Two lessons... With two coaches... Two opposite opinions... What to do now?

Recommended Posts

I never realized that we had so many teaching pros on this site. I'm blown away by it actually.

I agree with the one who admits he's not a pro - Plaid - you determine what you want to do to tweak and refine an already good swing and recognize that it takes time even with the amount that you play.

It generally takes touring pros a year to implement changes and they have all the time in the world to devote to it.

Good luck!

So now there's another non-teaching Pro besides me. I like reading these posts and spend a bit time figuring out what the heck guys are talking about.

Well I'd say drink two tall 16oz Miller Lites and then take the 2nd can and put it under your left foot.  On the way through the ball mash that can flat as a flitter.  Now ya moving ya weight forward and through the shot.   Enjoy your new swing  ;)

One question, what's a “flitter”?

Well I'm no pro either, but it looks to like your standing on the wrong side of the ball.

I was thinking the same but thought that's too obvious.

I'd recommend that you have some goals in mind as you select a teacher. Share these goals with the teachers you're thinking of working with, and use their reactions to help choose who you want to work with. In particular, decide whether you want to:

1. Completely revamp your grip/alignment/swing to meet a teacher's ideal. This will be an extremely long process. It will be frustrating. You will likely play much worse before you play any better. You will need to practice a great deal.

2. Fine tune the game you already have. You're looking for much smaller changes, which you can hopefully assimilate into your game more quickly. You're still likely to slide a bit, but not nearly as badly as tearing your entire game apart and rebuilding it. You will still need to practice to incorporate new positions and new feels into your game, but hopefully they are closer to your existing positions and feels, so you can get there quicker.

No one other than you can answer whether #1 or #2 is right for you. Nick Faldo went with #1 and became one of the best players ever. He invested thousands of hours in the process. You may be willing to do that. You may have a job and a family and you just want to get a little bit better to have more fun. Neither approach is right or wrong in the absolute.

Many teachers only know one way to swing the golf club, and they will steer you toward #1 no matter what. Teachers don't often admit to this when asked directly, so you'll need to ask their students.
