pulledabill
Since its wet and starting to snow, my mind is wandering a bit and I got thinking a bit about the turf I tear up especially during the wet season. I do come a bit over the top but get things back in order when Im playing well. I attack the ball pretty hard. During the wet season, being a digger costs me a stroke or two especially with half wedges on wet turf. Wish I couod figure out how to be a picker but its tough to teach me a new trick. Are you a picker or a digger? Have you always been that or were you able to change it up? Now that my wrists are not as strong I've had to learn to come through the ball different. But sometimes when it's wet I can still get a trophy pelt. Kenny B
Our turf here on the dry side of the Cascades is typically pretty firm. However, some holes on my course have some very deep divots; it's a muni and many players don't repair. It's impossible for me to dig. If I took as much turf as I see laying around, I would be in the hospital with broken wrists. When I play on the wet side, I will take a divot but not deep. It can cost me yardage if I hit it slightly fat. I can hit it fat at home with almost no loss of yardage. “We don’t stop playing the game because we get old; we get old because we stop playing the game.”

Kor.A.Door
Being a digger isn't the issue. If you make ball first contact digging won't be a problem. I have hit shots that I thought were really fat, but they flew the roght distance, which means that I hit the ball first then the ground. Draw a line and place the ball on the line. Your divot should be in front of the line. If it is, digging after contact won't have much affect on ball flight. Assuming that you don't stop the swing. kardboard.kid
I played a course last year where I was about 75yds from the pin. Used my trusty Gap wedge and took a pelt out of the fairway at least 14"long. It landed on my head to boot. Ball landed on the green about 20'from the hole. We all had a great laugh on that one. bluesmandan76
I used to go down after it pretty hard, but a couple years ago I switched to a shallower attack ala wild bill melhorn. Now I'm working my way back to a little more go-down-after-it but trying not to over do it. Hard to find a sweet middle spot. I do think shallow helps on thin lies or muddy wet conditions. But i think over all my gir went down a little with shallow... HardcoreLooper
Big time digger most of the time when I'm hitting it well. When it's wet, I take some serious scalps. MGB is right - hit the little ball first. But as I get older, I've learned how to completely lose my posture and hit screaming head-high skulls as well. I get away with it off the tee. Not so good with a wedge.
