Anybody in between grip sizes?

Recommended Posts

I'm currently playing Pure mid wraps and really like them but just had a reg put on my wedge as an experiment and it feels great. Previously I tried winn dritac standard and it just became too small and loose feeling. That may have just been a winn characteristic (lesson learned). I'm about to pull the trigger on a new set of maltby dbm irons 4-GW and am faced with a dilemma here. The mid size are good to help with grip pressure reduction but cause a bit of unwanted stiffness in the wrists at takeaway and release. My wrists feel a little looser with standard and club release feels a bit more natural. I'm completely stumped on which way to go. Good thing grips are the most easily and inexpensively swapped out part of the club but I'd like to not waste $40 if I can help it. Any suggestions? The Pure standard does feel a little more stout than a tour velvet style so maybe that's the ticket? Cheers!

I do anything from a reg size grip plus a couple of wraps to a +1/32. I went to a few wraps on the wedges last year and I liked the little smaller feel.

You can always use tape to build up a regular grip to less than it equal to a midsize grip. There are online resources/charts that will help you figure out the number of layers based on the shafts Butt diameter and the Grips core diameter.

It is important to pay attention to the core diameter because a .590 and .60 become different sizes on the same shaft.

My suggestion would be to put some cheap grips and experiment on a single club to find what you would like. Hireko golf has some really inexpensive grips and you can usually find discount or free shipping codes if you want to gol solvent route. Or you could just use air and experiment with a single grip.

Every time my teacher grabs my clubs he always remarks how much bigger the butt-end of my Lamkins feel compared to his Golf Prides. I've never really noticed something like that, since I pretty much only use Lamkin.

Best thing to do would be to go to a big-box retailer and grab samples of the grips to see how they feel. Most even have them installed on a small piece of shaft to get a better idea on the feel/thickness.

Don't forget you can have extra wraps added under a grip as well. I really love my midsize plus two wraps.

I use the standard size GP CP2 wrap (blue). They are slightly reduced taper in the lower hand. (meaning slightly thicker). I only use one wrap of tape under the grip.

I play standard PURE Pro with +4 wraps.  My decision to go regular vs mid-size was based on weight and not wanted to have to re-swing weight my clubs when I regrip.

The beautiful thing about PURE's is you can just blow them on and off.  That makes it very easy to add a couple wraps to a regular and see how you like it.

I'm as well in between grip sizes, always have used Lamkin grips with 2-3 extra wraps of tape. As others have said, check grip or shaft diameter if not sure. Tour Velvets, to me always felt more on the thinner side. The Pures with extra tape should do nicely for you.

Yeah on all of my mids, I've had 3 lower wraps to help reduce taper some. The other great thing about pures is that they're relatively cheap. $4 at PGATSS. Can't beat that. Maybe I'll try +1 and +3 lower hand for kicks

I use standard grips(Lamkin UTx) and I put 2 build up wraps, which does not include the 2-sided tape wrap. I blow all my grips on now and do not use 2 sided tape, so in order to get the correct size I use 3 wraps of blue painters tape. Which then gives me standard plus 2 wraps, it feels right to me. So that's what I go with.

I used this site (http://golf.okrasa.eu/clubs/grip/grip-fitting/) to figure out tape wraps for my clubs to achieve a uniform feel (irons .600 shaft, driver .610 shaft, 3w .620 shaft). It will also give you a good starting place if you are unsure of what sizing or number of tape wraps to add.

I use standard grips with one layer of of build up tape full length, two layers of build up tape in the bottom 5" (right hand) and then one layer of double sided tape. I've never used the air install on a grip, always worried its gonna feel like its slipping. I'm real grip sensitive, play full cords and don't wear a glove.

I learned something!  Larger grips can mess with the swing weight and I never thought about adding that much tape under a standard grip to get the feel right.

Played them using air with no double sided tape for about 6 months or so now maybe a little longer than that in all types of weather, hot and humid, cold, rain, cold and rain, and I have never ever felt any slippage in the grip. If your not sure try one club and see. It really makes changing grips much easier, and no chemicals

Pure grips specifically are made to be installed without 2 sided tape if desired. They even make a special attachment for air compressor guns to do this. Something about the molding process that doesn't leave any seams inside the grip like all others do. Technically you could use air to install other grips but the concern is mainly the grip tearing or exploding due to the weak spots in the seams. With Pures it's pretty much like blowing up a balloon. No seams. Or like stretching other seamless rubber products snugly over elongated objects.... I was talking about rubber gloves.. Get your minds out of the gutter

So ultimately I did some more field research (a trip to pgatss) and was able to find the exact shaft I'm interested in (Nippon N.S. Pro950GH) with a standard grip in the Mizuno fitting section. The butt end is .610 which is perfect for my cause. Not only did I get to spend an hour testing out the shaft on the whole mizuno lineup but got to feel how .610 translates to a standard grip. It was perfect! I may not even need the extra wraps after all. Thank you PGATSS for allowing me to use your gear to figure out what I'm going to buy somewhere else! Can't beat $100 for an annual membership = unlimited launch monitor use, access to all demo and fitting products. Free installation labor on more regrips than I'll use in a year and discounts on a bunch of other crap. The end

I have the air tool for pure, air works with any grip, I have Lamkin UTx, and GP align, and I don't use 2 sided tape on any of them, and they do not slip, ever. You can't move them if you wanted to, and I've tried. The concern for “popping” is when removing them. If there is 2 sided tape used, they can be a pain to remove. Putting them on is no issue at all. Short bursts of air while pushing it on.

  • 3 weeks later...

Been using standard size grips forever, but for the last 6 months been loving a midsize Golf Pride MCC+4. Now I went with a standard size GP MCC+4 with 2 wraps and it's perfect for me, allows me to have more of a wrist cock.

So I went with pure pros on a .610 butt. 2 full wraps, a 2/3 wrap, and 2 lower hand wraps. So far it seems to be the solution thay I was looking for.
