chemclub
Brought the clubs in for a scrub before putting them away for the winter so I thought I would do a WITB. (winter is coming, and now my game has ended) My bag is a Bennington QO9. It protects the irons from chatter without the need for head covers. https://forum.mygolfspy.com/topic/19856-unofficial-review-–-bennington-bags-–-no-club-chatter/ Irons and wedges were custom fit. Everything else is off-the-rack. Nothing too state-of-the-art here. Driver (either of these depending on the mood). TaylorMade R11 9*, Fujikura Blur 60g Flex-S, 44.25 Wishon 919THI, 11*, Mitsubishi Fubuki 60g Flex-S, 44.75. This club was loaned to me by my iron fitter to see what I think. The shaft is pretty well fit for what I need. I am super impressed with this club. It launches a little high because of the loft, but it is loooong. Feels so solid. 3 Woods (either of these depending on the mood). Mizuno JPX EZ, 15*, Fujikura FW Flex-S, 43 Titelst 980F, 15*, TT dynamic gold S300, 42. The royal and ancient 980F has such a solid feel at impact, but the head is so tiny. Mizuno head is much larger, but has a bit of a hollow, tinny feel to it. Safe to say the honey moon has worn off for the Mizzy. So I am in the hunt for another. Hybrid TaylorMade R11 Rescue, 18*, Aldila RIP 85g Flex-S Meh—hook machine—on the hunt for a 5 wood in the future. I make it work in the mean time. Irons Miura PP-9003 SN 4-GW (22*-50*), Nippon 1150GH Stiff +1/2", GP MCC Align grips w/ 3 wraps Wedges Miura 1957 K-grind SW(55*) LW(60*), Nippon 1150GH Stiff +1/2", GP MCC grips w/ 3 wraps PW-LW, same length at 36.25" Irons and wedges were all MOI matched to 2719.6 kg/cm^2 Putter MLA Pro XDream, 34 Std lie - Thanks MGS! Haven't played an actual round yet, just living room stuff. Others… PING ZING TR, 34 1* flat PING Anser TR1966, 34 1* flat This summer I was fit for the irons and wedges. https://www.heisergolf.com I was fit with the intention of getting some Wishon irons and Edel wedges. After dialing in the shaft, I didn't really love the Wishon irons. A combination of the look and the feel. The fitter then handed me the Miura PP9003 Straight Neck (even though I said the Miura was out of the price range - he said just try it). I struck them really nice. Uh Oh! The fitter said they were his last set of PP9003 SN heads and he was willing to sell them to me for (almost) the same price as the Wishon heads. Plus, he was willing to sell me the Miura 1957 K-grind wedges at the same price point. I was sold. The K-grind wedges are nice and clean, the sole is magic out of the sand. I really loved the look (in my hand at least) of the Miura CB57 which are more of a true players cavity back, although still similar in size to the 9003. However, I really liked the look of the 9003 at address better (http://wpmediars.golfwrx.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/06/IMG_0222.jpg), so for the discounted price of the 9003, it was a no-brainer. The offset values look to be around the same as current Titleist AP2 and CB models give or take 0.5 mm. Future plans for WITB The next step will be to fit and optimize the top of the bag. Of those changes, I am most interested in finding a deep-face 3 wood. I play my 3w almost exclusively off the tee, so I think a deep-face 3 wood would be a great option. After that comes the driver and then the 5 wood. WITB (my 4i is at work so I can swing it in the hall for a break) IRONS TOP OF THE BAG All shafts were stock shafts except this beauty which is low launch to pair with the 11* Wishon head. STUDque
Great stuff chem. You've inspired me to update mine. Those Miuras are things of beauty. Love how you're still rocking older drivers. deejaid
Very nice! I never should have gotten rid of my Miura K grind wedges. PlaidJacket
Interesting that you have a Wishon 919THI and apparently like it. I had the exact head/club fit-built for me. To my amazement I was unable to hit the thing for some reason. (low and hooking mostly) I'll confess that my fitting was performed indoors which I don't like for drivers or FW woods. I've often wondered if the way Wishon designed the face was perhaps not agreeable to my swing. It's a straight face design from bottom to top without any roll. I do game Wishon irons and they are the best irons I've ever played. So far... Love how you're still rocking older drivers. That R11 was a great one. Sent from my iPhone using MyGolfSpy The R11 can still compete! I smash that thing past all the guys in my regular foursome so if it ain't broke... The thing that might kick it out of the bag for good would be a custom fit driver. Also, within a month of buying the R11 it somehow got a small dimple/dent where the crown meets the toe edge. I see it every time I put the club down. It doesn't affect performance but still!!! Sent from my iPad using MyGolfSpy I think the wedges have a nice clean look at address which I really liked. I am not over the moon about them but I am also pretty satisfied with my purchase. Out of the sand they are incredible but probably perform like any other wedge off normal turf. Funny enough, the first round I played with the 919THI I almost sent it back to the fitter. Really glad I didn't. I find the feel of the 919THI just soooo solid. Also, given Tom's reputation and no BS approach, I really believe him when he says... "With the 919 because of our design and because of our production QC efforts, over the production of all 919 heads, you will see the smash factor range between 1.47 to 1.50. With all other drivers you will see that be between 1.39 and 1.45 because in mass production they can't control the COR as well as we can for our smaller production." Golfspy_CG2
That's a really well thought out and put together bag. Love those Miuras's and that 56 degree wedge, I think I need to go take a cold shower!! Like you I tried a Wishon iron a couple models about 10 years ago and while I appreciated the craftsmanship and the time spent in getting the specs correct, they just never did anything for me. PlaidJacket
I failed to mention that I also game a Wishon 929-HS 16 deg. 4 wood. Love that club as I get repeatable results with it. I can't recall exactly what shaft I have in the 929 but I believe it's one of his S2S Green models. Might even be one of Robin Arthurs' designs. The combination of club head, shaft, and fit work very nicely for me. I really wanted to bag the 919 but it just didn't work out for me all I can say. It's a beautiful driver and sets up nicely in a traditional sort of way.
