TESTERS WANTED! ×

MGS tests we'd like to see.

I received the following e-mail from MGS this morning:

“MyGolfSpy wants to hear from you. We're looking for some awesome testing ideas for this offseason. Got a product, theory or just about anything golf related you want to see tested in our Lab X test facility? Drop us an email at contact@mygolfspy.com, subject "Lab X Offseason Ideas" and we'll run em by the team.”

What would you like to see tested?  I figure that we could flush out or refine some ideas as a group.

Here is my first idea.  There have been multiple threads on golf forums about putter technology.  The threads start with statements to the effect that of all the clubs, putter technology hasn't changed much over the years and what changes have occurred really don't help lower the scores of average golfers.

The test I would like to see is to test the current leading putters from the most wanted putter test against the best, or best selling putters, from the past.  Test the Evnroll putters against putters like the twoball putter, the bullseye, a Ping putter from the 70s, etc.

Just how much has putter tech improved? Does it lower scores, or should we just give up on tech and go back to the Bullseye?  How many strokes do we gain with newer tech putters verses the  older tech?

I assume the equipment for the test shouldn't be too expensive.  MGS hopefully still has the putters from the most wanted tests and the others should be available for not much money on the used market.

I would like to see the leading putters go against the old bullseye putter or a mini golf putter. Let's see the "best" vs the "worst" to really prove the concept.

Heck yeah! I've drained some pretty crazy mini golf hole-in-ones, let's put one in the bag and see how it performs.

I actually have a buddy that carries two putters with him; one of which is a mini golf putter

Agree, Putter test would be interesting, I have an old TP Mills or Anser2 vs my recent purchase Odyssey OWorks.

I think people on here get caught up in testing individual clubs (particularly their own) when I think there should be focus on larger theories.

Stuff like iron spin off fairways vs off rough with Muscle cavity irons vs irons with larger cavities and stronger lofts.

Hybrid vs fairway wood tests

Utility irons vs hybrids tests

Etc.

Those types of tests could really change how people look to configure their bags

I want to see some good data regarding driver length and height. I play +1/2” irons. So why not in the driver? It's almost impossible to find driver shafts on the plus side at fittings.

How about a testing of steel vs graphite shafts in irons. See what the results of a stiff graphite vs a stiff regular would be.

OR, make it a blind test. Cover the shaft so the tester doesn't know what they're hitting(steel or graphite), but they can still see the results of the shot. Then have them pick what seemed to be the best. Kinda like the old Coke vs Pepsi blind taste test.

I like it! I have graphite shafted irons on my radar. At my age and swing speed it's a done deal however it would be an interesting review.

I like this idea although I suspect it wouldn't be a cut and dried one size fits all solution.

I still would love to see the last five most wanted drivers head to head or one OEMs driver line for the past three release cycles head to head to head.

To me that would be interested my. Certainly there's a big gain over 20 years but what about over the last five or six? Does a release ever take a step back?

It would be fun to know

I thought long and hard and I think I've got a good one:

Test whether players play better using a Rangefinder, GPS, or Morse Code (stepping off yardages from markers and sprinklers).

I'd be willing to bet Morse code wins or comes close to winning. Controlling the variables would be difficult but it's nothing some board room meetings couldn't iron out.

I'd like to see standard off the rack drivers up against the same driver (exact specs) from a demo cart.

I've heard a lot of people say they killed it with a club on a demo day, then struggle with the one they buy

I now use my GPS watch, and am anticipating my Shot Scope 2.0, which will do GPS as well as track my shotmaking and identify areas where I should focus my practice.  But, I still do pace-count (or Morse Code, as STUDque calls it) out of habit - 30 years of pacecount in the military, and 20 playing golf without the technology has made it as much of my game as my grip or swing groove...

I'd like to see a putting test using balls of various hardness to test distance variances. Does a Supersoft ball roll as far as a TP5X? Curious as to how balls with varied numbers of layers react.

My vote:

  • Iron Shaft test (I know they did this a few years ago but would be curious to see a more in-depth test with a standard iron head and 6-8 of the most popular iron shafts in R, S and X flex).
  • Indoor Putting Green Surfaces (So many to choose from but which is the most realistic?)
  • Putter Loft test (which is the best based on stroke and speed of greens)

I'm going to steal this one from Rick Shiels but I think it would be cool if MGS did it...

- test a series of drivers from one manufacturer to see if there really is that much of a difference from driver 6 or 7 years ago to one today.  so, test every head that they have sold in the last 7 years and compare the results between all of them.

In some cases the answer is emphatically yes but in other cases not so much....

But do you actually play better with the GPS added? Does it make that much of a difference if you know the exact distance as opposed to an approximation? If so, how many shots per round does it equate to?

These are the results I'd like to see from a data centric test.

GPS, laser, or stepping off distance?  I imagine I'd come pretty close to the same yardage regardless of method used to determine distance.  Any variation probably wouldn't impact my score.

To me, however, the big difference is how long it takes.  It takes a few seconds to laser a flag.  It takes much longer to find a sprinkler head, step off the distance, check the pin sheet to see how far the pin is on the green, etc.
