Hopefully we won't be getting too many Nor'easters this year but nevertheless it's getting to be that time. I'm curious - ..for those that live in colder climates, when do you decide to put the bag away for the season? (first snow, below 40 degrees, etc.?) Do you realize it's probably your last round? Do you do anything special? Also - during the offseason - do you use a simulator occasionally just to keep the swing grooved? ..for those that live in warmer climates, do you ever have an off season? Do you taper down a bit in the fall/winter or do you play as much as normal? Does your handicap fluctuate at all during the year? My frequency of play slows down as it gets harder to find playing partners and daylight. I have a high tolerance for the cold so I don't mind going out even when the temps get below freezing. Those rounds are nice because you're by yourself on the course and can often work on things. Even still, we've got intermittent weather that affords us some decently warm weather on random days. That being said, I don't typically spend much time on the range through the winter because I hate hitting off mats. I just chip and putt in my basement. Generally speaking each season has its pluses or minuses. Summer is hot and wet, courses are lush, soft, they play ridiculously large big and the rough is brutal. But they are easier to get on and play is fast. If I pick the proper set of tees I will generally play okay in the summer. Shoulder seasons are maintenance times so you will see aeration. They are aerating the greens at my club today in fact. The weather is better and articulately in the spring and late fall and rates are still reasonable. I play my best golf from Mid October through the end of the year. Courses play shorter, the rough is dormant and it's cooler. Winter is fine, courses are in great shape but crowded. I avoid playing away from the club because I prefer to play in under four hours. The further into the winter we get the shorter and easier the courses play. The only real issue tends to be wind. Early spring and late Fall are my favorites times of year to play. That's a good indicator that summer is over. But, with high school golf going on right now, my game is really peaking and I'm not stopping anytime soon. Now living in FL everything changed. Never shut down, if fact don't slow down. Play later in the day when it warms up. May miss a few days due to cold, but cold in FL is a nice day in CT. I'll probably stay away from the game until maybe late Jan, Early Feb when our Golf Center at a Casino starts the 2018 demo season. Then some indoor range sessions for the first time in a while, them my hopefully mid April we'll be ready. I would define our extended or silly season as the remaining 3 months when one checks the weather not only for precipitation but temperature and wind as well. One can dress for temperature, but the wind will just go right through ya. Fortunately, I have easy access to the Ocean City courses where the winter temperatures seem to be 10 degrees warmer and where it rarely snows. However, there will be random days where the temp is above average and you can sneak out in December or January sometimes. Unfortunately, my offseason involves zero golf. No simulator. No range. Nothing. I'm in the process of fixing up my shop so I can setup a net and hit when the weather doesn't permit. My hobbies usually switch come cold weather anyway, then back to golf when it warms up. I'll hit the simulator occasionally through the winter but that's about it for my winter golf work. I don't do anything special for the end of the year and sometimes you know its the last round, sometimes you don't. It's the price you pay for being a golfer living in MN. This year i plan to play every few weeks during the winter to keep the swing going. I got from a 10 to a 6 this year and I want to take another leap. I usually end up thanksgiving weekend (our club has a turkey trot scramble generally the Friday after). Everything but the putter gets put away. I have a new putting mat in the basement so that's going to get a lot of use. Once it starts warming up a bit - sunshine and 30's I start chipping practice. Big money Posted October 18, 2017 Share Posted October 18, 2017 I live just outside of St Joe Michigan.Temps have already started to dip into mid 40's a few mornings already-high 50 mid day.With those temps,I have already put a majority of my clubs in storage.Will leave out a 5 iron-driver-wedge for winter heated range practice.
