ddryan Posted October 24, 2017 Share Posted October 24, 2017 After 20+ years in uniform where a clean shave was required, I began playing with a goatee - Wife did not like it at first, and it gave me a somewhat edgy look (after that long without) but still needed to shave for monthly drill. Since fully retiring from the military I have kept it on, but of course, that 'edgy' look is pretty much passé, as everyone has a goatee- almost a requirement these days. I cant grow a full beard- just doesn't happen- however I know quite a few folks who have the "Homer Simpson" 5 o'clock shadow at 9 in the morning! A non golfing friend of mine can actually grow a beard (think Duck Dynasty type) in about 3 days- heck, it grows faster than the hair on the top of my head (which, albeit grey, is still all there!)... It saves me about 15 minutes every morning and about a pint of blood a year. I do shave my cheeks and neck every few days. I like it fairly close cut, so I also trim it up about once a week. BTW, Frank Nobilo was clean shaven every day at the CJ Cup in Korea. Sometimes when I'm in the mood (or just feeling lazy), I'll let it grow a little longer. I can tell you that conditioner definitely helps for the morning but you'll still itch by the end of the day. To keep the itch away all day, I recommend investing in a beard brush and beard wax. They don't cost much and make a big difference. Last winter, I was able to get my beard pretty long and thick using those tools. I went back to a shorter appearance due to important meetings and summer heat but may give it a go to grow it out for no shave November.
