Direction of Tee Flipping With The Driver

Golfspy_CG2

Recommended Posts

So I spent a good 45 minutes or so yesterday on a driving hole of our course, just hitting driver to get a feel for my new G30.

But I came away with a question.   On several what I feel were well struck shots, the tee flipped and landed 5 to 10 yards BEHIND me and by behind i mean directly behind my aim line so say if the tee was the middle of clock face it landed at 6 O'clock.    Then on several again well struck shots, it landed as much as 12 yards in FRONT of me or 12 O'clock.    There were a couple that landed out to the side (say 2 o'clock)

So does anyone know what makes it land at 6 vs 12 O'clock?   Is one over the other an indication of a better swing or angle of attack.    I pretty much put the tee in the same length each time, with just about half the ball above the club-face at address.

Nice thread! You're on fire lately.

I use a plastic tee that generally stays stuck in the ground after I hit. If it flips out, it's because I hit too high on the face.

Maybe the 6 vs 12 direction has more to do with how "sticky" the ground is where you placed it. I'd venture to guess that if you put the tee back in the same hole you used, it would flip forward because it's looser. But if it's in fresh ground, it might bend forward then flick backwards.

Just a thought and totally shooting from the hip.

Way too many variables to draw any conclusions.

How about watching the ball flight instead?

Just a thought.

Lol I've said many times that I wanted to do an extended study on this

That would make an excellent slo-mo video. I'm not sure if the iPhone can capture that fast so it may require the big guns.

Oh I did, they were all pretty similar a high fade way down the fairway...almost 215 yards  :D     It just became "a thing" as I went to look for the tee after each shot, and sometimes it was forward and sometimes backward.

Lol I've said many times that I wanted to do an extended study on this

I think you are just the man for the job!!  It would be neat to see all the data, kinda combined with trackman data on each one.

Maybe as Rev says, it's meaningless, but to me to be a 25 yard difference in two different directions seems there should be some logical reason.

Hey Shooting from the hip is what half of all Internet Forum posts are....LOL

It's as good as explanation as I could come up with.  I did tee from the same area each time, but not the same hole.  And I was using the plastic tees as well, I think 2 3/4 if I recall correctly.

That would make an excellent slo-mo video. I'm not sure if the iPhone can capture that fast so it may require the big guns.

Basically just Newton's Third Law of Motion. Ground pushes on the tee with the same force the driver imparts to it.

Greatly depends on the tee interacting with the ground. Is the ground in front of the tee soft or firm? Let's assume the driver exerts the same amount of force on the tee with each swing.

If firm relative to driver force on the tee, then the ground pushes back on the tee and sends it backwards

If soft relative to driver force on the tee, then the ground gives way to the driver force on the tee and flies forward.

There are many more complicating factors besides that (such as were on tee the driver might make impact) but that is the simplest explanation.

My preferred tee flight is when the tee rebounds off the group and pops straight up. I always imagine holding my follow through and lazily extending my hand to catch the tee on the way back down. Tee goes back into the pocket and then pimp walk off the front of the tee box.

I've honestly been wondering this since I started watching golf consistently. The pros seem to have the tee go to the 6 o'clock position more often than not. Chemclub's post makes a lot of sense that many factors would affect where the tee flips to.

Imo if the driver face makes contact higher on the tee it would flex/dig into the ground more so when it pushes back it would fly backwards, whereas lower on the tee would push it forward.

WE MUST TEST THIS!! USE ALL THE MONIES!!

Yes, in my case Newton's law applies--every action has an equal and opposite reaction.   The action of my rather bad swing has the equal and opposite reaction of a rather bad shot.   To coin the phrase- I find that I am standing too close to the ball after I hit it.

I find this interesting that someone has this thought. I don't normally give any mind to where my tee goes-lands. But just this past Friday I had the hardest time finding my tee after many shots. There was no set pattern. Using Carolina's clock face analogy my tees were landing all around the dial. I was trying to keep hold of a lucky tee for further use and several times one of my playing partners would find it completely out of range from where I was looking. Seemed odd to me. Oh well.

Interesting post Carolina.

Yeah Plaid, It's not something I ever gave any thought of until, I was hitting 6 tee shots within a span of 5 minutes of so and had to "find" the tee after each one.   The one that was particuarly puzzling was going from 10 yards in front to 12 yards or so behind on back to back swings, that produced pretty much the same ball flight.

Oh well, the things us northern based golfers have to think about during the cold winter days..  ;)

So I hit ten drives on the range today - they were all good - very good - I used the same wooden tee every time and tee'd it up in approximately the same spot. Our ground is beginning to dry out but still wet for summer up North - think late Spring conditions.

The tee ended up all over the place although seemingly most frequently about 6 feet away towards 2 o'clock or 7 o'clock.

I would add that I didn't always aim at the same target and after the first three hit an iron, hybrid or fairway wood in between. I was playing a simulated nine. :)

Yes, the difference is 6 o'clock, 😂🤣.

Mine usually end up at 6 o'clock, about 8 foot behind. My mate I play with most weeks is usually 10 yards straight forward. He should enter the "long tee championships" sometimes he gets it out about 20 yards.

Our solid drives go about the same distance (the ball!) and obviously the conditions are the same.

Several years ago I played with a friend of mine on a par 3 hole.  He teed up his ball and took a mighty swing with his 9i.  Big divot!  The sod went forward about 10 feet and the tee was still stuck in it.  The ball was in the divot.  We couldn't stop laughing!!
