Hello from a Golf Travel Enthusiast!

Hello Everyone -

First day on the forum. A big golf enthusiast, even though I managed to stink it up for the most part this golf season.  :D  Hoping to get away to some warm weather though to redeem myself and salvage the year!

Welcome from the Pacific Northwest!  Glad you joined us.  Where are you headed for the winter?

Thanks!

Not sure yet. I've got a big corporate group I work with every year that is heading to Wild Dunes Resort in Charleston, SC. So myself and a buddy make a 9 or 10 days trip. Last year it was a few nights at Kingsmill Resort in Williamsburg, VA, a night in Pinehurst, NC, a couple of nights at Wild Dunes Resort, then back to Pinehurst Resort for a few nights. A pretty fun trip.

Played:

Kingsmill Resort River Course

Royal New Kent

Brickshire

Stonehouse

Dormie Club

Wild Dunes Harbor Course

Wild Dunes Links Course

Pinehurst No. 2

Pinehurst No. 7

I think I may be missing a course - brain's not working quite yet this morning.  ;)  Hoping to get to Sea Island, play True Blue in Myrtle, Dormie, and Tobacco Road.

Also have a corporate group going to Reunion Resort in Orlando at the beginning of April so may make my way there for a few nights.

How about you? Being from the Pacific Northwest, what are your thoughts on Chambers Bay? It got itself quite the crap kicking during the U.S. Open, but it actually looks like it would be a fun course to play under non-USGA-butchering conditions.

I have not played it yet.  My wife and I travel to play golf all over the country, but Chambers Bay is walking only and she has difficulty walking some courses after her back surgery.  She can do 9 holes but 18 is a little difficult.  We did walk Bandon Dunes 7 years ago.  My local pro played Chambers Bay shortly after it opened and was not impressed, but I still want to play it.  The Home Course nearby is also a nice track; home of the WSGA and Pacific Northwest Golf Association; I liked that course.  Also, Gold Mountain is a wonderful nearby public course.

Ten years ago I played 10 courses in 6 days in Myrtle Beach with a buddy and two other guys for his 50th birthday.  I loved MB; just wish it wasn't so far away.

We are headed to Palm Springs in January for a couple of weeks.  Last year we are in Phoenix, and the year before we went to Orlando and the World Golf Hall of Fame in St. Augustine.  Several years ago we went to Maui and played Kapalua.  It's time to start planning next year's winter trip.

We don’t stop playing the game because we get old; we get old because we stop playing the game.”

Sea Island is absolutely a bucket-list trip.  But be prepared to drop some $$$ if you plan to stay there - absolutely worth every penny, but it will cost a few!  There are a few other courses nearby that are worth consideration, too.  Look at Jekyll Island, just across the Intercoastal Waterway from Brunswick, GA.  The island was a summer home to the well-heeled during the turn of the 20th century - Rockafellers, and those types.  There are 4 courses on the island, owned by the state as State Park- and the fees are very reasonable.  Stay on the island  at the Jekyll Island inn, or a few other hotels nearby- And don't forget a stop at Southern Soul BBQ- a wonderful BBQ Joint at the western side of the Sea Island Airport. (exit Sea Island golf course, cross the street and follow the runway to the end.   Southern Soul is on the right side of the traffic circle!!!

A short (1.5 hour drive) from there you run into TPC Sawgrass and all the accompanying courses near the Jupiter, FL neighborhood- pricy but worth consideration, too.

Okay, being from Seattle, and having played Chambers several times, I feel the need to chime in. The layout is fun. The elevation change is way more dramatic in real life than it is on TV. IMO, there are several great holes on the backside, primarily, 12, 14, 15, 16, 17, and 18. But the greens are awful. Super slow and bumpy. As of now, from what I've heard, they are letting the poa annua take over the fescue. Hopefully the greens will be in better shape for 2019 U.S. Amatuer Best Ball. But if you are in the area, try to check it out. There aren't to many public U.S. Open tracks!

Yes, Sea Island is great. We send plenty of groups there. Actually had one group we set up with Sunday Players tickets then 4 nights at Sea Island. From my understanding, they loved it.

The nice thing about being in the golf vacation travel business is I typically get to visit resorts so a definite plus to all the long hours!

Bandon is definitely on my list of places to hit in the next couple of years. It sounds like you get around yourself. That's great!

If you need a hand planning this year's winter trip feel free to reach out to me by email address. I'd be more than happy to help out - It's what I do on a daily basis!
