Don’t want to get you upset but be careful of Bears.  Our neice & her husband have 30 acres in East Granby. Ct and a large chicken coop.  2bears got into the coop and as you can imagine made a mess.  They have cameras all over their property and caught them on camera.  East Granby not that close to you.

we have bears by us but they're extremely rare and they're usually way more interested in people's trash than live chickens.

foxes, coyotes, and raccoons are the big concerns.  that's why i dug a 3ft deep trench when we started building the coop and buried hardware cloth, attached it to the bottom boards around the run, then backfilled.  anything that wants to get in will have to dig down more than 3 feet, and then back up.

I did my own install and used these.  They basically glue into the underside of the granite and then the tabs from the dishwasher screws in to the brackets...held up pretty well but then the dang dishwasher heating element broke after a few years so I had to break the glue bond to the granite. Had to buy new brackets.

Getting a quote for our deck to be redone sometime next year (hopefully lumber prices drop more by then), any suggestions for those who had a contractor or did it themselves? We are leaning toward doing composite since we will likely be there long term but interested if others have any previous experience!

I don't think the prices are going down any further because from my looking at lumber for a project, they're where they were before the incredible price hike.

If I were building a deck, I'd be going with composite for the deck and treated for the posts and joists.

That's good to hear that they are comparable to before, we are likely going to just replace the deck base boards and railing as that is whats weathered, the posts and joists are treated and still in good condition (we will have the contractor take a look though). Previous owners didn't stain the deck for a number of years and then when it started to weather, just kept slapping layer after layer of paint stain on as a band aid.

I'll second the composite. Be forewarned not all composite is the same so do a bit of research. At our last house we had the combo that @MattFrecommends above. Treated on the posts and  joists, then Azek for the decking. We also had plastic sleeves for the posts and rails (maybe timbertek? ) . We also went with a light gray decking with the wood grain showing. If I had to do it again, I would have used a darker color. The light gray shows dirt faster - but easily powerwashes off - just a bit more work if you're OCD like me.

i'm doing my first backsplash install next week.  it seems straightforward enough, and the hardware store local to me is excellent, so i know i'll be able to go in there and get everything i need in one shot.

but i figured i'd ask here for any tips and tricks that might save me some time and money.  i'm using a mosaic ceramic tile.  will i be able to cut this using a cut off wheel and diamond blade? or do i absolutely need a wet saw?

thanks in advance and i'll be sure to post some pictures when i'm done...for better or worse.

Rent a wet saw if you're a perfectionist. Other than that, it's a piece of piss.

Just had a contractor come over and take some measurements for the decking quote, also had them take a look at the unfinished part of our basement that has the electrical, plumbing and studded for an extra bedroom, bathroom and closet. It would be pretty basic with a tub/shower, toilet, small vanity, laminate tile and the bedroom would just be sheet rocked, carpeted and add a closet.

Composite decking they offer is TimberTech or another, slightly cheaper brand through Home Depot. Said that composite would be ~2.5x that of treated cedar. Will get the quote back for both in a couple weeks as they are pretty backed up and the project would happen in the spring or summer 2022. They do quality work as they did a neighbors deck (cedar) and another neighbors kitchen.

Interested to see what their cost estimates will be on both. We are leaving the treated posts and joists, they are still in good condition- just deck boards and aluminum railings. Does anyone have experience with TimberTech or Home Depot composite decking, weighing how much I'm willing to pay to not have to worry about staining every year or two.

I prefer wood over the composite stuff, but that being said I also do not enjoy the maintenance of taking care of the wood deck at my cabin or my primary home -- sand, stain, rinse, repeat.  I spec composite all the time for my Architecture clients and I mostly do it because of it's plug and play nature.  Installed properly (this is the key), you basically don't have to touch the stuff again (ever)  -- which I've heard even in places with actual winters.   Installed poorly they can oil can and get wavy.   Timber tech had qa/qc problems when they first entered the market 2008ish but we're more than a decade past those initial problems.  I always spec Trex, but clients often sub Timbertech and I haven't heard any complaints.  They're effectively interchangeable with Trex.    The only thing I'd keep in mind is that in a lot of direct sunlight the composite can get very very hot.

We had Azek composite installed. Literally maintenance free over 10 years that we owned the house. A powerwash occasionally was all it required (note: it was light gray color so it showed dirt a bit more), otherwise no maintenance at all, However, as you mentioned it does get a bit toasty underfoot if you have all day exposure to the sun. If I had to install a new deck I'd definitely pop for the extra dollars of composite.

Also we had timber tech sleeves that fit over the  4X4 posts and timber tech railings. Both performed exceptionally well.

Thanks for the response! We are going forward with composite, just a matter of picking brand. Does anyone have experience with Fiberon? We have the option of that or Timbertech. Thankfully we have a tree next to the deck and is only in direct sunlight for a few hours a day during the summers so it shouldn't cook! Contractor did some work for our neighbor and comes highly recommended, wanted to make sure its done right haha

I'll build it, someone else can finish it...

Can't wait for the crap weather to be over. I have a "big" project for the back patio. I wanted to build a pergola over it, about 16' x 18' but the Minister put the kybosh on that, so I'll be building an 8' x 14' BBQ shelter for my smoker and grills.

I hate the sanding part as well. Learned a long time ago that a little in multiple layers is better. Note you can also rent a power drywall sander with a vac attachment. It'll keep the dust down.

Getting everything lined up to redo our kitchen at the Florida Condo. The current kitchen is completely done in 1990's laminate including the countertops in the same color. Who does that?????

Cabinets ordered and my buddy and I are set to start in a couple of weeks.

Before pics - stay tuned for after pics.

I got things smooth enough that I haven’t had to sand between coats which is nice
