How far do you hit your 7 iron

Sluggo42

Recommended Posts

The requisite short hitter here  ^_^

The way a fitter asked me once, it you had only a 7 iron to hit to a green, that had to carry water, how far of carry over that water would you be comfortable you'd carry 8/10 times.  Thinking of it in those terms I said, 135.  But if if I hit it really solid I'll get 150 out of it.

That's with both my JPX Hot Metal with the C-Taper Lite 110 shaft.  I haven't enough time with the 718 7 irons to determine, but I'm  pretty sure the AP1 7 iron would be very close to the same distance. and the AP2 7 iron about 5 yards or so shorter.

I can swing hard at any wedge with any modern ball and balloon it now. Had to show Bear the other day and this is sorta embarrassing. I only hit a 50* wedge about 105 or so (used to hit a 56 like that) Had a shot that required a 115 carry. Bear said aw hell you can stretch it some. I told him naah I cant. We were just messing around anyhow . I showed him with the 50* Cally BECU. I ballooned it high as a Philly Mick flop shot with a 64* only went 75 yards or so and I did not hit it fat. Took my PW and hit a little check up skipper with it. Now that little balloon shot can serve to my advantage. If I had been 85 or so yards out I would have hit the same shot with that 50 if I needed to stop it super quick or I could have taken the PM 56 and toe hit it a bit and stop it. All of this comes from screwing with wedges and practicing my short game a lot. I have always honed and practiced my short game most of my life. I also think there is some trickery involved with that PM wedge that I found by accident. I can hit the prettiest one hopper forward and spin back with it than I ever could with any other wedge including my beloved 588s. I found that little tidbit of a shot by accident dialing that wedge in. So I have been practicing it quite a bit. Saved my bacon Sunday afternoon because I did not have a good ball striking day as far as GIR with my irons.  Which in the past was SOP "Stu Golf".  Wedge and putter saved my bacon again

... Ain't the new balls just awesome? Low spin off the driver where most want side/backspin to be at a minimum but spins like crazy with a wedge. I found a Velocity this summer and as an experiment hit it off the tee with a TP5x on a couple holes and the Velocity was a little shorter, and of course useless going into the green.

I can hit a low running 7 iron 190 yards especially if it's a par 5 and I'm laying up. For going into greens,  If I'm playing well it's usually around 170. If I'm not, I'll pull it out around 160 ish. Anything under that and I'm over if I hit it well.

This is such an odd can of worms.

Just to play the game, I play a TaylorMade Tour Preferred CB.

Off the hip, I would estimate an expected carry average of 165.

Based upon the last season of data, ( about 35 rounds ), the 7i is my 2nd most frequently used club ( my 56* SW is #1 ). Those same stats show that I average 174 with the 7i, but there are some crazy outliers in there, with a short of 89, and a long of 211. Now, that said, my miss this season has been a bladed pull, which trends far longer.

Needless to say, what our brains tell us, and reality are not often that close.

My g30 7i stock shot is 165 yds.

But I have a L.O.F.T., so that 165 could be 20+ yards left or right, so maybe I should say that each 7i is an adventure, and I live for the 40% that are well struck and on target.

Golf. All of the other four-letter words were taken.

Yes, my last couple of rounds have me trending in the wrong direction, Lol.

I don't like playing mine over 205, but occasionally I'll hit it from 215-220, on a hot day where I'm nice and limber. Back in my early-mid 20s I routinely hit my Ping Zing 7i 230ish with little effort.

I play with some golfers that use their 7 around 200 easy. I have a nephew who would use his 8 iron from 200. He's a big guy, his driver swing speed a couple years ago was around 135. He would tee off with his 3iron from the grass and hit it as far as I hit my driver, enough to piss you off at times, but he's half my age and can flat hit a ball.

You at least have to tell the whole story. It was a 70yd slice from the woods and I got it out of the woods, but I sliced it 90yds into a pot bunker with 3' deep grass in the face of it......after 7 attempts to get it out of that bunker/grass, I picked up and took a 10. Lol
