Hole after 3rd blow up today. Awesome drive. Pitch to middle of green. Just left birdie short.

Number on my home course is typically a pain in my backside. It seems everything ends up on the right side. Well in a rarity for me, I hit my drive into the fairway down the left side. It left me with 162 yards to the center of the green. My second shot was with my Ping G410 Crossover to the middle of green. Left me with about a 12-foot putt for birdie. "He did not make the putt." I was left with a tap in par. I will take that any day. The course has leaves down everywhere and balls that are easily found in the Summer are not so easy to find in the Fall. Time to switch to inexpensive brightly colored balls for what is left of our golf season in the Northeast.

Shot of the day? Third hole, 334 yard par 4. Green is elevated with a large trap to the left - unlike many of the traps in Mesa this one actually has decent sand-  a pond to the right, going long is horrible and short leaves you at the base of a 15 foot false front that buttresses an oblong green that slopes rather dramatically toward the horrible back and the pond. My second shot ended up on the high side of the green 35 some odd feet from the pin. My putt is an eight foot breaker to the right that is nearly impossible to stop once it gets on the slope. So I send the ball on its way and the slope grabs it where I expect and as expected it picked up speed, then slammed into the center of the stick, bounced to the edge, teetered for a second and dropped in the hole for a 3. Should wind me a skin in today's game.

Had a tap in birdie yesterday on hole 14.  It is the shortest par 4 at just under 300yds.  Hit my 3 wood to about 55yds out and pin was middle green.  Took my 58 degree and hit a nice little shot just past the hole and sucked back a foot to end up less than a foot from the cup.

It is one of the easier holes on the course as long as you don't end up left or behind one of the number of trees that can block your second shot.  You can drive the green with a good shot but with trees right in front and guarded by a bunker, its sometimes smarter to lay up to a good number and hit the large green.

Played a quick 9 holes and it was a ho-hum round with nothing good, nothing terrible happening and before I knew it I was 5 over going into the 9th hole. I was a little disappointed because I was hitting the ball pretty well and keeping it in play so I expected my score to be better.

The 9th is a 540 yd par 5. I hit my drive 284 yds about 1 yd off the fairway left, which was in great position. 2nd shot I hit a 5W into a green side bunker slightly short right, which I was fine with. My 3rd shot out of the sand I caught a hair thin and it ended up rolling off the left side of the green. My 4th shot was a 30 ft chip from just in the rough and I decided to use my 50* to get the ball rolling a bit quicker. Like a perfectly rolled putt, the ball gently tapped the pin, dead center, and dropped for a birdie.

I haven't chipped in for quite some time and it felt great.

My shot of the day was on the par 3 9th that was playing 176yds. My tee shot was a six iron that went pin high to the right of the green and rolled up to the edge of the rough but was still in the short grass. Large green slopes back to front and right to left so I had a bit of a downhill to work with and was 65’ from the pin. Chipped on with my 54° uphill from the hole and it started rolling down and left with good speed. I was hoping for a close proximity and the ball decided to just roll right into the hole for a chip in birdie. 🐦 I was definitely stoked with the shot and gave myself a couple of fist pumps. 😂

Last round of the season yesterday and played the par 4 16th, which is the hardest hole at my home course, to perfection. A good feeling to end things on a good note after numerous round ruining blowouts on this hole this season.

  • Hit a bullet cut with 3W and it followed the right bend in the fairway to perfection. It landed about 10-15 yds further than usual so it tumbled another extra 10-15 yds down the fairway. Right is OB and left is an automatic layup. Long with driver ends up in the water hazard. On great drives, it’s usually impossible to have less than 140 yds left to the center of the green.

IMG_2896.jpeg.9979123100d49f37c64798a7752ed7bd.jpeg

  • Hit a high floating GW over the bunker to the back pin on the slightly elevated green and had an uphill 20’ birdie putt that cozied itself 2" behind the cup for a tap-in par.

A hole I normally play straight ahead with a five wood to about 240 yds carrying a pond and bunker I opted the other day to cut the corner on this dogleg right as my swing and setup are shaping up. I went over the trees to the right teeing it up a tad higher than normal. I ended up carrying the ball about 285 yds. and was left a 148 yd shot to the middle of the green which I hit left of course. But that drive felt sublime. I haven't hit one like that in a long time, heck haven't even tried as I haven't been hitting driver much at all but things are starting to feel really good. Exciting times ahead. What a great game golf is!

Playing short par five with my M/W/F senior men's league last week.    Pulled my a good drive on hole #15, playing senior tees (5400 yds).  Had to hit draw around trees limbs to green with pot bunker on front right..  175 yards to green, hit 21* hybrid and just knew I was in the bunker, but when I got to the green the ball had rolled thru the sand, laying on the upside (*90) in thick grass.  Tough lie, Seth Raynor deep bunker.  Third lie like this today.  Took a chocked T300 48* wedge opened slightly and took full swing, ball flew straight up in air about forty feet towards the hole and landed six feet dead stop.  Made the putt for a birdie.  Other three made their birdies as well but not as dramatic.  Only decent putt I made all day.  Had 41 putts that round and still shot 88.  Hakuna matata.  😃

I have been playing golf for 40+ years and have never had a hole in one or seen a hole in one in person, only on t.v.  I volunteered at the PGA Valspar Tournament and worked on the 197 yard par3 watching the pros hit 7 & 8 irons close, but no hole in ones.  Well last week on a 158 yard par 3 I hit my 8 iron and watched the ball land on the green by the pin and disappear.  My first ever hole in one that I witnessed was my own!

My shot today made the 10th time that I have either chipped or pitched the ball into the hole.  I hit a very nice drive, then a horrible shot short left and into the rough on hole 13 at Whispering Firs GC. I was lucky that one of our players had to play first and I received a good speed read on the green.  I ste myself, imagined the spot I wanted to hit and swung the club from about 30 yards. The ball carried to about 12 feet from the cup, took a short hop and proceeded to roll, roll, and into the cup for a nice birdie.

Yeah me too!

Today I boomed one down the side of the 504 yard par 5 over in the dry hard desert grass left over from this summer - if you miss the scattered trees you can get some huge distance gains - and watched the ball disappear behind a small hill and a couple of trees, but it looked promising. Found the ball on hard packed, concrete like dirt under some tree limbs at 206 yards from the center of the green. I was pretty jazzed. 300 yard drives are 3 shoulder surgeries and a great number of years behind me. Anyway I pull out my Ping G430 #4 hybrid out and aim at the east side of this long kidney shaped green. The west side of the green and the flag was guarded by some fairly tall trees and a nasty greenside bunker. I picked the ball cleanly off the dirt and dropped it inside of 5 feet just short of the green in fairly deep grass. Pulled out my trusty Taylormade Hi-Toe 58 degree wedge and plopped the ball down about 4 feet from the pin. The ball dropped on my first putt for a nice birdie. But, I stroke on that hole so it left me a net eagle which should hold up for the skins game.

Some of the guys curse the heat and well, most of the rest just leave. I love the heat and the bloody hard ground is a huge ego booster! Almost like hitting the ball down the frozen fairways in Central Oregon over the winter only with out the winter part!

Playing at my brother's home course north of Boston called Auld Newbury. 9th hole, uphill par three 208.

Hit 3 wood one of the guys we're playing with said I heard it hit the pin. I'm thinking naa too far away to hear it. Looking for the ball nowhere to be seen. Walked to the hole saw little cut in front of hole sure enough my ball was in there, looked over at my brother and he said it's in there isn't it yup was my reply. Waited till all arrived  to pull it from the cup.

Came to find out it was only the 6th or 7th hole in one that hole since club opened in 1916. He has to see my name on the plaque now.

Started with 100$ set out of PX in White Sands NM 1970..53yrs later Miz 923hm. 1.9 hncp.

18th hole, 505 yards to the pin, par 5.  Not my finest playing up to that point. But it was probably the last time I'll be able to get out this season, so I was hoping to just enjoy the hole. It was cold enough that my hands were half-numb, so when my drive went 250 with a little fade and stopped just left of middle of the fairway, I was happy.

Because of the water to the right and the trees to the left, this is usually a lay up to about 120 out (ten yards short of where the water starts). But it was the last round of the year...so out comes the three wood. I aim at the bunker to the left of the green, thinking I'll probably end up 20-30 yards short of the green in the fairway if all goes well. All went well.

My friend was talking about how he's only had a handful of eagles in his life. That was surprising since he hits the ball a long way and can often reach a par five in two. I decide I'm going to try to chip it in rather than just trying to get near the hole. Chipping is not my strong suit. So I open up the club face a little, put the ball at the back of my stance, keep my weight forward, and try to strike it with little shaft lean. It comes out great, flies about half way to the pin, rolls up the hill breaking gently towards the pin, catches the edge, and rolls two feet past. No eagle, but I'll take a birdie on the last hole of the year every time.

After waiting out a frost delay, and being bundled up in the cold, I started poorly. Through five holes I hadn't hit a single shot I was happy with (five 5s, five over). That turned around on 6. I hit a really good drive, 262 in the fairway when my average is more like 235. It left me about 80, but a little uphill, downwind, with the pin cut far left where the green is only 8 yards deep. Long goes down a hill and runs away, so the miss has to be short. There's a small mound right in front of the green, and I played to hit it with spin, hop over with the wind and hopefully check. If it's short that's okay. My approach hit the mound right where I wanted, but as it went over I couldn't see where it finished until I got up there. Pin high about 18" to the left - that's probably the best, hardest, knockdown wedge shot I've ever hit. It was the first of three birdies out of four, and almost birdied the other one.

Chunked a 7-iron fat, but it hit something that sent it flying at the green. Rolled up to an inch away birdy - HAHA- drove my buddy crazy, but then 10 holes later after I flew a 6-iron to within 3 feet, he skulled a 7-iron that rolled all the way up to inside of my ball…

It was one of the 3 left for birdie every hole challenge and the one I was most worried about getting.

Played Timberline the other day, short par 4, 280 or so. Me and two other guys. First guy gets up there and drives the green. Other buddy says “that’s the best shot I’ve ever seen on this hole” I reply “you watching?” as I tee it up. I then hit it 3-4 feet past my buddy. I then proceed to make a 30 foot eagle putt! 3rd eagle ever!

(Don’t worry, I doubled the next hole to make up for it) 😂😂

Another nice shot! You’ve had some close ones the last few weeks, those irons seem dialed in.
