost everything else pale in comparison- and I am sure stories like this have occurred time and time again. But you rarely, if ever see or hear them on the news, and that is a very sad commentary indeed.

I served myself in Desert Storm, years later I had a cousin, and 2 nephews serve operation enduring freedom, my cousin and one of my nephews spent several tours on the ground in Iraq, and they would tell stories just like this. They would say the kids would play and greet them. They would have a good time in some of the towns along the way, but you never saw that side of the war.

Lefties are always in their Right Mind
