Best Places to Play in Monterey & How to Play Cypress

GolfJunkie302

Recommended Posts

I am hopefully going to get down the the Monterey Bay area this winter. I was hoping some of you guys in the area could point me in the right direction for golf courses. I am currently looking at Del Monte, Spanish Bay, Poppy Hills, Pacific Grove, and Bayonet & Black Horse. Unfortunately, Pebble and Spyglass are out of my price range. Any others I should consider?

Okay, I know this is quite far-fetched, but does anyone have any thoughts about how I could play Cypress while I'm down there? Obviously it's virtually impossible to get on, but I would appreciate any suggestions.

Hi GolfJunkie302 - We send a lot of groups to the Monterey area, so feel free to reach out if you'd like a hand with the trip.

One recommendation I always make to our groups heading to Pebble Beach is Pasatiempo Golf Club - An Alister MacKenzie design, typically ranked #2 or #3 in the state for courses you can play, depending on the golf magazine publication. Every group we send there absolutely loves it, some more than Pebble Beach. Pebble is awesome, especially the views, but from a golf course layout standpoint, Pasatiempo is awesome!

Based on what you're looking for, here's what I would consider to be a solid golf vacation itinerary (obviously, not know knowing how many nights you're looking for).

Spanish Bay

Del Monte

Pacific Grove - they call it the 'poor mans' Pebble Beach. Much lower green fees but still plenty of fun.

Pasatiempo - if you can do 36 holes there, if tee times work, i would highly recommend it. It's a private club that allows outside play starting at 9:30. I send a lot of groups there and work closely with them

Bayonet is a good option, but I'd consider Half Moon Bay as well. 36-holes on property or TPC Harding Park

Another itinerary to consider would be:

Spyglass - play here one round instead of Spanish and Del Monte - essentially the same green fee that you would pay for 2 and would likely enjoy it more, perhaps crossing a course off of your bucket list by playing Spyglass

Pacific

Pasatiempo - 36 holes if possible

Bayonet or Half Moon Bay or TPC Harding Park

If it was me and my trip I would do this second itinerary.

As for Cypress . . . I've had a few groups ask if we can get them on Cypress but it is next to impossible. I have a contact that may be able to but he advised me to save it for myself. Selfishly, I may have to take that advice.  ;)

We have had success at the Olympic Club through a contact but that's hit and miss.

One last golf course to consider would be CordeValle where they played the 2016 Women's U.S. Open.

I have another golf course on the tip of my brain but can't quite remember it. Too early.

If you'd like a hand with it or run things by me, feel free to reach out to via our website. I'd be more than happy to help out!

I lived in Monterey for about 3 years and agree that pasatiempo is a must play.

I mentioned before but if you are going with a group you should look into a Dukes membership. Costs about 450 or so but you save it immediately if you play Spy or Spanish bay with a group of 4. Normally Spyglass was $360. As a dukes member it was $180 and you get that rate for everyone in the 4some. Similar for Spanish. Normally was 225 dukes member 125ish and you get that rate for all 4.

I think they throw in a free round at del monte which is normally around $110. Dukes rate somewhere around $40. I've been gone for about 6 years so current rates may be a little different.

Dukes normally doesn't get a deal on greens fees at pebble but it does sometimes in the winter so worth asking about. Another perk is preferential t times which can be a challenge if you aren't staying at one of the resort hotels.

Heard the remodel at poppy is great. Worth playing but you should join the NCGA before heading b/c it's the home course and the NCGA rate was significantly less expensive.

Love Bayonet and black horse. I'm a bit biased bc my military rate was out of this world, but usually have decent rates on golf now. Bayonet is the better of the 2 in my opinion but worth playing both depending on time/reply cost etc.

Cypress takes an act of God. Harder to get on than Augusta. Monterey Penninsula is a bit easier but would also be a stretch unless you know a member.

PG is poor mans pebble and is definitely worth playing.

I'll look into the Duke's membership. I saw something on their website about that. Sounds like a pretty good deal! Thanks for the heads up!

Ditto to what DJHubes said- I would add on a few if you are coming "down" to Monterey- consider stopping in Half Moon Bay and playing the courses there- Also, Harding Park in SF is a great track and adjacent to Lakeside at Olympic.  There are a few courses in the Monterey area are Laguna Seca, and Tehama (Clint Eastwood's private club, but will occasionally honor reciprocal agreements).  Old Del Monte is a nice track, behind the Hyatt Regency, adjacent to Monterey County Fairgrounds.

Okay, time for an update. Itinerary is set. Leaving on April 8th (I cannot believe I'm missing the final round of the Masters!). Here are the courses I'm going to hit up:

• Bayonet or Blackhorse (not sure which one yet. I would appreciate suggestions.)

• The Links @ Spanish Bay

• Poppy Hills

• Quail Lodge & Golf Club

• Pacific Grove

I am getting pretty pumped for this! I'm bummed I am going to miss Pebble, Spyglass, and Pasatiempo, but this is kind of a "budget trip." Not sure if any of you guys have heard of Youth on Course, but it's a great program that allows kids to play for super cheap. I can play all of these courses for only $5! Harding is also a YOC facility so I may try to hit that on the way up or down. I am also going to send a letter to Casey Reamer (head pro at Cypress), but I doubt that is going to get me anywhere...

We lived in PG (Pacific Grove) a couple of years back.. And we will live there again God willing. That whole peninsula is just a magical place. I had met quite a few out of towners playing the other local courses who planned entire trips around coming to play pebble.. And for whatever reason they didn't do their research on cost and availability of tee times and their dreams were crushed. I'm talking folks from the UK, Australia, Japan, and other parts of the globe. I always suggested PG golf links and promised that it would save their trip. I received many emails/texts of sincere thanks. Not only is it extremely easy to book, it's available on Golf Now (cheap), and it's absolutely beautiful. Its more of a natural links style and sits right at the tip of the peninsula.

A couple other courses that are slightly tucked away but worth a gander are Carmel valley ranch (awesome!), Laguna seca, Monterey pines (cheap but really fun course).

Enjoy your time in breathtaking Monterey. Watch out for the deer. Put some of that mystic fog in a mason jar and bring it home. Meet some friendly folks.. They're everywhere

Cheers!

Youth on Course is an incredible program, and you're very fortunate to be able to take advantage of it. It does not seem to have made its way the East Coast yet. I'd love for my girls to be able to play a place like Golden Horseshoe or Kingsmill for $5.

You should talk to some local courses. If you could get a couple of courses to support the program, then others might follow suit. Doesn't hurt to try!

This is a pretty solid list. Although, I will say this about Pacific Grove: the back-9 is awesome while the front-9 isn't anything special. I would honestly prefer just looping the back-9 twice. Still worth it for the back-9 alone though.. The other courses on your list are great though. As for Bayonet or Blackhorse, you can't go wrong with either one. Bayonet has smaller, more traditional greens, whereas Blackhorse has larger, but much more undulating greens. And if you're looking to go as far as Harding Park, another great course along the coast is Half Moon Bay Golf Links (I looked up the Youth on Course and it's one of the courses).

Also, good luck on your plea to Cypress!

Sadly, I have only played the Ocean Course (which I loved). The Ocean Course is a full on links style course with no houses and the Old Course meanders through a neighborhood, and I've heard is more traditional (check out a satellite view, it's obvious which is which). Not having played the Old Course, I can't say too much about it, but the Ocean Course will definitely have the better views being unobstructed by houses... The one exception is the 18th hole on the Old Course which is absolutely spectacular... I want to go back and play the Old Course simply to to play that 18th (seriously, look up pictures)...

Yeah, I don't know if I should try to play the Old just for the 18th or the Ocean for the overall views!
