Rakes left in bunker or out of bunker

I prefer out myself but I don't get too hung up on it. My only rant is about those that don't use said rake.

Out. And personally, wished all courses would sink a piece of 1” pvc to put the handle in and stand them dead vertical. That would eliminate the rake in the bunker and the time saving would be there for maintenance as they wouldn't have to disembark the equipment to move it, just drive nearby and grab it and move it.

In The Bag
Driver: TaylorMade M2 (2017) w/ Project X T1100 HZRDUS Handcrafted 65x
Strong 3 wood: Taylormade M1 15* w/ ProjectX T1100 HZRDUS handcrafted 75x
3 Hybrid: Adams PRO 18* w/ KBS Tour Hybrid S flex tipped 1/2"
4 Hybrid: Adams PRO 20* (bent to 21*) w/ KBS Tour Hybrid S flex tipped 1/2"
4-AW: TaylorMade P770 w/ Dynamic Gold Tour Issue Black Onyx S400

SW: 56* Scratch Tour Dept(CC grooves) w/ Dynamic Gold Spinner
LW: 60* Scratch Tour Department (CC grooves) w/ Dynamic Gold Spinner
XW: 64* Cally XForged Vintage w/ DG X100 8 iron tiger stepped
Putter: Nike Method Prototype 006 at 34"

Have a ton of back-ups in all categories, but there are always 14 clubs in the bag that differ depending on the course and set-up. Bomb and gouge. Yes, I'm a club gigolo.

It's a great idea, and it probably would work at private CC.  However, it wouldn't take long during the day before all the rakes would be on the ground at a muni.

I've played courses where the rakes are provided on the golf carts.   Most assuredly, some old coot such as myself, will forget to put it back on the cart and leave it at the bunker.   A few holes later, they will need it again and say oh manure, I forgot.

I've always preferred them to be in the bunker.  I would much rather have the slim chance that it hits the rake and leaves the bunker over the slim chance that it hits the rake and goes into the bunker if it's left outside the bunker.

Yeah, I've done that too.  On the surface it really seems like a good idea.  But when the cart comes back in without the rake, the club really can't send it back out without a rake, and someone has to go out and find it.

I'm an out of the bunker man and I try to leave that sucker so it will impede future shots from rolling in that sob.  If it nailed my arse I'm going to give the next man behind me a chance of a lucky bounce away from it.

I used think IN, because if your ball is going in the bunker, and the rake is in the bunker, you get the penalty for being in the bunker. Over the years though, it just makes more sense for playing purposes for them to be out. Grounds crews go out way ahead of play moving rakes isn't going to slow them down so much they can't stsy ahead of play.

Not so much staying ahead of play. Although that does become a factor at times with our first out group which thinks it's a national crises if they don't finish in under 3 hours

But more so delays them from moving on to other course maintenance. Being a municipal course, we don't have the budget of privates, thst may have crews of 40 working evey morning

This is probably more of an issue during the weekday play. Since that's most likely when the other duties would be needed more.

I have a completely different idea, eliminate the rakes, period.

Bunkers are supposed to be hazards, yet too many tour pros and accomplished amateurs use them as safe havens.

Eliminate the darn rakes, and let hazards be hazards for crying out loud.

If you don't like tough sand shots, stay the heck put of the bunker!

When I complained to our Pro about the high rough and some of the bunkers being hard pan. He reminded me that the reason why they're there is to create a penalty for not hitting the fairway.

Our bunkers at my home course need significant work.  They're placed fine and they play fine when they're wet.  But dry, it's like talcum powder.  They need to use a different grade of sand in the bunkers that's not so loose IMO.  Lots of time spent when a guy glides a wedge right through it and the ball doesn't move.

I know that a bunker is supposed to be a half stroke penalty but for whom and compared to what? A comparable distance from the hole? In what type of lie a comparable distance from the hole?

The idea of not tending to bunkers seems wise but is patently unfair for competition. The course conditions will be radically altered.

PGA/USGA tournament setup class sets them 5' outside a bunker - handle parallel to fairway pointing in direction of green. Muni's do whatever.

Anyone else watching the Valero Open catch the brief rake placement exchange between Ian Baker Finch and Peter Kostis? They both expressed a preference for rake placement inside bunkers. Specifically, they don't like the idea of a rake placed outside causing a ball to end up inside the bunker.

I heard them talking about that. It makes sense what they said, but getting everyone to do it correctly would be impossible. I could see someone leaving a rake right on the edge of the bunker so instead of the ball rolling to the middle of the bunker you end up right under the lip.

On a side note did anyone see the horrific lie that Trey M had on that bunker. That was a fried egg + for that one.

My home course leaves them in so I leave them in. Not sure that I have personally played a course any different. Not sure if it matters for me to be honest unless they were strategically placed outside not allowing my ball in the bunker.
