Rebuilding driver-epoxy question

Recommended Posts

I'm re-shafting my back up club seems easy enough. Cleaned the head from the previous shaft. Prepped the shaft, mixed the epoxy from golf works and 3 hours later.. The epoxy is still tacky. I know it says 24 hour cure time, but is it THAT different from regular home epoxy? regular epoxy instantly starts curing, heating up, etc. I'm getting basically nothing.. Did I do something wrong, (50/50 ratio, mixed, etc) or is my patience the problem?

Yeah, be patient. It does take a while. When I build clubs, I mix the epoxy on a paper plate with a pencil. Once finished, I let the pencil sit in the epoxy and let it sit on my workbench. I can see just how far along the epoxy is getting.

By the next morning the pencil won't come off the plate, so the club head definitely wont come off either.

The stuff I use says 18 hours. Like Bulldog said, slower curing is better than 30 minute cure that will be brittle and snap.

24 hour epoxy is just that. You have to wait, it will start setting up at 10-12 hours, but won't cure until 24 hours. I mix it up with a popsicle stock and just lay the stick it in the unused epoxy and the next morning I will check it. I usually put the club together in the evening and just leave it until the next day.

I agree with above. When I restart I always leave a little out on cardboard to see how it's curing. The 1:1 ratio 24 hour cure takes about 10 hours to get hard and another 10-12 to fully cure. Take your time and it will come out right.

Checked this morning, definitely more of what I expected. It'll still be several days before I even get the opportunity to swing. Thanks for your help guys!

That's the best thing, I always try to build when I know that I'm not playing for a couple of days. So I know the epoxy is cured

I actually got swing it a couple of times today. I wouldn't say I possess the lightest seeing you've ever seen. The head stayed sure and tight, and this thing absolutely pounds with the new shaft in it. Can't wait to see how it sends them in summer with some humidity. Right now I'm a full club less on every thing because of that dense cold air.

I'm a little surprised everyone is using long curing epoxy. I've always used quick cure and never had any problem at all. But I do make sure my hosels are totally clean and shaft tips are clean and properly abraded.

I too have always used the 5 min epoxy and have never had a problem.  On the other hand a friend of mine reshafted his clubs once before a tournament with the 5 min epoxy (did so days in advance) and during the tournament his heads kept flying off

The tour fitting vans use the quick stuff as well when someone need a club quick. I have always just used the 24 hour. It's just as easy for me because I do the club work during the week night so I have days before I can play anyway.

The thought has crossed my mind. We don't have any real golf shops near me, which is weird being near Napa where a lot of people vacation and play golf.

I actually spoke with the KZG dealer I got my 60* wedge from about his business. He said it's tough going as people just want Taylor Made, Ping, etc. He has a tough time getting people to understand the quality of KZG. Most people think they are knock-offs.

It's definitely a brand that the weekend golfer does not know about but should.

I can get 2 sets of heads only of KZG, 1 set is forged CB, the other is Forged MB. They are 179 each, I want to make a combo set, so I'm thinking that for about, 550 or so I can make a really nice set, is it worth it?

I've heard of KZG, I just don't know a lot about them. I do all my own club work, the only thing I would need to have done is loft and lie adjustments, I have a friend that has a that ability so that cost should be minimal. As a Lefty it's difficult to find anything I want to swing before I buy. So these could be a good option. Just want to make sure they are legit good before I buy. I am going to check others, but the price seems good, almost too good. That's why I'm a bit skeptical.

KZG is the real deal. There are other members here who will back that up. And if you have questions call them. They are more than glad to help. Very under the radar but very very good clubs.

Thanks, I have a work bonus coming, and I am looking to do something without spending all of it, this may be a very good option depending on what I find out at a fitting.

This is wrong. They all use 24 hour 3m epoxy(usually dp810) and a curing clamp. They do it on every club and it's done in 5-10 mins

Ok, that makes sense. They showed a video on Golf channel of a tour van at one of the tournaments once and I thought they said they use the 5 minute stuff, but I must have remembered incorrectly it was a while ago. I should have checked that for sure before posting.

You can spend a whole lot of money and buy an auditor one or you can do like I did and make one with a heating element and a box built out of wood. Get the temp around 120 and let it sit in it for 5-10 minutes. Done
