Heard Hank Haney this morning say that the Albany Golf Club is a birdie fest course; big wide fairways, no real trouble, and pure greens.  He said that if someone shoots 69, it's like one over par, and that person will likely be in last place.  

 

My feeling is that Tiger will play OK tee to green, but his place in the 18-man field will be how well he does around the greens.  He won't finish last though.

Not disputing your case, but how people get interviewed about Fred Couples when he hosts a tourney? Just for argument's sake, here's your five:

 

-Kuchar

-Stenson

-Molinari

-Rose

-Hoffman

 

 

And probably Matsuyama. So that's 6 quick ones. I'd be willing to bet at least some of those young guns still would've come around without Tiger's influence but that can debated until we're all blue in the face.

The "Tiger show" has been going on all week, 24/7 on the Golf Channel.  I'll believe Tiger is back after he makes the cut 2 or 3 times in a row without injury.  I've seen the current circus too many times to be optimistic.  He's good for interest in golf, I hope he can be competitive, but I'll wait and see before I get any hopes up.

Perhaps, it could best be said :  "Tiger's Back is Back."    I have heard it stated, that after four procedures, Tiger finally received the required procedure, a fusion.  Currently, at least, he seems to be pain free.   So why wasn't this procedure performed previously.

I wondered that also and all I can think of the doctor he was using didn't want to go that far but he did switch doctors so that may have something to do with it.

From everything I've ever read, even the "easiest" back surgery can be risky and should be a last resort.  I'd bet they tried every other option before they decided to do the surgery.

A little more info on the Pro Am. The "buy in" was $75K. They played with Ricky and said he was very cool and a nice guy. They came in first with a -13 on the front and a -8 or -9 on the back. Uncle Kenny shot 78 or 79 with a 9 HDCP, so he played well. Of course he didn't get off to a good start and said "OK boys, I'm sorry, but I need a double double Jack". Once he got that into him he played well.

Tiger's hitting great drives and fairways shots.  His short shots around the green... not so much.  By my count 0-4.  Two chunk chips, poor bunker shot, and poor putt from off the green.  Just off the green in two shots on a par 5 and gets a bogey.

Love or hate him, he's been good for the game. When he was dialed in there was nothing else like it. I hope he gets back to form and competes again. So far it's looking good.

I tend to agree with you.   As a commentator I heard suggested, we may be watching the arrival of a new Tiger.   During his heyday, Tiger was totally focused, he never smiled much and he didn't interact much with his competitors.  When he went to the range prior to a round, he went straight to hitting balls.   Now he is smiling, he is interacting with the young bucks.   Young bucks that he had a hand in creating, when he converted golf from a game to a sport.   He sees their camaraderie while at the same time having the desire to beat each other.  While Tiger definitely wants to beat the young bucks, I think he will settle nicely into the mentor role because during his non-playing role at the Ryder and President Cups, he likes and respects them.  He sees them as the future of the game in which he had a prominent role of creating.

I think a lot of that comes from his role as Assistant Captain the past two years on the Presidents and Ryder Cup teams.   He really seemed more relaxed and one of the guys there, as opposed to when he was playing in it and he was a complete loaner.

 

John Feinstein touches on this a lot in his current book The First Major: The Story of the 2016 Ryder Cup.
