F8+ First thoughts

LostHack

Recommended Posts

I picked up the F8+ two days ago and today I finally received the proper XStiff shaft from the store(Project X HZRDUS Yellow).

Initial observations from range:

Club face

- The CNC milled grooves were more shallow than I was expecting which is good

• Also it was very easy to clean off dirt/grass

Design

- The Nardo tone with Carbon accent was easy on the eyes, and didn't reflect too much Sunlight during setup

Weight

- The club felt solid in my hands, although I didn't have the opportunity to adjust weight placement

Loft adjustment

- As with other current drivers on the market, the adjustable loft was simple to adjust, and clearly labeled.

• With the low launch shaft I started at 9.5° then changed to 10.5° for better trajectory

Sound

- I wasn't extremely impressed with the noise it made, however when I initially tested the club pre-release in a simulator there no noticeable change in sound between my misses and solid contact. I was glad to see that outside at the range there was an obvious acoustic feedback

Not sure if this was helpful as the in-depth reviews online. I honestly just wanted a place to post my pictures!

I'm jealous. I'm thinking about picking up the F8 fairway sometime this season.

Thought you were a ping man now?

Trust me, I want that G400 fairway. But I also want a matching driver/fairway wood. If I wouldn't have bought the F7+ last year, I'd be all over the Ping combo mombo.

I used to be a huge ping guy, I currently play ping i200s. When I looked into the g400 it didn't really exceed any of my expectations. However, I hit the g400 3W with the silver tour shaft well.

Nice upgrade from the burner.

Give the cobra a chance and it'll plant roots in your bag.

I am with you here. I have the G400 driver and I am trying to decide between the G400 and F8 3 wood.

ZarFot glad to hear you like it. I had one on pre-order but after hitting it I cancelled my order. Purely based off feel. The G400 just felt so good to me.

I like Cobra drivers... have an F7+... but

1. Never have been able to get along with 2 tone colored drivers personally... not sure why.

2. The whole milled face thing seems gimmicky.  The driver is on the face for only a fraction of a second...

When the clubface collides with the ball it's total contact time is approximately just under 1/2 Millisecond = 400 Microseconds =  0.0004 Seconds = 400/1,000,000 = 4/10.000 Second and the peak force applied to the ball can be as high as 4000 pounds.

wait a minute... you're saying that a driver which you swing at 100mph or more is not different than a wedge that you swing anywhere from 3mph to 60 or 70 ??

that doesn't make sense...

I too like the F8. If I were buying one I'd have to go with an all black head. Two-tones don't do it for me.

I believe the original idea behind the milled face was for a uniform flatness.

Driver faces have been “polished” for as long as I can remember.

Anything to get things more consistent should be a plus for us golfers.

Sounds better than “twist face”... who comes up with these things?

It's basically suppose to do the same thing as the the twist face. The F8 has a flat face not the bulge and roll of others.

From Cobra “The fully machined driver face utilises a multi-directional CNC milling pattern for more precision compared to hand polished drivers.

This allows for a 3% thinner and 10% lighter face, with improved bulge and roll curvatures for more ball speed and distance.”

So still has bulge and roll.

I'll be playing Sierra Lakes in Riverside, CA today for the first time. It will be interesting to see how it handles my game ball vs the cheap range ones. I believe some of the holes are pretty tight so driving accuracy will be key.

Just finished my round and it went fairly well for the conditions... 30mph + winds coming off the mountains which made play and putting difficult. It was a challenge, but it was a great day all in all. F8+ had a few nice drives 350 + yards because of the wind haha. I dialed down to 9.5 again and swapped the 2g and 12g to position more weight near the back of the club. This led to the perfect ball flight for the windy conditions when struck properly... Looking forward to play hopefully tomorrow away from the mountains. It's hard to judge performance when you have to purposely draw or fade into the wind. Or aim 40 yards L/ R to account for it

Just remember, the 400+ yard drives that DJ and others are credited with in their driving averages are DOWNHILL, and often, downwind! Those 350 drives COUNT!!!
