Topping the ball

Recommended Posts

Yesterday I got a weird case of topping the ball.  It freaked me out because I honestly can't remember the last time I did that. I'm thinking maybe I was hitting up too much at the ball. Any suggestions for getting rid of the dreadful tops.

Was it a particular club or all of them?   For me it is usually a ball position issue on my longer clubs when the ball creep back too far back in my stance

I would be very interested as well. That happens a couple times a round.

ok I went back out today for some range work and played nine holes with a friend.  Here's what I found out that worked for me.

1.  You were right with the ball position as once I moved it a bit more up in my stance I was striping the ball nice and high.

2.  I had on some sun glasses yesterday that were two prescriptions old. No doubt this distorted my perception of where the ground was.  Duhhhhhhh

3.  I tried some clip on non prescription sun glasses today and still had some issues.  Once I took them off with the ball in good position.  Boo yah back to solid shots. So no more sun glasses for me. My regular glasses which are no line bifocals have the anti glare so obviously they are enough for my eyes during bright conditions.

I played yesterday with a guy who topped a LOT of shots. It was definitely from trying to hit the ball up with an ascending blow instead of letting the loft do the job. Hit the ball FORWARD, not up and not down, swing level through the ball and let the loft do the work.

Ole gray I now buy my glasses with transition lenses that way I don't have to fool around with clip ons.

I thought about going that route during my last exam but decided not to. I have cataracts and have a hard time seeing in a dark environment.  Especially at night and don't let it rain because I'm really struggling then.

For me it's either ball position or sliding off the ball on the backswing instead of rotating them.

Still happens to me occasionally. My issue is not staying in the shot with my knee flex. I want to stand up straight for some reason and not hit down on the ball. Guess I need to get back to the gym and strengthen my quads up!

I wondering if the transition lens might work for me because regular sun glasses cause weird shots to come off my clubs.

I used to wear transition lens glasses and I had trouble with them late in the day.  Difficult to see clearly in shadows, and when it was cold, the lenses got very dark.  This was 10 years ago; maybe they are better now.  I don't have to wear glasses to play golf so two years ago, I started playing without them.  Glasses were for distance, and now that I am old I don't hit the ball further than I can see.   :(  I bought some Bolle sunglasses with golf lenses that I use for sunny days, but I have to remove them when in shadows.

... Sounds like you fixed your topping problems, but here is my favorite drill for curing topped shots:

With an iron, put a ball about 10" in front of the ball you are hitting. Now with a full swing, hit your ball into the ball 10" in front without letting your ball hop over the ball in front. Drive your ball straight into the ball in front. For some, it will be the first time they take a divot. With a driver, do the same drill but tee up a ball about 15" in front of the ball you are hitting. This changes your focus from trying to elevate your shot to hitting straight the ball and it allows the loft to do it's job.

The darker environment the worst my depth perception is. The anti glare treatment on regular lens are obviously my go to here forth.

edit:  Once I have the cataracts removed they are suppose to put an implant in so I can see very well without glasses.  The doc told me I would then be able to see the balls on a buzzard on the top of a Georgia pine.

    The question is... Will you be able to see the ball at the end of your club?   :D

Hell I hit the ball better when I look an inch in front of it! lol  I strike it better doing that than when I look at the top or back of that sucker... So yea, I don't see a ball when I'm getting ready to pound that sucker like an 18 year old on prom night.

That's all I wear (transition lenses) on the course or on the water. Protects my eyes and keeps me from having to deal with two pairs.

Reading through my thread again after some thin shots the other day.  I'm going to take your tip to the range tomorrow and give it a go.

I fixed my problem by moving the ball way up front and making myself chase down through the ball like this:
