How much variability do you have in distance

tony@CIC

Recommended Posts

All things being equal - temp, wind, etc. how much distance variability do you have with your irons. For instance some days, or even holes my PW is 110 yds other times 95-100 yds.

I'm just trying to manage my expectations

I'm fairly consistent on distances with short and mid irons but once I get up to 4-iron through driver I can have a 10-15 yard variable on off days. I might throw in sucky distance control on putting lol.

I'm pretty consistent. Of course if I'm not hitting it well all bets are off but assuming I'm around the sweet spot my distances remain the same - time of year matters - I start picking up yardage from December through May. That's predictable though.

I'm pretty consistent but a mishit or poor lie or too much fade can really affect your distance ... 10-15 yards short easy... and a flyer lie or a swing where you nut it with the face closed a bit-- you can ADD 10-15 yards!

From 6i down it's around 20 yards difference. If I “nut” one it's 10 yards longer (not that it happens a lot). If I miss lick one it's 10 yards shorter(on average). 5i-Driver it could be anything. I've hit my driver from 20 yards (from topping one) to 300+ with an awesome bounce and roll out.

One out of maybe every 10 rounds I'm a club longer with my irons. Can't explain why other than maybe weather, barometric pressure, who knows but can really throw me off.

Well Tony, you and I are about the same age, so I will say that there are certain days when I feel better than other days.  I could easily be off 10 yards with my PW, depending on how much body rotation I have and if I'm on the sweet spot or not.  I can tell pretty quickly if I need to club up, and I will play away from trouble until the swing feels good.  Late in a round is also a time when I will take more club... just because.

Probably within 5-10 yards. I find that on days where I am really hitting it well, I gain about a club length. I try to play to what my stock yardages are, sometimes I'm a little shorter on the day so I will add a club and other days I'm longer so I decrease a club. So it guess I play whatever game I brought that day. Time of year here makes a difference as well.

Great point about taking more club late in the round. Lately the back nine has been troublesome (and it's not anymore challenging than the front). I'll have to try that next round.

I like to feel that I'm pretty consistent especially with my shorter irons but I can't tell you the number of times I've hit a shot and said, "Be really good" only to have it be ten+ yards long for no real reason other than I pured it (I play forged blade/CB irons, so I don't think it's a hot spot like I would see in something cast).

I have no idea how to determine my distance variability. I live at sea level in the Florida Panhandle. Here I am lucky crack 240 yds with my driver. I travel to Seattle quite often and play at courses also at sea level and often hit 260-270 yds. The only thing I can think of is the relative humidity is much higher in the Panhandle.

I try to swing as fast as I can while still being in control so I can have confidence when I step over the ball it will fly distance it usually does. Obviously there are points in the round where we don't do what we want, but that's why no one pays to watch me play. Some days I can't find the center of the clubface to save my life, but thats another story

Probably 5-10 yards on most days, but most amateur golfers can have bad mishits that come up 15 yards short.....or the occasional shot that's “nutted” or “flushed” that just sails 15 yards further than normal.

I had one of the latter yesterday.....had 143 to a back pin into a slight breeze...my 8 iron is my 140-145 club.....I hit one of those pure shots where you can feel the ball compress...it launched super high and right at the flag, I was waiting to get rewarded with a great shot only to watch the ball sail right over the stick and 20 yards over the green.....Arccos measured it at 168 yards.......I wish I hit a 168 yard 8 iron!

The only consistency I have is my inconsistency, so I always take one more club then I would if I used range distances.

Surprisingly (or not) I'm still usually short.

The only club I have any distance control with is the putter.
