Putter Paint Fill and Shaft Blackout

Recommended Posts

This is my recommendation as well. I think you saw how this came out on my MLA. I used this: https://www.ebay.com/itm/2-1-Heat-shrink-Tubing-5-8-10FT-Black/263350448613

This requires the grip be removed right? That's the only thing stopping me from trying it on my Odyssey putter.

Now, I'm about to replace the grip on my MLA so I might give it a try on that one.

Yeah, you'd have to remove either the head or the grip.

Great job especially the taping.  There is a lot of work to get that perfect.  It looks way better than it did.

Yeah, you'd have to remove either the head or the grip.

The tube you used, was it pretty thin? I know SS grips are already tough to get on so I don't want to make it even harder by thickening up the shaft.

It's hard to quantify the thickness without measuring, but the Flat Cat has that conical part at its base, and it went on just fine. The key is that when you're installing, there's no good reason to put the shrink wrap all the way up to the butt end of the shaft. Measure down the shaft the distance that the grip will cover, and maybe have the shrink wrap go an inch or so over that. Then put the grip tape over that, and (in my experience) the grip slides right on.

Thanks for that information. How far up to do was another question I had so I'm glad you mentioned that.

I think I'm gonna give this a shot. A blacked out MLA will look cool.

Ah yes, the Stubby. Relaunched as the Smart Square Stubby when Cleveland tried the Smart Square line. Jacob Van Zyl used it on the European Tour during a round last year. One of the oddities of club design I would love to add to the ol' collection.

I was seriously on the fence until I saw your comment. The stock Forward grip is just so pleasing to the eye I was going to try to change my grip and make it work. But now I owe it to you to make my putter look awesome 🤩

I've got a buddy that works at Dick's so I may just see if he can save the Forward grip then I'll do the makeover.

Haha! If you've got a grip removal tool, it's an easy process. I've done the heat shrink project before on my TFI 2135 putter, and it is definitely an easy way to black out a shaft. However, I wanted a legit black shaft so I just ordered one from GolfWorks. Looks pretty awesome.

I love DIY stuff like this, and now you've got me wondering what things I should customize.

One of these days, I'll just bite the bullet and get a grip removal tool. But I just can't find any for what I consider to be a "fair" price.

$20+ for the metal blade just seems like too much for how simple it is. Then the injector is like $60+ and I've got no use for it besides my grips.

My budget approach: squirt some grip solvent in the vent hole of the grip. Put a needle in a pump (I don't have a compressor with storage, just an automatic tire inflator). Put the needle into the vent hole, pressing down enough to seal the end and let the pressure build in the shaft.

Systematically let the pressure build, so that the solvent starts working down the grip, and let off the pressure if the grip begins inflating at all.

It works better than my awkward description here suggests. Pulled the standard grip off my MLA this way with no trouble at all.

So how much total grip solvent are we talking? That sounds like a teaspoon or so. I've got a test club and a bike pump I can try this with.

Don't you guys know anyone who works at a Pro Shop or somebody who knows someone kind of thing? Check out your golf buddies there's always a “guy”. Usually removing a grips not a big deal by someone who knows what they're doing. Check around maybe get lucky. Or with nothing to do in cold weather you just might want to experiment . Anyway I'm following your progress. My MLA needs a bit of dressing up.

I suspect that's the right amount.

The challenge of the bike pump, as I'm picturing it, is that the air line isn't going to be long enough to pump with your foot while you're holding the club.

If someone else can do the pumping, that might work.

I'm a combination of cheap and a hobbyist. I take pride in doing the work myself and customizing my own clubs the way I want them even if it's not a perfect job. I never work on friends clubs but I'd be glad to do so if they asked.

The bike pump is one you stand on and push with your hands. I think the hose is long enough to make this happen.

Understanable. I do a lot of grip removals for myself, as well as a few buddies of mine, and it easily pays for itself after just removing one set.

I was cheap at first, tried the wire coat hanger and solvent and it was a PITA and took forever haha. I said screw it and just dropped $20 and now it's easy as pie.

I bought a small air compressor this winter, so now I wanna learn how to do it that way.

After a LOT of elbow grease, I got the test grip off. It took me a bit to learn the technique but I got rolling once I figured it out.

I'm not sure if this method will work for the Forward grip as it's much more rigid. We'll see if I'm feeling frisky or not.

I did, on a shaft. In my experience, it began peeling almost immediately. And this, on a shaft from which I sanded all the chrome. I've heard others having better success, but my own experience with this was not good.

Forgot all about Plasti dip. I dipped the grille on my SUV a few years ago that turned out okay. Imo, it's a tough product to master, so much different than a can of spray paint.

But... Now you got me thinking.

Forgot all about Plasti dip. I dipped the grille on my SUV a few years ago that turned out okay. Imo, it's a tough product to master, so much different than a can of spray paint.

But... Now you got me thinking.

oh oh

Use a saws all. Or just a box cutter. You are not planning on reusing the grip ? Perfect time for some knife skills.

I have a hook blade I usually use but I do want to save it. If for no other reason, the grip is just too nice and attractive to slice and dice.

I'm not sure what I'll do with it, but it won't hurt anything to have a couple "rescued" grips laying around.
