Anybody recognize these Titleist balls?

So I received an interesting gift from one of the kids at school - very thoughtful because they obviously know that I love golf. Does anybody recognize this model of Titleist golf balls? Dozen balls, still in shrink wrap, should I put them in play? Do they lose their pop over time? Last thing I want to do is damage driver as weather gets colder.

Those balls need to be around a decade old.

Pretty sure they were sold at Costco at one point. 2 piece surlyn covered ball. I've never played them so I can't tell you how the play.

I remember them and like jlukes said at least 10 years old. I don't even remember if I liked them.

Can't answer whether you should play them or not but assuming they haven't had anything happen to them, they should play fine. They shouldn't damage your clubs if that's what you are worried about. Also, they shouldn't lose their pop or anything. They should play as they would've 10 years ago. They may be a little shorter than current balls but not by all that much. I personally think it would be cool to see the difference in them and a ball from today.

As others have said, at least 10 years old.  They are probably fine to play, I read an article on some blog a few years back that balls never really lose their "play-ability" unless they have been in extreme conditions for years on end, like at the bottom of a pond or in the trunk of a car in constant 100 plus temps for months on end. 

 

At least your students have better taste than some of my old co-workers.  About 5 years ago I was the GM of a hotel, and most of my staff knew of my golf obsession.  So for Christmas one year one of my staff members got me a "Bag-o-Balls" you know that red mesh type bag that is filled with 40 range ball quality balls.   I of course accepted them graciously, and over time i used them little by little on the range or hitting off the tee of a hole next to a lake or ocean if I just wanted to hit a waste ball into the water.

I've certainly received some of those type gifts in the past- easier to respond with grace when it comes from a child. Yes, I think I'll give them a try and compare to modern 2-piece distance balls.

Yea that's a solid core ball so as long as they were kept in reasonable temperatures they'll be fine.

So I started with comparison testing today : HVC-L ball vs Velocity ball vs DT Carry ball. Began with the flat stick to determine feel and then hit some chip shots in the yard.

 

This may not matter to most people but the HVC-L ball does not have a pronounced alignment aid like the newer models. The DT Carry was my least favorite in feel, felt like a rock. The dimple pattern was different on the HVC-L and I wasn't rolling it quite as well as the Velocity. Winner on putting feel: Velocity

 

Hit several chip shots with a gap wedge and once again the DT Carry was my least favorite. The Velocity had a nice click in terms of sound /feel at contact. The HVC-L seemed best at spin and checking up.

Winner on chip shots: Velocity

 

Hope to get out to play a round in the next week or so.

So I put these HVC-L balls into play today during my round and they honestly performed about as expected. They showed no ill effects of their long shelf life but they also didn't wow me with their performance in terms of feel or spin. Since I was playing with my son (age 14) and my father-in-law (age 70+), I thought I'd get them in on the act so I gave them a sleeve.  Pops even read the description on the sleeve of balls and said "This sounds perfect for me!"  This was a new course to all of us and wouldn't you know, we all found the water on the par 5 first hole! Good thing I had an entire dozen.  The ball did not have excess spin off the driver and distance was equal to other balls in its class.  The spin on well struck iron shots was lacking- had longer putts on a few holes because it would roll out 10-12 feet at times.  The feedback from short game shots was not as good as newer models either and I had chip, pitch, and sand shots all in the first 5 holes. I don't think I hit a GIR until 6th hole.  My son and I both prefer a urethane, multi-layer ball so I doubt I'll be putting these into play again soon except on water holes.  Pops plays a 2-piece distance ball all the time and he said he couldn't tell any difference, good or bad, so he might just get the remaining sleeves.

I remember those balls....had a buddy that use to swear by em....course he lost a half dozen a round so I'm sure he was swearing by the price not the results lol
