Adventures in Golf

Recommended Posts

So I was flipping through YouTube and came into a really cool channel. This guy is an average golfer with average ability and does some amazing things I've always wanted to do with this game. Speed golf, hole in one challenge, and golfing in the Himalayas to name a few.

I have no stake in the channel but thought of you all when I saw it. It's different than any lesson or equipment review channel and was, quite honestly, a breath of fresh air in the saturated golf media market.

The channel is called Skratch and the playlist/series is "Adventures in Golf"

Here's one of my favorite videos so far:

Rick, you remember my brother - he hooked you up on that trip to New Jersey- well a few years ago he played in some "Iron Men of Golf" tournament - a 100 hole challenge where you needed to finish 100 holes in a day (yea, one day) and the lowest scores were presented awards- I think he even won a trip to Ireland or something- of course it was all sort of a fundraiser - so it was for a good cause- that must have been some speed golf to get 100 holes in in one day!

That's so many holes. I'd be so tired from running all day. In the speed golf episode, he played 9 holes in 31 minutes and was totally gassed.

Do most people finish or is that a feat in and of itself?

Erik is awesome and his “shows” are very neat. He recently did a challenge in LA after the Euro tour released the “can you get a hole in 1 in 500 shots”, he did he same but spent 1.5 Days trying. Poor guy never did it. Hit a ton of good shots

I was cheering for him the whole time. He tried everything! It was a long video but well worth the watch.

By the end, he was just peppering the flag but couldn't make it drop

I like when he said “the odds of an amateur making a hole in 1 are 1 and 2500 but now realize that isn't 2500 shots. Each shot is 1 and 2500” lol

It's actually held in Stud's backyard every year.  I've never done it.  But they do a couple 54 hole one day tournaments every year.  Myself, MDHacker and a few others play in it every year.  If any of you DMV guys want to join in this year (2018) it'll be a blast.

I just don't see how it's possible to play 10 rounds in a day. That's crazy to me.

I hear ya. The 54 hole one wipes me out each year.

They somehow do it. Obviously it's a very limited group. They have forecaddies that rake the bunkers pull the Pins and drive the cart where it helps.

They honestly have said it's not speed golf. Just a non stop fairly quick pace of play without doing all the little things that take a minute or two.

What amazes me is look at the score. They all shoot decent to good scores while doing so.

This one was fun. I do a version of this at my in laws farm with my dog. Would be great fun to drink and play in any weather. The only thing that drives me nuts is they don't keep score. Even if there's no pars, at least keep track right?

New one today:

The Art of Putting

The "don't shoot" piece was really impactful to me. I would love to see more of this. There's a bar in DC that has mini golf throughout with historical themes.

In case you haven't seen it, our man Erik won the media lottery to play at Augusta the Monday after the Masters. He put together a couple podcasts to document his experience and I highly recommend giving them a listen. I put part 1 on while I chipped and hit during my lunch break and was totally moved by the way he...has a way, with words. Besides the fact that his speech pattern was good for my tempo, the ideas he tackled made me look internal at the person I am.

He spent the first half describing, in intricate detail, the process you go through to learn the logistics of the event all the way down to the texture of the paper the invitation was printed on. The second half was spent discussing ther importance of absorbing the experience associated with playing world class courses and the lasting memories you make. He also talks about family and life journeys.

Couple quick quotes I enjoyed:

"After Tiger had his iconic chip in at the Masters, everybody forgets he followed that up with bogey bogey"

"Life is a race and you only get to run it once. Knowing there's a finish line helps you run faster, or slower depending on what's important. Run fast to the things you want and run slow to the things you want to hold onto"

"The most legendary shots in golf were not made from the fairway"

Oooooo goosebumps. Can't wait to listen to Part 2. He'll be going shot by shot on the experience.

Fellow spies recently while on a business trip I stumbled across a TV show called Adventures is Golf by Skratch TV, the host is Erik Anders Lang, these are on average 10 minute episodes that cover the most obscure golf related topics, here are some of the episode titles from the first and second season

Slum golf in Mumbai

Nude golf

Prison golf

Urban golflandia

Golf outa Compton

Speed golf

Hole in one adventure

The art of putting

The episodes can be viewed on YouTube here are both season 1 and season 2 links, I'm surprised I've never come across this and found it very interesting, for how short the episodes are it's worth checking out.

Love this series! Golf Channel should probably scoop him up to spice up their product!
