Kenny B
Every year I make a goal to travel and meet more MGS members. Somehow that didn't happen this year. So, this next year I will make the same goal. Hope to see y'all because I am running out of years. “We don’t stop playing the game because we get old; we get old because we stop playing the game.”
Rusty1885
As for the mental side, I'm at the most Zen than I've been. My scoring has obviously been at my peak as well. While I wish that I have my distance from a few years ago or better yet from 14 years ago, I'm quite content with what I have going now. If my progress would freeze at this point I'd be happy with my game for the rest of my life. The one ultimate goal I probably going to miss this year is my daughter didn't pick up the game yet. That's most likely going to happen before the end of next year. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro
STUDque
Goal 1: Win league championship - check! Goal 2: Break 40 for 9 - check! (4 times) Goal 3: Break 80 - not yet but came close (81) Goal 4: Avg in the 80s - check! (none > 90) Goal 5: Win work scramble - check! Bonus Goal 1: Gain confidence inside 100y - big-time check! Bonus Goal 2: Make a shot from +100y - not yet. Closest was 3ft Bonus Goal 3: Play golf with an MGS member - double check! (ddryan and CG2) This was a fun exercise. I'd definitely say those is the best season I've had yet and it leaves me with a lot of promise for the future. I'll have to think a bit about next year's goals. I'm close to meeting my current goals but just don't get to play often enough (darn work and kids ). Still time to knock those out. GolfSpy Barbajo
Great thread - thanks for posting it! My season was odd - played a lot, but didn't practice nearly enough. Set a new career low (73 - twice), but my 100 yard and in game was more off than on. I hit some serious bombs with the driver, but my overall game off the tee was frustrating and very Scott Norwood-like (wide right). Handicap was as low as 5.1, and as high as 6.8. As Browns fans say, there's always next year. Due to health concerns, I didn't get to play as often as I would have liked. But this year was better than last year when my doctor told me to stay off the course for several months. On extremely hot days, I just kept my butt on the recliner and didn't bother to go to the course. As a result, my golfing goals have become more philosophical than specific. That is, while playing better is still a factor, just being on the course and enjoying time with my buds has assumed even greater importance. So while I played less and didn't score better, I did meet my goals. Specifically, I became more thankful that I was playing and enjoying the social aspects of the game and I finished each round on the green side of the grass. Kor.A.Door
I don't set to many goals, but my lowest hcp this season is 4.4 so that's improving, I shot a 74 at a difficult course, I shot 33 on the back nine, I also had my first Hole in One this season. I was fortunate enough to be able to play Pinehurst#2 this season. It was a good year, I am looking forward to continuing to play well, and learn. One goal for next season will be to not always go for it, the last couple rounds I have had some iffy lies after not so good swings, I cost myself a bunch of strokes in 2 rounds by trying to be the hero, so instead of taking the big number out of play, I brought it into play with the decision. So I need to focus on mentally playing a smart game and makin better choices. Lefties are always in their Right Mind

Txmason123
I would say I reached my goals for this year. I am consistently shooting under 100. I really want to be under a bogey golfer, but that is a pretty lofty goal since this is only my second year. ddryan
Did not set concrete goals last year- although I am always working to bring down my index (low of 10.6 this year, currently at 11.6) and more consistency off the tee. Did have one, my club Member-Guest tournament- and we won our flight again this year, but lost in the playoff (12 flights, each flight winner team has a playoff against all other teams, strokes included, until one team wins). Over the past four years, we (my brother and I as team mates) have taken second in the flight (2014); won the rain shortened Tourney (2015); and won our flight but lost in the playoffs both last year and this year. We want to win again next year- so that is a goal! Will soon be heading to Pinehurst for our 21st annual tournament- much luck and some skill involved in winning that, and a February trip to Dominican Republic (Casa de Campo) where again, sometimes luck (we do a blind draw A & B players for a team Calcutta auction each year) is as important as consistent playing, but it is lots of fun! Would like to win at least in one of the two...and own the team who wins the other!!! What's in the bag? tony@CIC
So I haven't reached my overarching goal of breaking 90 - but the year's not over yet. Some of the things I worked on and definitely improved were: Chipping - I practiced this spring in my backyard before the course opened. My goal was to hit 50 chips a day within a small dispersion area. The result is that I'm much more confident - I don't get the yips when I know I'll have to chip. Course strategy: knowing where you want that ball to land was a problem in the past. I'm better at it but still needs work Conquering the driver: this has been the most frustrating part of my game - I have taken numerous lessons but still can't get consistency. When the driver works and it has this year the drives were awesome. However, A lot more work required. Comfortable playing with others in men's league. This is an area where I made big improvements - I'm no longer intimidated by playing with lower handicappers. Goals for next year: Not only break 90 but consistently play in the high 80's Win one of the club tournaments (net basis) - we have several. Over the winter - hit 50 putts a day (indoor putting mat set up in my basement) Winter/spring - as soon as the snow clears hit 50 chips a day. Taking additional driver lessons at an indoor range and potentially get fitted for new driver. PlaidJacket
Like most people we always say we want to play better "this" year. Well, this year I did. Best in many years in fact. So how did I do it? (1) For one I quit chasing a handicap. In fact I don't even bother keeping one anymore. I don't play tournaments anymore either really. Been there done that for more years that I can count. Lot's of fun along the way but I'm through. (2) I quit thinking about my swing and my game. I just let it happen. And it did. Whatever it takes to shoot low scores is my method. Think your way around the course. (3) I don't practice much and when I do it's probably only 30 minutes at a time. (4) Free your mind. Quit grinding on your game. Just let it happen and Free Your Mind. Enjoy your better game next year. L.I. Rich
Love the post, but to answer is a challenge. My scores and HC rose through the spring even as I felt more confident with my swing, then began trending lower as the summer moved to the fall. I took second in our club Stableford last month, and I have become the guy in a match that the other team hates. I've heard that my scorecard looks like it has chickenpox because I get so many strokes. Then I go out and and win a bunch of holes with gross pars and an occasional gross birdie, so collect much more than pay. The reason is that I cannot seem to minimize the blowups. The same round will have three triples and one or two doubles which keeps the HC high. Basically my major malfunctions are in green side bunkers (I tend to make clean contact: Seeya!), and bouts of tee spraying into unplayable fescue. I digress. This season I am happy with having improved my overall driver game as well as my non-bunker wedge play. And in the last month or so, my putting has dramatically improved. My iron play is generally a strength. New goal: break 85 twice in a month. Focus: bunker, wedge, and 3 wood shots. Kenny B
+2. I never took lessons until this year. Tried to do it myself, even used videos of my swing to analyze slo-mo. It didn't help at all. I took two lessons from a "pro" who actually messed me up - and I kept trying what she recommended for 6 weeks before giving up on her. Then I tried another pro and he's made a night and day difference in my swing - and scoring. I can't recommend lessons highly enough, wish I'd started long ago. The trick is finding a good pro, they're not all great. And to have realistic expectations, even the greatest pro probably can't help with one lesson. I'd sign up for about 4, at least two weeks apart, and drill/practice as much as you can in between. Thanks Kenny B and Middler. I think I will start looking for a pro. I did the same as Middler, and it cost me a few years to get half way decent. Think of a pro as a potential employee. They are not all the same, and you have to interview them to find the right one before taking lessons. They are working for you; you are paying them for their services. Find the right fit personality-wise and see if they can instruct in a way that works best for your way of learning. If they don't work out, fire them. “We don’t stop playing the game because we get old; we get old because we stop playing the game.”

yungkory
Luckily, the season never stops here.To contribute to the thread though, I'll chime in on my experience so far this year. As some might know, I stopped playing for about 10 years. Mixed in a few rounds and range sessions here and there, but pretty much quit. After my buddies nagged me to come out for about 2 weeks relentlessly, I gave in and haven't looked back. I tend to be off/on with most of my hobbies, which works for things like surfing because there aren't always waves to be had. I knew when I came back, I had to commit this time. Goal number 1 was to play or practice at least once a week, and aside from the surgery recovery after the dog bit me, I kept it. Goal 1 check. My second goal is to break 80 by the end of the year, something I've never done even when I was playing a lot. My low is 81. I'm trying to dial in my short game because that's where I give the most strokes up. Definitely have a better feel now than I did in April when I started playing again. The ability is there, I just need to string together two solid 9's in a round. The ultimate goal for me isn't performance related though. It's just to have fun and enjoy something that I hadn't even realized I missed so much. Playing now just reminds me of all of the great times I've had with family playing in the past. If there's one piece of advice I could ever give to anyone who golfs, it would be to cherish whoever you play with. My playing partner growing up was always my grandfather, who had a stroke about 4 years ago. He's doing okay, but his balance just isn't where it needs to be to play now that he's nearing 80. If you play regularly with a family member or a friend, keep them close and never take it for granted. For the seasoned spies, take a lot of pictures and videos if you play with your less-experienced-in-life family members. GolfSpy_APH
Awesome thread! Wish I had thought of it. I did reach a lot of my goals for the season. This was my first year really playing consistently and my goal was get my handicap from 18 to 12 and I managed to squeak under to an 11. I also had many other mini goals but manages a 2 over 72 and broke 80 for the first time this year so an amazing season! Only goal I didn't reach was 80 rounds and manages 65 on the season!
