Cleveland wedges softer metal ?

Recommended Posts

As I was cleaning my clubs Ping g20 and Cleveland RTX wedges it was apparent that the Cleveland wedges which are new in 2017 have more dings than my g20's that are 5 years old.

The dings look like they're from bouncing around in the bag and not from hitting hard surfaces on the ground.

Is that because the metal is softer in the Cleveland's vs Pings?

I am no expert, but I would say yes that it is likely the case that one is "softer" than the other. I believe the G20's are cast, and the RTX wedges are probably forged. There will be some more qualified than I about the ins and outs of why, and they will chime in I'm sure.

The RTX are cast as well. It might have something to do with the heat treating that Ping does with their clubs. It's one of the reasons that Pings are the only cast clubs that can safely be bent more than a degree or two if necessary.

Think this is the reason. I did a review on the rtx's and they are cast like pings but they are a bit softer. They get little nicks pretty easily. Still perform well for me though.

... not sure about the specific Cleveland's you're referring to but I had both Cleveland and Callaway wedges last year and switched to the Ping Glide 2.0 and notice a distinct difference in the clubface in regards to nicks and scratches over the season.  The Ping's have a different steel and held up very well to regular use.

Ping G20 - 17-4 Stainless Steel

RTX 2.0 - 9620 carbon steel

RTX 3 - 8620 carbon steel

So yes, the RTX wedges use a different (softer) steel

This is what I was thinking about with the types of metal. Stainless vs carbon.
