Midwest Winter Golf

Recommended Posts

Well it's that time of year here in the Midwest where the the flags are moved to temporary locations and the course is mostly closed. I was wondering do any courses here in the Midwestern northern locations let you play on the greens year round?

Here's to a mild winter and those in the south who got a taste of what winter is like already.

We've got Turkeyfoot in Akron and I think Fox Den in Stow are open year round. Turkeyfoot is built on sand so they're fine, not sure about Fox Den though.

Our greens aren't green anymore.  They're white.

So no, we can't use them year round :)

The season is done for me. Around mid-November most of the courses around here aerate the greens and officially close down. Tarps for the greens and tee boxes come out by the end of November.

The Iowa State golf team used to practice all winter in a heated 4-stall hitting bay with an indoor putting green at the university course range. They no longer use it so it is now open to the public but I rarely see anyone there. The Iowa State golf team has since moved to a brand new facility and mini-course that is exclusive to them.

I keep trying to strike up conversations with the golf coach but they keep it pretty locked down. The dream shall never die however.

I've never seen tarps on greens here in Ohio. Is that a local "thing"

Last year, Boulder Creek was semi-open. If the weather forecast looked decent, someone would be there.

Very common thing here in Iowa because we have wind all winter and very little snow cover. The wind can dry out and damage the greens. Tarps are a pretty expensive piece of maintenance but as soon as the tarps come off in the Spring, the green is lush, bright green, ready for play and rolls true.

Our first snowfall of the year (2-3 inches) may have screwed up a potential MGS linkup in the MD/DC/VA area for next weekend... :(

Sounds good. My usual playing partner is a bit of a fair-weather guy. Any temperature spikes and I'm interested.
