Played in a league match play event a couple of weeks ago.
It was me (B-flight middle of the pack guy) vs. low-cap A-flight front runner.
We arrive at 17 with me down one playing to stay alive in the match.
A-flight guy pipes one down the middle to about 140. Even the 50 yard tee advantage didn’t help me as I pull hooked a 3-wood off the left side.
An almost exhaustive search located my ball sitting in the rough, halfway down the slope of a shallow ditch, at about 115 yards with a tree and shrubs blocking my direct line to the hole.
Opponent puts his ball on the green, so, this hole played straight up, I’m forced to go for the aggressive shot.
Choke down an inch on the 9 iron, turn it in a bit, play back in the stance, and turn the hands over to get the punch hook around the tree.
Couldn’t have struck it any more pure. Mid flight my opponent yells ‘golf shot!’ from the fairway. As the ball lands on the front right fringe and rolls up onto the green, another in the group says ‘B flighter my arse (he’s from South Africa). Reaching the green I’m just inside 10 feet for my birdie while my opponent has 25 for his.
He misses, I make to go to 18 all square. A push there and a par/net birdie on the first extra hole won me the match.

Had a downhill 7i 152 from the green after piping my drive down the middle (a rarity, I know!) and I put it 10 feet from the flag. Lipped out the birdie putt 🤬

I get a lot of downhill lies in the fairway at my course, and after all these years I still have trouble with them.  Good shot!!

Thanks! That shot helped kick off a string of pars for me.

2 pars in a row can be considered a “string” right???

On the 17th hole today I hit a 317 yard drive that cut the corner on a dogleg and left me 145 in for a par 5. Hit the green but two putted for birdie. Reason it was a highlight is it was my first 300+ drive in a few months. Been working on my swing to hit a controlled fade and it’s awesome to finally see the fruits of my work.

Short par 3, 108 yards slightly uphill to an unguarded front pin. Licking my chops I...shanked it. Ended up about 20 yards right and 10 yards short, with a bunker between me and the pin, and a few pine tree branches dangling just in the wrong spot. No other option than an almost full swing Phil-flop and dropped it right next to the hole! One foot away, just tapped it in with my wedge, feeling like Lefty himself 😎

#6 at my local course. Par 3, typically plays 190 from the blues. Pin is often in the back right, which from the teebox the visual of the green is blocked by a ridge. You can kind of see it in the second picture, which is why I have the measuring line to the left. Anyway, you can see the top 2 feet of the flag sticking up, but it's one of those that you have no idea how good the shot is until you get up there.

Anyway, my playing partner hits a slight push that drifts up towards the right, but looks about the distance. Hard to tell. I decided to try to hit a soft fade with a 4 hybrid that looked right at it to me. We get up there and I must have taken a hard bounce because I am in the rough, slighty long and right, and my partner has a 20 footer for birdie. Would have bet big money from the cart that I was the one on the green. I actually had to go back to the cart to get my wedge. But I hit the 50 degree, toe down, nice putting stroke from a downhill lie. Quite a bit of downhill and right to left movement on the green and it is just tracking beautifully. Rolling perfect, slowing perfect, breaking perfect, until it rests at the edge of the cup, and then pauses for a half second and then plops into the cup. What a feeling! Got to love a 0 putt birdie. Can't what to experience a hole in one one day, or at least holing out on a full shot of some sort.

Par 3, about 160 yards today, but downhill. Hit a smooth 7 iron with the new Srixons. Launched high, stopped dead on the green where it landed, 12 feet from the hole. Made the 12 footer for birdie.

Love the ZX5s so far, but only have played them one round. I had swapped out the JDM 950 GH DST shafts. Those things were some soft shafts. Note, those 950 GH DSTs are not at all the same as the Nippon 950 GH shafts available in the US.  I put in Modus 120s.

As surprising as this sounds, i feel like the ball flight with the Srixons is higher (in a good way) than the Mavrik Max with the Nippon 950 Neos. Theoretically the Mavrik Max irons should be higher launching as a SGI iron with lighter shafts, but I guess the Srixons are still GIs. Also, I love the V-sole on the Srixons, it was smooth through the turf.

I tink the higher swingweight may also be helping me. The Srixons are at D2 (measured by me) whereas my Mavrik Max irons are C9 because they are 0.5 inches short and Callaway did not add any weight to get them back to stock. I get more over the top with lighter clubs (that was validated before during a fitting).

I'm sure the PXGs you were fit in are just as good of a fit for you or better than the Srixons. But I would say the Srixons are great irons and Srixon is really underrated except for the folks in the know.

Hole of the day was hole 12.

  • Pulled it off the tee, bad shot
  • 2nd shot was hitting out from between two trees and also needed to keep it low. Successfully hit a 6 iron
  • 3rd shot was a 6 iron, hit solid, slight fade, landed on the green
  • I didn’t really putt after that, too many large puddles of water on the green that made putting impossible (it was a cold day with heavy rain)

My sons and I played our last round of the year at Boulder Creek in Boulder City, NV on 12/27.

14th hole of the round, #5 on the Desert Hawk 9 - Par 5, 476y

Hit a decent drive down the right, ended up in the hardpan next to the cart path.

Punched an 8 iron back on the the fairway, 95y out.

Hit a SW from 95...looked good in the air...hit the green about 10ft short of the pin and rolled past up a slope.

And started rolling back...closer....maybe....in!

Eagle for Dad!  Capped off the strangest year ever.

I was in great position off the tee with a 7 iron in hand that did not go well on the par 4. I miss-hit the 7i into the trees right of the green. Gap wedge in hand, trying to keep it under the branches from about 20 yards, I was about 25 feet from the pin and just off the green by about 6 feet.

Another person in our group continued to mark his shot by sticking his divot tool vertically in the ground behind his ball. It was right on my line and about 4 feet from the cup. I said, "can you mark it with something flat or finish out?" He replied, in a gripe, "you think you're that good?!? I'll mark it, but you probably won't even come close to my mark or making it!"

I thought to myself, 'I can make this!' I still had my Gap in hand. I setup, make good contact, and the ball is on the way... The second bounce hits his coin, hops again, and goes in for par.

He then proceeded to say, "I'll keep my mouth shut." - the best part 😉 Making par was great. Making a point was even better.

The next tee I hit my longest drive ever (315 yards). Confidence does make a difference.

Had an ok first 18 of year by my standards. Last hole is reason I keep coming back. Hit a solid drive I was trying to draw but it stayed straight. Luckily went through part of the trees. Was cold and into a 20 mph wind so had to hit a low bullet with my 4i to keep it under some branches. Put it back in my stance and swing away. Made it on the green for a chance at an eagle ( I am the white ball). Sadly I three putted but I’ll take pars all day.

My ball striking was very inconsistent yesterday....but I did manage to flush a perfect 6 iron on a 185 yard par 3....perfect high baby draw to about 6 feet....don’t ask about the putt

Cold topped my drive on a par 5 into the high grass next to the white tees.  Hacked it out and advanced it about 150 yards.  Skulled a 6 iron, but it rolled out 200 yards.  Put my 4th about 40 feet from the pin, and sank it for a not-so-routine par.

There is no spoon.

Almost holed a 100 yard wedge shot. Divot mark was 2 inches from the hole. Had a lot of backspin on the ball, it rolled back about 8 feet.

The shot of the day didn't come from me; it came from one of the guys in the first group of the men's gangsome playing behind us.  While I was teeing off on #3, a ball came over the grassy mounds from the #2 hole and hit my wife on her thigh, then hit our cart.  Players from #2 can't see the #3 tee but they know where the tee box is.  No use yelling Fore!!  Can't be heard.  It hurt!  Nice bruise!  We average about 25 balls per year that land less than 10 yards from us, and it's the 5th ball this year... it's only Feb. 7.

SOTD came on #17 at Southern Oaks yesterday. It's a 220-yard Par 3 that was playing just a touch shorter yesterday with a front pin location. I hit my 20* hybrid pure toward the left edge of the green with just a smidge of fade. Landed right in front and trickled on to leave me 3-feet left and above the hole. Only problem is that was the worst place to leave it. Missed the putt by fractions of an inch on the low side and settled for par.

Honorable mention is the birdie bomb I dropped on #12 - another Par 3 listed at 159-yards and playing a bit closer to 165 yesterday. After getting a lucky break with the tee shot, I found myself on the front of the green about 40-feet away from the hole. Though I got the ball started on the right line, contact was not good and I honestly thought it was going to stop well short of the hole, but perhaps this is where that EVNROLL-inspired putter face tech actually made a difference. I watched as the ball continued to roll well beyond where I though it should have and trickled its way right over the front edge. Couldn't believe it! If not for my perfectionist nature, I would have easily listed this as my SOTD.

SOTD was what could have made a great par save. Ball just left of a tree 130 out back pin. 3/4 8i cut to 8ft. Sadly missed the par putt but learned I can hit a nice knock down 8. Had to do similar on the next hole and avoid a tree which I did. Somehow I actually carried to long. Had the birdie and par puts both lip out (birdie was 45ft downhill). 0A6E38E8-F07F-453C-9843-40BC1E641EBC.png.0daa4da6976c06e58dd5d9109ef9cf70.png44B601EB-79E3-415C-A461-4964E7553D4E.jpeg.b7512425f2e254dddb694c16082d8d18.jpeg

Was scrambling with a few buddies for the first round of the year on Saturday. We came into 18 at even par, and on the 420 yard par 4 the three of us all had poor tee shots. 2 OB, and the only remaining shot left us with 260 in to the green. With water all along the right side of the fairway, we ended up sitting 2 about 90 yards from the green, needing to get up and down to stay even par for the round. First partner pulled it left into a bunker, next partner pushed his right into another bunker.

I knocked a 54 down to about 10', shot of the day no doubt! And we knocked down the putt to save as well 🙂
