A Positive Side to Winter

TheWahoo

Recommended Posts

I know that many of us that must endure the winter months may become somewhat depressed due to our inability to golf as much as we want, but there is a positive side to winter.   My doctor is a golfer and I guess trying to cheer me a bit, he said that we should understand that there are some health benefits to winter:

Fewer allergies:  No or little pollen in winter

Less bug-borne diseases:  Less insects in cold weather

Reduced inflamation: Much like putting ice on an injury

Improved brain function:  Apparently the brain works better at colder temperatures

Increased fat burn:  The body uses more calories to say warm.

Additionally, I find that spring is not only a renewal of nature, but hopefully my golf game as well.  I tell myself, its a new season.

Fewer allergies:  No or little pollen in winter

True, but they are replaced by colds and flu.  I'd rather have my allergies.

Less bug-borne diseases:  Less insects in cold weather

Spiders come indoors in winter; so do mice.

Reduced inflamation: Much like putting ice on an injury

Don't play much so less chance of inflammation but who wants to be cold for 4 months?

Improved brain function:  Apparently the brain works better at colder temperatures

But it's cold... with not much to do but drink more.  Oh wait, that improves brain function; see Buffalo Theory.

Increased fat burn:  The body uses more calories to say warm.

So, like the bear... eats lots before winter to store fat.  Happy Thanksgiving!

Or just move south to warmer weather and play golf until spring.  Did I cheer you up?

We don’t stop playing the game because we get old; we get old because we stop playing the game.”

I like winter also - ok not as much as summer. But.............

I don't have to mow the lawn, trim the shrubs, oh and then there's mulch (we generally have 3 truckloads delivered).

During the winter.....

I can really focus on strength training

Read up on golf techniques

And eat plenty of Christmas cookies

I honestly can't stand the winter, and I don't have the snow issues the guys up north have.  If it gets below 50, I start getting grumpy.  I need to move to Hawaii or something.  I would much rather it be somewhere in the 100-110 range over the 30 degree weather.

I'm the opposite I hate it once it gets above 80. I sweat when it's 30 out and I'm at work so you can imagine what I'm like in the heat.

I like winter. While I'd love to golf more, I also love to ski and as I found out last year, so does my son. My daughter is a speed demon down the mountain at 10 years old, lol. Plus, it give my body time to forget how to improperly swing the sticks!

I like winter pretty much only because of skiing, which takes my mind off of golf for a few months. Kind of. It is the time between golf and ski seasons that kills me...

Several years ago, my wife and some of her friends apparently decided that I should die, so they talked me into going snow skiing with them.  I quickly realized that putting two sticks on your feet and jumping off a mountain is an unnatural act.

Still love Spring and especially enjoy Fall in New England but dam those cold stretches can't do it anymore. It's for a younger person.

You'll never see 50 here in Hawaii. Once it gets below 70 at night, I think about getting a fireplace...

Then, I put socks on and all is well. Little humble brag on our weather ;).

I have to admit that after living in South Florida for a few years I'm ruined.  I'm fighting a nasty cold right now here in the Carolinas and as much as my heart is here I just don't think I can do this for the rest of my life, I didn't get sick once when I lived in Florida

Ok I know I'm going to be a contrarian on this (well maybe until February or the first 10 snowstorms). I do like winter because it allows me to catch up on projects/ workouts that I didn't get to during the summer.
