Srixon 565/765 combo vs Titleist 716 AP2

Recommended Posts

Have about 5 rounds on the new AP2's that I picked up with Recoil 95 stiff shafts the other day. I was gaming a Srixon 565/765 combo set with Steelfibers in X flex, which a fitting showed I no longer had the swing speed for. I LOVE the way the Recoil shafts feel so far. First day out with the AP2's I was throwing darts but on some other recent days where my swing hasn't been great the results have been decidedly less than stellar.

I am having to fight the urge to pull the shafts out of the AP2's and put them in the Srixons. So far I have not liked the turf interaction in the AP2 vs my old Srixons, and I have see a noticeable difference in the amount of, or lack thereof, of forgiveness. The AP2's drop off a cliff on off center strikes, and they don't have to be very far off center. I also seem to be catching more shots thin with the AP2's. I am not a "digger", but I am a little on the steep side of neutral for sure and like to take a divot.

From anybody that has hit both, what are your comparative thoughts? And how long should I fight the urge to reshaft my Srixon's that I loved?

Well, I owned a set of 565/765 irons in the Modus3 105's.   I really liked them a lot and played them most of the season, until I got selected for the JPX900 testing, then I went to the Team Titleist invitational and got to try the entire 718 line.  I ended up with a combo of AP1/AP2, I must say I love the AP2 of the bag 7-P.  I'm not near the swing speed you are based on your too shafts, I'm right around 90-91 with driver and 79-81 with a 7 iron.   I was actually going to go with the recoil in the new 718's but, my best results at the demo were with the AMT Red, so that's what i went with.  So far so good.

I like you, tend to be a bit steep and that's was where the Srixon's shined.  However, I've had no digging issues at all with the AP2, and would say I've hit more good shots than bad with them.   I would say give them more time, but only you truly know whether you have seen enough to know if they are going to work or not.   I had to move on from a set of MP60's about 15 years ago, for the exact reason you mention about turf interaction.

Reshafted my Srixon 9 iron with an extra recoil shaft and did a head to head vs the AP2. For my swing it was a no brainer and the assistant pro at the club confirmed it after watching me hit some shots. Much better dispersion and consistent flight with the Srixons.

Pulled the recoils out of the AP2's and sold those heads on eBay. Made enough to pick up a G400 3 wood to match my driver so feel like this is a win win win. Now just have to give this 24 hour epoxy time to cure. Waiting is the hardest part!

@Jdlingle....

This post may seem a bit odd or wayward, but stay with me, hopefully I'm able to ask my question clearly enough.

So at your level, basically as scratch player, you're going back to a more forgiving iron head due to a better dispersion and more consistent flight.  I'm sure you are looking at a very small window for the results of your shots, you probably expect the 6 iron to fly pretty much on the exact same path and land within a very tight area of the green.   And you feel the AP2's didn't do that enough for you?

As opposed to someone like me at a 17, some would ridicule for going to an AP2 head.  But I would say my level of expectation is much much less than yours.  if I have a 6 iron in hand (which means I'm hitting from 140 yards on average, I'm happy with it being anywhere on the green for the most part and will take a two putt and run away smiling every time.   But in reality more than half the time I'm going t miss that green, as long as it doesn't end up in a hazard and I miss hopefully to the correct side of the green, again I'm going to expect that as a bogey plus golfer.   Where i might find the 765 or even 565 a bit more forgiving, on slight mishits.   But overall not a ton of difference, maybe on a low on the face shot, I'd still be on the front edge fo the green as opposed to short in font of it on the same miss with the AP2, but again at my level it's not going to kill me.

So to sum up, is it your level of expectation is such that you feel the slight misses with the AP2 leave you farther away from the green, I'm sure you're  hitting the green with the AP2, but you're birdie putt may be 20 feet as opposed to 15 feet?

Hopefully this came across as intended, which was a compliment to your game, but wondering about your expectations of the two clubs?

Makes perfect sense Carolina! I'm basically looking for better bad shots. Irons are not a huge strength of mine. Contact is fine but face angle control is hit or miss at times. My bad shots with the Srixons seem to lose less distance than my bad shots with the AP2's and stay in a tighter window. The Srixons seem to have a larger sweet spot although I can't confirm this. And the v sole seems to mesh with my attack angle well, which may be one reason I'm losing less distance on poor strikes.

Top line is similar on both but the AP2's have a substantially shorter blade length. I can work them much easier, but less real estate seemed to lead to more poor strikes, which are more pronounced in distance loss. I'm giving up some workability for forgiveness. I was really struggling with the AP2 long irons.

The AP2's are awesome irons, I just feel more comfortable with the Srixons, especially in the longer irons.

Good points.  Your explanation about the better misses is something I think I heard Spieth say in reference to why he as a Tour Player plays the AP2's when most assume tour players would play the SC or MB.  If the best in the world want forgiveness, why in the heck wouldn't we....other than our stupid internet ego..ha

Oh and I'm glad you mentioned long irons, I should say, I only have the AP2 in the 7 down, I have the AP1 in the 4-6, I'm not completely delusional.

If I had stayed with them I probably would have went to AP1 long irons. That AP2 head in a 4 iron is pretty daunting, not going to lie!

Yea it is. I tried the AP3 for the whole set or long irons and they didn't do anything for me.

I hit the AP3's at my recent fitting and wasn't impressed with their feel at all either. That was something else I forgot to mention in my comparison was that the Srixon's seem a LOT softer on strikes to me.
