"Non-golf" Golf shoes

I realize that this question/topic may completely go against golf purist protocol and I could very well have an angry mob looking to hang me at sunset.. but conformity was never one of my stronger qualities so here goes.. 

 

Does anybody use any other shoes for golfing rather than "golf designated" shoes? A few years ago I bought a pair of Adidas Adicross V spikeless shoes. Up until then it was always the normal soft-spikes. When I started using them I was absolutely blown away with the comfort, stability, and versatility and swore to never go back to regular golf shoes. They were so comfy and good looking that I also wore them as everyday shoes from time to time.. Still have them and wear them on occasion.  

 

Well after breaking down the physical functionalities of the shoe, I realized that they really are just running/tennis shoes with an aggressive turf-stable sole and good foot support. Since then, I've ventured further down that rabbit hole and have stumbled onto "trail running" shoes. There are even just regular running shoes with some very turf-stable patterns that I truly feel are just as supportive as spikeless or regular golf shoes but far more comfortable. If you're into walking, I'd HIGHLY suggest giving a shoe like this a go.. They'll save your feet. 

 

Anyway, here are some that I've found to be fantastic and because of the low prices ($40-$50), I can buy 3-4 pair and rotate them for the price of 1 pair of actual golf shoes. 

 

These are what I mainly wear. The soles are a little softer but with gum rubber and the pegged pattern, I've had absolutely 0 slippage in various conditions. They are extremely breathable and will soak through if wet but I play year round in AZ and we rarely have water issues.

These are regular running shoes but the soles are almost a mix of plastic and rubber and have a very grippy pattern. Very firm and fantastic grip. Breathable and mostly weatherproof. These are my alternatives when I'm not wearing the above shoes.

These are excellent for colder/wetter weather as they are waterproof. I have the blue pair. Not the most breathable but super comfortable.

These are on their way. I love my NB's so much that I figured why not get another pair. These ave an even more aggressive Pegged pattern so I don't think I can go wrong (Yes I shop frequently at Khols).

I wore under amour running shoes from their outlet store for one year. I bought two pairs and they were fantastic. The one thing I have to say is with all shoes I buy and that's street shoes Golf shoes cowboy boots whatever. I always replace the footbeds with very good footbeds with good arch support. Just seems to make a great difference

When I was in Mexico a about three years ago, I did not want to try to pack golf shoes, so I packed some New Balance trail-type running shoes with the same thinking you have - the soles looked like they would provide the best grip compared to my other options. Traction was perfect, but one thing I did notice was they lacked lateral stability and tended to roll under my foot a bit during an aggressive rotation. It wasn't terrible (and maybe even helped me control my swing some), but certainly noticeable. I've been playing in Puma soft spikes (on my second pair) for a few years and I love the lateral stability of them.

I would say the only thing that would concern me with the “other types of shoes” is what they do to the green. If it is noticed that the shoes you have on are leaving some nasty spots on the greens it's probably not a good shoe for Golf, but other than that find comfort and wear them.

As far as I'm concerned (which I'm not concerned) they look just like a lot of Golf specific shoes on the market these days. I say if that's your style go for it. Willing to bet you could shoot even par or 20 over wearing them.

When I was younger I often wore sneakers. As you've identified, golf shoes have gotten much more comfortable and living in Florida I often play in wet conditions so I wear sneaker style soft spikes.

 

My son never wears golf shoes and prefers to play barefoot.

 

I say go for it.

I personally have tried sneakers and spikeless. I just do not feel comfortable on the course not in spikes. But I'm one of the few that wants metal spikes back. Some of the marks left by soft spikes are bad.

I play barefoot in Puerto Rico sometimes, flip flops in San Diego. Obviously not all the time, but when you want to relax and have a few and not against dress code wear whatever you like as long as it doesn't tear up the course!

I play in "street shoes", flip flops or Tumi sandals on occasion.  The main thing is to get flat shoes, not running shoes which have a padded heel and push weight forward over the toes.  

 

Playing and hitting balls barefoot is a great drill.  It activates the proprioceptors.

I used to wear “trail” shoes as well. Knobs on the bottom are pretty much the same as “spikeless” golf shoes!

Count me in for the metal spikes. They made you pick your feet up when you walk. Some of the early morning foot draggers we have scuff the greens up something awful.

These are my daily runners. Too bad the golf community and the minimalist community couldn't get together.. I've practiced in these. Definitely a different kind of golf.

I would buy a golf shoe with a really thin sole, waterproof and a good golf tread pattern.  I have a few pairs of the Merrell minimalistic shoes, they are very comfortable and light.

In the summertime I wear FJ golf sandals (plastic spikes). Very comfortable. However if I'm playing club tournament I'll wear regular golf shoes since they have more support.

Yeah I've seen these. These are clearly knockoffs of the Merrells. I would personally stear clear. 3.5 stars from 300+ reviewers is pretty poor. While the Merrells have nearly 5 stars from over 1000 reviewers. That said, I absolutely love these! Just a word to the wise, if you're just getting into the minimalist shoe scene, I'd recommend something with a little more padding to start out. If your feet are not properly conditioned, they will be sending you hate mail for a while. These are literally like wearing socks with a strip of rubber on the bottom. To others reading this, in the minimalist shoe world, this is fantastic and these are about as good as it gets. Its a hippie thing..

 

You asked about not falling over in these.. The whole purpose behind the minimalist shoe revolution is to wear shoes that allow you to really feel the ground, therefore helping to stabilise your movement and walk closer to the way we we're all meant to walk. That's assuming that people even buy into this hippie stuff.. Which I do. How close can a shoe be to our natural bare feet? These are them.

Took a few swings with my mid top hiking boots, lots of stability. Probably getting some mid golf shoes.
