Doesn't even look like the same barrel, great job! That's professional quality work.

Note that I didn't include any close ups of the paint job😉 Spray painting definitely isn't one my strengths.

Ah yes daughters  - They're precious at this age. Don't ask me about what they're like when they become teenagers.

Really happy with how how it looks, and hoping it cooks as good as it looks.

Holy sh*t that looks awesome!

are you following a guide or anything like that?  Do you have to treat the inside of the barrel or anything like that?

Today was getting back into the basement and doing final touches after a year hiatus. Once it became livable I stopped. Was a lot doing it myself.

today did the basement stairs drop ceiling (not actually suspended just glued in place. Next will just be finishing trims. Last will be the windows (same as stairs need to glue ceiling grid in so it has a finished look).46E4AC17-2742-444A-B26E-D56E08AB74B2.thumb.jpeg.25cf34a899b725c70f7ad19b2f1e4db1.jpeg

I'm on Smoker Builder forum, their YouTube how to videos are great. I got some plans with where to put everything from them.

The yellow painted on liner came out reasonably easily, burnt out the drum and then scrubbed of the residue with a nylon scrubbing brush and powder cleaner. I had to get the flap disc out for a couple of patches that the fire didn't get first. My first UDS had a red liner that was impossible to get out.

Once I'm finished putting it together I'll season it by wiping the interior with cooking oil and running it reasonably hot for a couple of hours. It works the same as seasoning a wok or cast iron pan.

@Peaksy68 keep us updated on how your temp control goes. From what I've seen on the BBQ forum I'm a member of, the risers for the intakes aren't as effective as having them just come out 90°. Looks good mate. I like what you did for your exhaust. I used a Weber lid with two daisy wheels in it.

I was having temp control problems with the old UDS. It has horizontal intakes, but smaller diameter. I'm hoping the vertical intakes will hope reduce the impact of the swirling and strong wind I get here. I get it adjusted then the wind changes to blow straight in, or stops blowing. It's fine on calm days, but we get 2 of those a year!

Intakes are 1.5 inch, exhaust is 2 inch.

I'm installing a heat shield and block off plate which should help with efficiency and control as well.

This bedroom had a drop ceiling and wood panels on the wall when I purchased it. I can't find any insulation behind the walls and there is no closet so I'm going to fix both things and do the whole thing over completely especially since the houses wiring needs help I'm going to tackle this room then combine two small ones into a nice big room.

SuperSpeed protocol had to take a day off yesterday. My son asked me to help him redo plumbing and tile work. While he set the tile, I did the cutting with the 'wet' tile saw. Hot, humid 11 hour day, not counting the hour and a half drive time each way. I was beat!

We didn't quite finish the tile work - but enough that he could do the rest. Pic of the back wall  - notice all of my fine tile cuts 😎

Thanks - he also learned a few new plumbing tricks I taught him. I love Pex and Shark fittings!

Edit: The bathroom is on the second floor and the tile saw was outside on ground level. My thighs are killing me from all of the up and downs for the individual cuts. It was worse than being on a 'stairmaster'

SuperSpeed protocol had to take a day off yesterday. My son asked me to help him redo plumbing and tile work. While he set the tile, I did the cutting with the 'wet' tile saw. Hot, humid 11 hour day, not counting the hour and a half drive time each way. I was beat!

Any plumbing I have to do these days is either pex or shark bites. Got a new washer did 2 shark bite fittings to a single handle h/c valve. So easy. No more flux for this guy!

  • 4 weeks later...

Demoed a room today and my parents came to help. The person who remodeled years ago put dry wall over these beautiful planks. No insulation behind them and no closets. I'm turning an office and bedroom into a master suite and putting a closet in the other room. The room where I will be adding the closet is the room in the picture below. The boards on all 4 sides will be trimmed up and used as trim, a coffee table, and other things I see desired to make out of old boards from I'm thinking the 1920s or earlier.

A couple runs through a planer and or a rough sand with an orbital and you’ll get a ton of mileage out of those boards. Nice treasure find right there Tom.

I’m sure your electric bill will thank you as well when you’re done with that room.

My oil usage should go down too. I have a feeling my lower level is the same way. This year two rooms on the second and next year the other two. I'm planning on having it my own style and way in 5 years. There are a few that are split so I can even do a live edge piece of I want and I have a nice plan for a coffee table for my living room from one. I want a coffee table with a cigar humidor built into one side and something nice in the other side, you know for home protection.
