Underwater Photography, my other passion

Recommended Posts

As some of you may know from following PA/MD/VA/DC/WV/NJ/NY Meet Up,

Carolina Golfer, Wahoo and me got together and had a great time at Compass Pointe.   In the bar having a bite to eat and a diet pepsi, we were talking about things other than golf, and I mentioned that HH6 ("Household 6" - if you are not sure, ask any Infantryman) and I enjoy SCUBA diving.  We are lucky enough to be able to get away every so often, and I enjoy taking photos while under water-

CG said he would like to see some, and I should start a thread, so here we are.

I will post a few images, along with a short description and location.  If I get enough interest, I will post more.  Hope you all enjoy!!

Those are awesome Drew. By all means keep then coming.

I'm not always interested in nature type things. But the pics you showed last night and these are really fascinating to me.

Great pictures, ddyran.   You should post the hammerhead shark picture you showed Carolina and me.

Wahoo, as requested...

Stud, any time- sounds like I need to make a trek down your way, another round of golf and we can discuss diving and underwater photography...

I took these down in Bimini several years ago- Wife wanted to dive with Hammerheads-  Awesome experience- these are about 15-16 foot boys- about as big as they get.  They are not at all aggressive- in fact, are a bit skittish- they don't like to be touched, are only coming close for the food that the research team was feeding them, and then would peel away.

I have dived with many sharks- Reef sharks, white and black tips, nurse sharks, of course these hammerheads, and the occasional Bull Shark- and while I am aware that these animals can hurt you, I am only really concerned when it comes to the Bull shark- very unpredictable and they eat anything...  But they don't usually get that close, which is fine by me.

Had one shown up during the dive where I took these photos, we would have aborted the dive- Bulls are just too unpredictable.

Enjoy!

Great pictures!   Just be careful.

Two years ago, one of my wife's professional photographer friends was lost off the coast of Victoria, BC,  His diver friend saw him sink but couldn't get to him; apparent stroke or heart attack.  His body was found 8 months later.  Within a month of that happening one of my best friends, golfer, and professional associate had a heart attack while scuba diving in the Grand Caymans.  They got him to the boat but it was too late.

Awesome thread! I use to watch a show called sea hunt when I was a kid. Loyd Bridges was the star and I always wanted to be a diver. No diving but I did do snorkeling which was pretty cool.

Love the photos; I love watching animals in their natural habitat. I should really take up nature photography as a hobby

Would love to do the underwater stuff too; but the water in my area isn't clean enough and we don't have the tropical fish like those.

My wife works at a trauma center.   Many times, she is asked to be "on call" in the event that the use of the hyberbaric chamber is required.  As a trauma center, it has what's known as a multiplex chamber available and is one of the few that do.  She has to go into the chamber with the patient.   Most times, it is to treat what is known as a CO, but many times, it's a diver with the bends.  One would think that it, most likely, would be a rookie diver, but many times, it is an experienced diver.   It can be a six hour procedure, they use the US Navy dive tables, which means that she is no longer on call. .

I also watched that show when I was a kid. I always wanted to be a diver but found out in the Navy that I had inner ear problems causing vertigo. That knocked me out of diving and getting a pilot's license. One of the reasons I shuffle the feet during the golf swing to keep balance

I know I am the same way. We call it CRS Syndrome as in can't remember s**t. In polite company we call it a "senior moment". I seem to get them more and more every year

Love your pics. Haven't been diving in awhile but my wife and I were avid divers for many years. Here's some pics we took although some of these were pre dlsr days. Enjoy.

I have often wondered why divers always fall backwards into the water.   Then I realized that if they fell forward that they would land in the boat.

We have t-shirts that we wear on the boat, and the words on the back are upside-down- and they read "if you can read this, I have fallen off the boat, please pull me back in!"
