I like this idea I just need to cover piping that is going in my closet so why waste the metal if I can build it and paint it to match my wall and not have to worry about it. I never thought of this thanks jMike

Welcome. I didn’t either until YouTube. I saw a video on it and said well I can build these at a fraction of the cost. Took about three hours and was pretty much all straight cuts with the miter saw and table saw.

Day one done. Set and leveled the base cabinets. Painted the fireplace and installed perimeter base and quarter round shoe.

Tomorrow we build the cabinet tops and upper shelves.

Got all the drywall in my one room done except for the closet. Going to finish that tomorrow we installed the closet door today so I can finish this easily before my dad shows up and we start to run the baseboards for my heating. Will post pictures once the room is done.

Cabinet tops are wrapping up. We use 3/4” 4’x8’oak veneer, attach it to a base of 3/4” pressboard which was just some leftover material. It gives us the taller and beefier top without the extra cost. Once that’s glued and nailed, we put an edge band around the face and let that bond

Thank you. My father has had a wood shop as a side gig for 45 years. As I’ve grown, it’s been a gift to learn from him.  I don’t have any pictures but it’s pretty much everything we’d need to built cabinets, counters and furniture.

It's the year of the water heater....this one at the church parsonage is the third one I've replaced this year.  I'm getting more efficient though, 1.5 last evening hours included replacing a couple sketchy sections of pipe and I didn't even need a second trip to the hardware store to get another fitting I forgot the first time!  And no pipe drips when I was done!

It is the best apprenticeship you will ever have. My Dad passed about 7 years ago and I spent my early life working with him learning the trades, mostly plumbing but framing and basic carpentry as well. Can’t tell you how many thousands of dollars that has saved me over the years.

I used shark bites to get from the existing copper to CPVC in the replacement sections of pipe and I did have to solder where I re-used a 1/4 turn valve in a different spot.  I used the threaded SS braided supply lines to go from the tank because of course the fittings on the new tank don't line up and are a different height than the old tank.

One of the hinges on the door between washer/dryer room & garage pulled out of the wall. The door is a solid wood. The 4 screws were 3/8” long, barely holding in the wood frame. Luckily I keep all “leftover stuff” from over the years and redid the flat head wood screws w 4 decent length replacement.
House is only 6 years old should be better than that.

My basement has a French drain and over the last year started taking on water again. Started the drain cleaning and repairs today and can’t figure out why they would install it without clean outs??? Took me two hours to install the first clean out and about an hour to flush half of it. Also discovered that one of the pipes going into the sump well is pitched up half an inch or so. That is a project for tomorrow.

Tom,

Remember when it comes to mudding - as we would call it in the Midwest, less is more. Also check into power drywall sanders that have a vacuum attachment. Both tool rental stores along with Home Depot have them.

Already did the rental place two miles from me has one at a good cheap rental price. Same place I rented the drywall lift from. Thanks for the mention my dad is on top of me with that stuff.

Installed four clean outs in the French drain and flushed it with a hose. Rained all day today and so far no water in the basement...yet. Also fixed some pitch issues with the sump wells that I assume came with settling over time. The hydro jet attachment came last night so will be giving them a good cleaning tomorrow.

Cabinet tops are stained and set.  Currently building the cabinet upper shelves as this project moves forward.  I hope to have them installed tomorrow and then we'll get the trim squared away.  Yesterday we finished installing two new light fixtures and painted the room.

Here’s some free advice for everyone. Don’t throw baby wipes down the toilet.  I’d like to thank the extra scoop I added to the four cups of my Tim Horton’s coffee this morning.

So it was a detour. Here’s the crown above the shelves we just finished yesterday. The second photo is the rented snake doing its thing. It ended up being a good bit of preventative maintenance as well.

Looking good - well not the drain. That sounds like a messy and unpleasant job.
