Looking good - well not the drain. That sounds like a messy and unpleasant job.

We rented “the negotiator” (a 100’ powered industrial snake) which saved us about $400. It wasn’t a terrible job and I look at it this way...next time it happens I’ll be even better prepared.

My wife and I have been in our house for 22 years and haven't been a fan of our fireplace for almost that long. We had some painting done and had the fireplace wall painted as a "feature wall" and really made us decide our fireplace was gross. Demo started shortly after the paint dried. Almost done, just waiting on some tile samples for the hearth but very happy with how it's looking. I also ran a couple electric lines to hide all the cords behind the TV.

Any tips on cutting PVC wainscoating with a hand saw?  I do very little home improvement, but I'm doing a small project where I'm trimming out some Ikea bookshelves to make them look like built-ins.  I don't really have a need for a circular saw or a jigsaw.  I actually have a circular saw that I got out of my grandfather's garage.  It's sat unused for 20 years and will not work now.  I just need to cut off a foot or so from two 7" wide pieces of the wainscoating to cover gaps between the shelves, so I hate to invest in a power tool for it.

You can rent tools from Home Depot .. if that’s an option in your area

Thanks, I definitely thought about that, but with my job and the fact that when I'm off and there's daylight, I'm trying to play golf, I tend to do my home improvement stuff late at night.  I didn't want to rent a tool for a day just to use it for 15 minutes.

For the record, the hand saw worked fine; I just touched it up with a little fine-grit sandpaper afterward to smooth it out.

Nice job...what did you use for the countertop and shelves?

The counter tops are butcher board that I bought at Lowe’s then stained. I cut it to fit the cabinet in the dry bar then ripped down the middle to go on top of the cabinets I put next to the fireplace surround.

The shelves are floating shelves that I built using 1x10’s and 1x3’s. I built a box and then screwed a 2x3 to the wall and slip the box over it...I built the fireplace mantle the same way.

Final piece for the living room touch-up is the mantle.  Material came from a tear-out and after some planing and a rough sand it's gluing up and getting ready to be hung above the fireplace.

Have any of you guys used any of the online photo services for framed large format photo prints?  Now that the bookshelves are finished and the books are migrating to it, the walls are looking pretty bare.

I'd love to get a Samsung Frame TV, but it's an awfully big spend for something that'd just be a glorified digital picture frame.

My improvement is an indoor golf ball driving net in my living room.

it has to go up and down every couple days. Because it doesn’t improve the ambiance of the room when guests come Over.

It would be neat to make it retractable like a movie screen.

Costco does prints on glass, canvas & metal that I have seen come out very nice.

Thanks for the recommendations.  A friend not on this forum recommended FrameItEasy, and they did a phenomenal job for a really reasonable price.

Frustrating problem: I laid large (18"X18") on our enclosed Lani using premixed thinset and the tiles are still not set after a couple of weeks 😡. I assume it's because of the amount of thinset (the concrete had a lot of dips) and the outside temp in the evenings. I'll never use premix for outside use again.

Hopefully I'll be able to grout this weekend and upload some pics.

Hey guys, got a question for the brain trust - buddy gave me some old cabinets that I am hoping to put into my basement workshop. It's all hallow cinder block walls down there, so what type of anchor should I use to hang the uppers?

Looking at tapcon, toggle bolts, concrete anchors...gets confusing! They will need to hold a decent amount for tools, batteries, clamps, solvents, screws, etc... Wouldn't think any single cabinet would hold more than 200lbs, though.

Also been thinking about a french cleat system to make hanging them much easier, or even putting up a rough framing wall in front of the cinder blocks and hanging the cabinets into the wall studs.

Welcome your thoughts as I finally build out the new shop!

I prefer using powder actuated nail gun “Ramset”. They make charges for all different concrete including block. Or tapcon works too just a little more tedious. Will cost a little more if you have to by the gun.

Made finishing my basement super easy (if you do get the trigger one not the hammer one)
