I've read it lots of times. It's one of my favorite books.

Oh you mean the LA Open. :) Great course, nice field.

I think the greens are really difficult to read, so there is t a lot of birdies made, and with the kill, kill ya rough you have find the fairway or it's a crap shoot as to what happens with the next shot. Also the rough around the greens is tough to get up and down from.

Although his most notable designs are on the West Coast, from 1910-1915 George C. Thomas, Jr. studied under the Philadelphia think tank that included Hugh Wilson (Merion), George Crump (Pine Valley) & A.W. Tillinghast (Winged Foot); course architects who all encouraged high-risk/high-reward layouts.

A few interesting facts about George:

Designed and sold his first golf course as a teenager

2 courses in Golf Digest's Top 100

Probably best known for breeding roses

Thomas also designed the Stanford University Golf Course, yet another reason it's so perplexing that Tiger has seldom included “The Riv” in his tournament schedule.

At several points in the round Riviera demands big time shots with long clubs. Just thinking about #18 makes my hands start to sweat. If you look back at the list of champions over the past 25 years, there are a bunch of guys comfortable working it both ways off the tee (Bubba, Phil, Weir, Pavin - all multiple winners).

Kind of a shame that second round play can't be completed because of darkness when the weather is beautiful.

Why would the PGA allow 144 players to tee it up at the Genesis knowing that the first two rounds will not finish because of darkness?  The field should have been limited to the number of players that could possibly play a 5 hour round, because that's what it took.  The second round started late because they didn't finish the first round, and they didn't finish the second round, so 15 players have to show up at 7:15am on Saturday to finish their second round. And they had perfect weather!!  Imagine what it would have been like if it was wet and windy.  A few players have a chance to make the cut, but would you show up to play a hole or two with no chance of making the cut?

We don’t stop playing the game because we get old; we get old because we stop playing the game.”

Yeah I can imagine the conversation now: Good news You made it to Saturday, bad news it's because you can't finish Friday.

I think the other problem is slow play we certainly saw that on Sunday where Potter and DJ had to wait about 15 min to tee off towards the end. USGA/PGA need to do something about that.

I hate to sound like an old guy but I can't believe how far the modern players hit it.

In the days of persimmon 18 was driver, long iron for most of the field. Reaching 17 in two was out of the question.

I do see where people get bent out of shape about the distance that the ball is going.

And yet the course is holding up fine scoring wise.
