Hey guys, got a question for the brain trust - buddy gave me some old cabinets that I am hoping to put into my basement workshop. It's all hallow cinder block walls down there, so what type of anchor should I use to hang the uppers?

Looking at tapcon, toggle bolts, concrete anchors...gets confusing! They will need to hold a decent amount for tools, batteries, clamps, solvents, screws, etc... Wouldn't think any single cabinet would hold more than 200lbs, though.

Also been thinking about a french cleat system to make hanging them much easier, or even putting up a rough framing wall in front of the cinder blocks and hanging the cabinets into the wall studs.

Welcome your thoughts as I finally build out the new shop!

I use Tapcons to put up shelves in my basement onto concrete block. Just get the right size and it should be fine.

Tapcons would work well. I would definitely use cleats, they will make the mounting of the cabinets a lot easier.  If you're looking for a safety margin you can use Liquid Nails or another construction adhesive on the back of the cleat before you tapcon it to the wall.

Appreciate the insights guys! I think I'll pass on the ramset since I don't have a the gun and it would get pricey to hang just a few cabinets.

Might use the tapcon to install 2x4 french cleats and get them nice and level, then hang the shelves - that way I could always change/remove them down the road if I need to.

Just curious why you're using 2 X 4 vs. 1 X? The 1X would allow for more of a flush fit against the wall. The 2X will create a big gap on the sides of the cabinet.

Excellent question! Because I already have plenty of 2x4's lol 🤣

Although, to your point, I could rip them in half on the table saw and get them more flush to the wall. Perhaps I'll go that route!

All depends on the look. 1.75" (from 2X) gap would be pretty big on the sides.

Totally agree. Although I started thinking about what I would do with that gap and thought about adding some lighting at top and bottom to create an interesting glow/ambient lighting effect in the shop...since it's in the basement I need all the light I can get, haha!

Ended up using Tapcons per the HD hardware specialist rec. However, to add some extra grip, I also laid a bead of liquid nail on each wall cleat and cabinet cleat.

Install was easy having ripped the 2x4's, then ripped them length wise at a 45 for the french cleat. Hung the wall cleat level after predrilling the Tapcons, screwed in the cabinet cleat and added a spacer at the bottom and hung them as easily as hanging a coat on the rack. PXL_20210130_202044274.jpg

Tapcons should do the job, just make sure to drill pilot holes “one size smaller” than the tapcon so it has something to grab on to

Thanks! just out of frame to the right of the picture is actually a huge, built in wood shelving unit the previous owner constructed and then nailed into the mortar. Spent last night demolishing the top portion and separating it from the bottom. Believe I'll try and salvage the bottom for a nice workbench and maybe a portion of the top as the shelves are nice and the price of wood is outrageous right now, lol!

The rest of the shop is an utter disaster while I reorganize everything and get it back into the new cabinets. Funny enough, not 30mins after I installed the ones in the picture above the person who gave me those texted me again asking if I wanted more, haha! So looks like I'll have 3 more uppers to install on the right side wall maybe this weekend 🙂

Here's a couple of what we've been up to.  Living room is now complete and since we had the momentum, we redid the pantry.  Biscuit joined the shelves with some finished oak fronts to give it a solid wood appearance.  Now we just have do decide whether to keep the doors off or replace them.

  • 3 weeks later...

we sold our house, and i’m getting it ready for the new owners to take over. your standard patching nail holes, touch up paint, etc.

today’s project was a real PITA...

we have a LOT of houseplants. when we moved in, my wife wanted to put a bunch of the smaller ones in this front bay window. she put down these adhesive cork squares to protect the wood from water and dirt spills...

after two years, those things were basically cemented to the windowsill

Does anyone else picks up furniture from the garbage and fix it up?

I got a little side project, fixing up and old rocking chair.

Sand, fill up the holes and re stain it.

Here's a couple of what we've been up to.  Living room is now complete and since we had the momentum, we redid the pantry.  Biscuit joined the shelves with some finished oak fronts to give it a solid wood appearance.  Now we just have do decide whether to keep the doors off or replace them.

Those built-ins are beautiful!  Great work! And I love that mantle.

About a month ago the sliding door on our Honda Odyssey stopped working and one of the cables that runs to the motor snapped, causing the motor to Jam.  We could only open that door about 6 inches.  Finally got the replacement cables in and took the panels off today to see what was going on.

The dealer quoted us over $400 if it was JUST the cable that snapped.  $1200 is the motor was shot.  I got the cables for $9.99.

Got about half way through (removed the old cables, but the spindle is jammed on pretty good.  I’ll wait until its a little warmer to pull the motor off and get the spindle loose.  Otherwise it looks fine.  At least now we have a working door and can take the kids in it again, even if we have to go old school and manually open it!

What kills me is the fact that the deal is charging $400+ for this when it requires:

1. A screw driver

2. A 10mm socket wrench

3. Two human hands

4. Probably an hour of experienced time.

That's crazy! I'm glad to hear you're able to get the door to open now, even if it's manually.

Does anyone else picks up furniture from the garbage and fix it up?
I got a little side project, fixing up and old rocking chair.
Sand, fill up the holes and re stain it.

Short answer yes but that decades ago. It’s a great winter hobby and you’re recycling at same time.

My project for the weekend and this week is to repair some drywall seams and corners in the one hallway.  It's been about 20 yeas since we built that addition and settling plus temp changes in the attic moved the ceiling joists enough to cause a few cracks.  "Our" plan is to repaint that hallway so the mudwork needs to get done ahead of that.  It's been a while since I have done mudding and I am definitely out of practice.

Unreal how much some places want to charge for replacement parts. I had a local chain tire store quote me $360 to replace the front pads and rotors on my car. The line-item quote showed they wanted $115 just for the set of pads! Instead, I got a brand new set of ceramic pads and drilled/slotted coated rotors delivered for $110 total and did it myself.

My wife laments that I drive an older car (it's going on 17 years old this year), but the parts are cheap and it's relatively easy to work on. Easy savings if you can get a few standard tools and a warm-ish place to work.
